Smoking around your Canine Friend

More than a quarter of pet owners who smoke would quit if they knew that secondhand smoke endanger their dog according to the April 2009 survey reported in Tobacco Control. The American Animal Hospital Association notes that dogs react to smoke particles much like humans do, developing lung inflammation and breathing problems. It even increases a dogs’ chances of developing cancer too.

Long snouted dogs are at most risk of nasal cancer; presumably, because of the dogs long airway provides more surface area for exposure. Medium and short nosed breeds are more susceptible to lung cancer. Everyone knows it isn’t healthy to smoke in front or around children. Our beloved dogs deserve that same respect. Their lifespan is too short as it is. Why would you want to risk shortening it even that much more? Could you live with the guilt of knowing your secondhand smoke caused your dog irreversible harm?

  1. Well, duh!! They breathe the same air we do and suffer from most of the diseases we do too. Be kind to yourself, your dog and everyone else around you. QUIT!!

  2. People need to THINK! I agree--their lifespan is too short as it is. If you have to smoke--go outside. Protect the rest of your family.

Not only do the rest of the people and dogs in your house suffer secondhand smoke but they are also suffering FIRST hand smoke. The smoke at the end of the cig is NOT filtered! Hence, firsthand smoke.

  3. I hate it when I see my aunt smoke around her dog. He now has a cough. It is not fair that he has to suffer because of her selfishness.
