Dog Adoption Fees are a bigger Bargain than you think.

It takes no math expert to know that adopting a dog from a rescue shelter is by far cheaper than purchasing a purebred from a breeder. You can easily spend anywhere between $500 to $5000.00 purchasing a purebred dog from a breeder where as the initial cost to adopt a rescue dog runs from $75 to $250.00 on average.

Fees vary on the type of group and its location with other factors affecting the adoption fee being the age, general health, and breed of the dog. The more desirable the dog and younger the age, the higher the fees generally run but will still always be far less than purchasing the same dog from a breeder. Things the adoption fee covers that the cost one would spend purchasing a purebred from a breeder are basic veterinary care including examination and blood tests, vaccinations, treatment of any illnesses, spay or neuter surgery, flea and tick control, testing and treatment for heartworm, and microchip insertion. Some shelters even toss in extras like collar, leash, dog food, crate, and dental care items.

Part of your adoption fees also goes to help cover the cost of the rescue centers operation costs. When adopting a dog from a rescue or shelter you are not only getting a family pet, you are helping to benefit operations that are saving dogs. You are also benefiting from any care and training the dog you adopted received. When you compare all the benefits that come with adoption, it is definitely more valuable than just the money alone.

  1. That sure makes sense to me. I never would have thought of all of the hidden charges until they were on top of me. Thanks for the heads up.

  2. I never considered it like that. Maybe the shelters should pass along this info to persepective buyers. Broken down like this, it makes perfect sense.
