Dog Loving Parasites ~ Hookworm

Hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum) is a zoonotic parasite meaning they are transmittable to humans. According to the Companion Animal Parasite Counsel, the hookworm gets its name because of the anterior ends of both the male and female hookworm are bent giving them a fishing hook appearance.

Hookworm is a parasite worm that lives in the digestive system of a dog latching onto and sucking blood from the intestinal wall . Most of the human hookworms species in the U.S. remain in the skin causing inflammation.

The hookworm is transferred through larvae. Larvae, which live in the soil, penetrate the skin of animals or humans who walk across a hookworm contaminated area. Dogs also pick up hookworm by eating infected mammals or puppies from their mother through nursing.

The symptoms of hookworm include chronic weight loss and diarrhea in adult dogs and sometimes fatal blood loss especially in puppies. Other symptoms that may present are weakness, lethargy, pale gums, and tarry stools.

Hookworm is diagnosed through fecal exams. Hookworm can be prevented through regular de-worming of puppies, annual or twice yearly fecal exams, promptly cleaning up feces in the yard, and mostly monthly heart worm prevention also protects against hookworm.

Dog Loving Parasites ~ Heartworm

No dog is safe from the heart-worm disease anymore; it is now found in every state. The heart-worm disease is a mosquito borne disease and is easily preventable and treatment to day is safer than it ever has been.

The heart-worm is a parasite worm (Dirofilaria immitis) that lives in the lungs and the heart’s right chambers. Left untreated, these worms multiply and grow up to 12 inches in length, eventually leading to serious or fatal disease of the lungs, heart, liver, or kidneys.

Heart-worm is transferred trough the bite of a infected mosquito. There is no observable signs that your dog has been infected with heart-worm until the disease progresses. Then you will notice coughing, heavy breathing/panting, and exercise intolerance. It is diagnosed through Antigen blood test. If positive, it will be followed by X-rays, additional blood tests, and other diagnostics to assess the severity of the disease.

The American Heartworm Society (AHS) recommends year round heart worm prevention available in six-month injectable and in monthly oral or spot on formulations, some which prevent fleas as well as other types of worms. They also recommend annual antigen testing to check for heart-worm, especially if using an oral preventive or if you miss a dose.

Dog Loving Parasites ~The Common Round Worm

Roundworm (Toxocara canis) is the most common parasitic infection in dogs and people. Almost all dogs pick up roundworm at some point of their lives, and most commonly, when they are in puppyhood.

The roundworm is a parasitic worm that lives in the dog’s intestines, causing diarrhea in most cases, but sometimes intestinal obstruction or pneumonia. In humans, roundworms can cause serious, and sometimes blinding, eye disease.

A dog can pick up roundworm by eating contaminated substances such as feces, animals, eating things off contaminated grass, or through their mother’s milk during nursing.

You can tell if your dog is infected with round worms through observation of spaghetti-like worms in their feces or vomit, weight loss, diarrhea, poor hair coat, and potbelly. A veterinarian will diagnose roundworm through a fecal exam.

You can help prevent the infection of roundworm in your dog by making sure you do regular de-worming of puppies, monthly preventives, and removing feces of unknown dogs on property immediately.

Do you have a Labradoodle?

The Labradoodle was created by crossing a Labrador Retriever and a standard or miniature poodle. It was first bred in 1988 by Wally Conron in New Zealand to be used as guide dogs. The reasoning was that with the cross breed, the Labradoodle would have the qualities of gentleness, easy to train, and a low shedder making it a perfect dog for those individuals allergic to fur or dander. Labradoodles are now widely used around the world as guide, assistance, and therapy dogs as well as being popular family dogs.

Labradoodles' hair can be anywhere from wiry to soft, and may be straight, wavy, or curly. Many Labradoodles do shed, although for those dogs that have inherited poodle coat characteristics, the coat usually sheds less and has less dog odor than that of a Labrador Retriever. Labradoodles are generally friendly, energetic and good with families and children as well as very intelligent and quite trainable. Labradoodles often display an attraction for water and strong swimming ability.

Labradoodles come in four sizes - Micro Mini's 9-17 lbs. (Under 15 inches); Mini 18-25 lbs (15-18 inches); Medium 25-55 lbs. (19-23 inches); Maxi 60-100 lbs (24-30 inches). They have a long lifespan and can exceed 17 years with proper care.

Teaching your Dog to Sit

Teaching a dog to sit is as easy as just a few steps. Follow these steps and you will have your dog sitting on command in no time at all!

Get your dog’s attention with a tasty treat you know he/she loves!

Lure your dog into a sitting position by lifting the treat above his/her nose and toward the back of its head. The higher her/his nose goes the more its rear will lower. When it touches the ground, solidify that moment in your dog’s mind by using a clicker or saying “yes” and then reward with the treat.

If your dog rises on its hind legs instead of sitting, try again keeping the treat lower and moving slower.

After several lured “sits”, start again without a treat. Most dogs will follow the hand motion and sit. If he/she doesn’t, go back to luring with a treat again a few more times. Add cue the cue word “sit” just before you make the hand motion and your dog will learn that both the word and the hand motion are its cue to sit.

Help a Dog Shelter or Rescue

Even if you are short on money, there are ways you can help dog shelters and rescues without emptying your pocket book and only requiring a little effort or time on your part. Here are some great ideas in ways you can help dog shelters and rescues:
  • If you have any internet/website skills, you can help a shelter keep their website up to date.
  • Help by offering your services to transport dogs to appointments, alternate shelters, rescue sites, foster homes, or adopted homes.
  • Volunteer your time to take dogs out on walks, train, and or socialize them.
  • Organize fundraisers or help with them to get much-needed funds to keep shelter(s) running smoothly.
  • If you are a groomer, trainer, veterinarian, lawyer, salesperson, etc that can find a nitch in ways of helping a dog shelter or rescue, donate your expertise to make a big difference.
This is just a few examples of how you can help. Contact your local shelter or rescue group for more information on how you can get involved.

Taming the Doggie Drag Hinny

Not only can it be a bit embarrassing when your dog drags it hinny across the carpet or lawn, it can also be a sign your dog is sick or with disease especially if accompanied with vomiting, pain, fever, lethargy, blood in stool, or diarrhea. More commonly, a dog dragging its hinny across the ground is a sign that your dog ate something he/she shouldn’t have and its body is working in overtime to flush it out.

This of course irritates your dog’s bootie and your dog finds relief by dragging it across the ground. It is similar to a person scratching their back on a corner of a wall to relieve an itch.

If your dog is dragging its bootie and has other symptoms other than just diarrhea, by all means seek a vets opinion to make sure it is nothing serious, as well if diarrhea last more than two days. If your dog is just p[resenting with diarrhea there are many canine friendly remedies that can help calm the runs. Other cause of a dog feeling the need to drag their hinny is worms so make sure that your dog is current on worming treatments.

Fitness Boot Camp for you and your Dog

After a long winter of not much exercise, it is no surprise when both dog and dog owner puts on a few extra pounds. If you were already fighting the battle of weight prior to winter, now summertime, it can be a bit disparaging when considering different options on how to lose weight.

Well if you are a dog owner and wanting to get yourself and your dog into great shape, there has always been both human and canine fitness programs, however I came across this program that combines the two. Located in Los Angeles, the Thank Dog Boot Camp, an outdoor fitness program that combines dog obedience, weight training, cardiovascular exercise, and nutritional guidelines for dogs and owners was created.

President and co-founder Jill Bowers developed the program to help owners and dogs get healthy together. The human/canine boot camp is staffed by a certified fitness trainer and two dog obedience trainers. The professionals work with both you and your dog to reach your individual goals. So if your goal is to drop 20 pounds or more, and your goal for your dog is to learn to sit, stay, obey, etc. the Thank Dog Boot Camp will help you reach your goals.

From the Thank Dog Boot Camp website:
“This is not a cutesy workout. We don't just add your dog to run around with, nor do we do agility. We're the most organized, SAFE yet challenging dog/owner program out there today. This is a boot camp! Dogs are always in a command (that we teach at the consultation) and the owner is ALWAYS moving. If you want to lose weight and/or tone up and have a dog (trained or untrained, fat or skinny) or want to borrow one- join us! We have ALL fitness levels and body sizes. EVERYONE FITS IN!”

Check them out if you are in the Los Angeles area and looking to do a little trimming, toning for you or your dog or extra training for your dog.

Do you have an Afghan Hound?

The Afghan Hound originated in Afghanistan and the surrounding regions. The Afghan Hound was used to chase game, including deer and rabbit due to their exceptional vision and considerable speed and agility. The Afghan Hound average life span is 10 to 15 years. Their silky flowing locks were developed to protect it from harsh element. It grows long, thick and extremely fine all over the dog with the exception of the Afgan’s face and the top of the tail where you will see the extreme opposite where the hair is very short and smooth.

Afghan Hounds’ stand approximately 24 to 28 inches and weigh approximately 50 to 60 pounds. The Afghan Hound is a large dog but not bulky. This breed is intelligent and a very gentle companion with an independent spirit. Because of the Afghan Hound innate prey drive, they should not be trusted off a leash. If they get lose on a run after prey, you may as well kiss it goodbye until it either catches the prey or tires out. They are just that fast and driven.

7 Things to Watch for at Dog Parks

Dog parks are a great way to allow your dog to get exercise and interact with other dogs however; there are some things you need to be cautious of for the best interest of your beloved dog.

Water: Some dog parks have on-site water bowls for your pet, but not all. Checks first to see if they are available and if not, by all means, bring your own drinking vessel for your dog. If the park does have on-site watering bowls, before allowing your dog to drink from them, make sure they are clean. Drain them and refill with fresh water if they are dirty.

Cleanliness: Some dog parks are not well maintained, both by the park officials and/or by the dog owners who utilize the area. When dog owners fail to pick up their dog’s feces, your dog can be at risk of getting illnesses such as Giardia, parvovirus, and coccidiosis. If the dog park you frequent is a concrete or blacktop base, make sure there are hoses available to wash away your dog’s urine and traces of feces.

Park Drainage: With concrete dog parks, make sure there is somewhat of a slope so when people are rinsing their dogs urine and feces traces away, it drains off the concrete. If this is not the case and you see standing water, that dog park is a breeding ground for bacteria. Steer clear of all puddles and even more so if your dog is a puddle drinker.

Standing Water/Pond: Heavy rain can leave behind standing water for weeks, and even standing water from rainfalls can be the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, bugs, and algae. With ponds and standing water, if you see blue green algae, steer your dog clear. Algae can be toxic to your dog. Keep away or avoid the park when algae is present.

Attentive Dog Owners: Some owners are oblivious to their dog’s actions. To keep your dog safe, pay attention to your dog the entire time you are in the dog park.

Aggression: If you see a dog going after a more submissive dog, you can about bet trouble will ensue. You can’t control who uses the dog park, little lone the types of dogs that will frequent, however, if your dog is timid you should avoid late day trips when other dogs are full of energy after being cooped up all day. If you have an aggressive dog that does not play well with other, either find a more secluded dog park or area to run your dog or keep your dog under close restraint while around other dogs.

Doggie Hardware: Keep an eye on the dogs around you. If you see dogs wearing a chain or prong collar, these are the types of dog collars that do not belong in a dog park. During play, others may get their jaw caught and lose a tooth or even choke to death.

Bye Bye Fleas

Fleas can hop onto your dog anytime of the year, but spring and summer time, fleas are on double duty! Traditional remedies include anti-flea powder, shampoos, sprays, and spot-on treatments. However, there are some natural preventives and deterrents you can also use.

Cedar oil repels bugs thus the reason many dog beds are filled with cedar chips. Lavender, Citronella, and Rose oils are said to repel fleas as well. A few drops of the oil can be put on your dog’s collar, but be cautious about putting them directly on your dog. If you do, mix the oil wit water first and spray it on your dog. Do not leave on for more than an hour and shampoo thoroughly at that time.

For the yard, try a beneficial nematode that eats flea eggs. The nematode is a small worm that tracks down flea eggs that lay amongst moist grass blades. You can also spread your yard with a thin layer of Diatomaceous dirt (made from fossils of water plants). This compound is harsh on fleas, leading them to dehydration to death. You can get both the nematode and the Diatomaceous dirt from a garden center.

Dog Massage

Just like you enjoy a great massage, so does your dog. Studies have shown that dog massage does help effectively with dog’s soreness and muscle stiffness as well as helps keep the stress level of your dog at a minimum. There are five different types of massage that are making a strong break into dog care – Swedish, Acupressure, Sport, Myofascial, and Craniosacral. Each has a specific purpose.

Swedish Massage is used to manipulate the body’s soft tissues to achieve drainage, relaxation, and stimulation. It enhances the circulatory, musculoskeletal, and nervous system functioning.

Acupressure Massage is used to help deal with arthritis, fatigue, poor digestion and more through applying pressure to key points along a dogs particular energy lines called meridians.

Sport Massage is used to deal with top muscular fitness and is popular in dogs who compete. Myofascial Massage releases tightness within the fascia tissues found between muscle group layers and around the skeletal structures. Craniosacral Massage deals with trauma to the spine such as whiplash.

Regular massage can help your dog live a longer, healthier, and happier life. Next time you are getting a massage, think about scheduling your dog with a canine massage.

Don’t Dump Your Dog

The most upsetting thing other than purposely-arranged dog fighting is people who get a dog and than just later dump it when they no longer want it. This is tragic and just unacceptable. It is understandable there are some situations in life that ties a dog owners hands to where they have to find a new home for their pet. In those cases, that is understandable, as long as that is what is actually done – locating a proper and loving placement for the dog.

There are times when people have to move from their current living arrangements. It could be due to a job relocation or just no longer being able to afford the rent/mortgage. In these cases, when a dog owner is faced with a need to move, an excuse of a new location not allowing pets is not an acceptable reason to dump a dog. You always have the option to find housing that accepts pets, and what should have been looked for initially anyhow. Sometimes you can talk landlords who are not willing to accept pets to do so with a extra safety deposit should the pet cause any damage on the property. If you have no other choice but to move immediately and there are no pet friendly housing available, then talk to friends and family and try to see if you can find someone to care for your dog until you can find suitable housing or check into extended boarding.

Another common reason people dump dogs is due to the dog’s behavior. They will say it was out of control and they could no longer deal with it. There simply are no bad dogs, only bad dog owners. If your dog has a behavior problem, it is due to the way it was trained. This is the dog owner’s responsibility. If your dog’s behavior is out of control, hire a dog behaviorist or learn about dog training and retrain your dog. Talk to other dog owners. The behaviors your dog is displaying that are displeasing may be as simple as teaching it a couple commands to correct.

Health issues of a dog is another reason many dogs are dumped along the roadside. Some will use the excuse that they couldn’t stand to watch their pet die so instead, dumped the dog rather than not get the dog appropriate care. Some use the excuse that they cannot afford the health care expense. If your dog develops a chronic health condition, it is your responsibility to your pet to help manage it. If money is tight, talk to your vet. Many times, they can provide samples or give you other alternatives.

Another biggy is when people use the excuse that they are having a baby so they will no longer have time for their dog. It is very easy to fit a dog into a family routine, even a baby’s. When taking your dog out for a walk, you can easily bring your baby along in a stroller. Dogs and kids are a great combo if handled properly. Take your time when introducing the dog to the new addition to the family. Growing up with dogs is one of the best gifts you can give a child, if done right.

The excuse of no longer being able to afford your dog is not a good excuse to dump a dog. The expense of a dog should be considered before even taking on dog ownership. However, if this was overlooked and one finds themselves in a position where money is tight you can lower your long term dog expenses by keeping your dog healthy. Use low cost veterinary clinics for routine vaccinations. Resist the urge to buy extras such as a new collar, dog bed, or bag of treats. Make your own dog bed or ask a friend for help. You can also offer your dog carrots or apples as snacks, or make homemade treats. But do not stop giving your dog its heart worm and flea prevention treatments and do not feed your dog food that is less than acceptable for its health.

When you have a serious health condition that makes it hard or next to impossible to care for your pet you may have to turn your dog over to someone who can. Dumping again is never acceptable. Maybe there is a friend or a family member that can help you. When ill, having your loyal dog by your side can be very beneficial and comforting. Check with your local vets and see if there is any outreach programs where volunteers come and help care for the pets of an ailing person. If you are the caregiver of a dog owner who must enter a nursing home or similar facility, consider keeping the dog yourself or placing the dog with friends or family.

If you have exhausted all of your options and just cannot keep your dog it is your responsibility to find your dog the best home possible where it will receive the love and attention it deserves. Be sure that you have explored all avenues. Millions of dogs are euthanize each year because of overcrowding in shelters, so try not to contribute to that number. Abandonment is NEVER acceptable.

Advertise in a newspaper or online and interview possible new homes as they respond. Write up a brief fact sheet about your dog covering details like age, breed, size, color, health, temperament, and personality. Be honest about your dog especially regarding its behavior. Inform all of your friends, family, neighbors, and your veterinarian and staff of your need to locate a new home for your dog. If even thorough those means you cannot not find a suitable home, contact animal rescue groups and “no-kill” animal shelters in your area. If your dog is purebred or mixed with a specific, obvious breed, try a breed-specific rescue group.

Pet Sitters or Boarding

There may come a time when you need to leave your beloved dog behind. It could be you have to travel where having your dog along would not be conducive to the agenda at hand. If you don’t have family or a friend willing to tend to your dog’s needs while you are away you may have to consider a pet sitter or a dog boarding kennel. Boarding or getting a pet sitter varies in price. I personally know of a dog sitter in Chicago who is getting $100.00 a day. Depending on the length of your absence, this can get quite expensive. Many opt for pet sitters because the dog can remain in its own environment and are willing to pay the extra cost due to this.

Generally, kennels are cheaper but there are a few things to keep in mind before just having your dog shack up in any ol’ kennel while you are away. Check the reputation of the kennel. Ask if there are people you can talk to who has used the kennels service in the past. Talk to friends and neighbors, dog clubs and have friends talk to friends about the various kennel options you have in your area. Do walk through and pay close attention to the over all health of the dogs currently being boarded. If you hear coughing, wheezing, or see signs of weeping eyes, it would not be wise to board your dog there. Kennels can be a breeding ground for dog-related illnesses and it is not worth risking your dog’s heath. Make sure it is clean and orderly and no visible signs of risks to your dog. Ask about interaction with other dogs. If they have free run time, even if it is supervised, there is still a risk that not all dogs will get along. Ask about the activity level your dog will receive while being boarded in their facility. Bottom line, ask - ask - and ask some more. If the kennel becomes annoyed by your questions, look for another kennel. After all, would you settle for just any old sitter if your dog was a child?

Loving your Dog

When you want your dog to really thrive and be the best that it can be, you have to nurture it no different than you would nurture a newborn baby into your home. Just as children thrive on structure and discipline, dogs do as well and training is paramount to your dog’s quality of life whether you do it on your own or enroll him/her in a training program.

When placing your dog in a training program, make sure you choose wisely and then follow through. A huge part of the success of any training program is the dog owner’s active involvement and ability to establish themselves as the dog’s master. Being the authority figure over your dog does not mean inflicting corporal punishment. It is wrong to do with children, and it is wrong to do with pets! Be sure to reinforce good behavior and humanely correct misbehavior. Consistency is key in achieving positive results.

Building and maintaining a strong bond with your dog is vital. Provide your dog ample one on one time. Petting your dog, playing with toys, talking to him, or taking him for rides in the car are some ways to strengthen and preserve this bond. Dog ownership should not be a chore, but it is a responsibility that needs to be taken seriously. Dog ownership can be an experience that will enrich your life and that of your dog.

A Dog’s Physical Maintenance

When you think of maintaining your physic you probably think about hitting a gym, running, or doing some sit ups. Daily showers, doing your hair and maybe even throwing some smelly on is also part of personal maintenance. When thinking about your dogs overall physical maintenance it really isn’t that much different. They too require exercise and upkeep. By keeping your dog healthy can prevent unnecessary visits to the vet.

You should establish a regular exercise routine that you do with your dog. By being a dog owner, one of the benefits is getting the extra exercise that is good for anyone’s health! Even if your exercise routine is just a walk around a few blocks with your dog, you are doing far more for your dog then just providing essential exercise. You are giving your dog a sense of belonging and making it happy by spending quality time with him or her.

Depending on your dog’s breed will determine just how much active exercise it requires. Some dogs require a high level of exercise so check with your vet to ensure you are providing your dog with adequate exercise.

Just as you have your daily grooming routine, make sure to incorporate one with your dog as well. It doesn’t need to be daily unless of course you have a high shedding dog, then brushing your dogs coat may be required daily. However, every dog requires basic grooming such as brushing, bathing, and nail trimming. Some even require haircuts. If you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself, don’t just forgo it, take your doge to a reputable groomer for its personal grooming needs.

Just as everyone should get an annual check up with his or her physician, you should take your dog to the vet at least bi yearly for a wellness check up.

Dog’s Proper Nutrition

A healthy, balanced diet is fundamental in your dog’s well being. Before purchasing just any old dog food, take a little time and research the companies that make them. Check to see what ingredients they use and the percentage of fillers they use. A high quality dog food has very little if any filler materials added to make the dog supplement. After doing your research, you may find you’re your dog may not like a particular brand, so make sure you have a few options. There is no sense buying a dog food your dog will not eat just based on quality alone. They have taste buds to you know and can be finicky! .

Your veterinarian can also give you a few suggestions and possibly samples to try out on your dog first! You will know when you found the right dog food for your dog. After a few weeks your dogs coat should become shiner and his/her overall health should appear more vibrant. If you see your dogs’ coat begins to dull, your dog becomes sluggish, or begins to pick at its food, you need to change diet again. Consult your veterinarian for nutritional advice, especially if you notice any changes in your pet’s health and always be sure your dog has access to plenty of fresh, clean water.

Your Aging Dog

Even though your dog may be considered a canine senior citizen, you wouldn't necessarily know it to look at him. It isn’t like they all begin to gray, or even slow down for that matter. Depending on the breed, dogs begin to experience what we refer to as the golden years anywhere from 5 to 9 years of age. Smaller breeds tend to live up to 14 years or more, whereas some of the larger breeds often don't live beyond 8 or 9 years and begin to slow noticeably around the age of 5.

When dogs begin to age, their metabolism begins to slow and your dog tends to store fat. You may want to check with your vet about changing their diet to a higher fiber, fat and calorie reduced senior dog food. Make sure that your senior dog’s exercise routine doesn’t slide. You may have to slow down your pace on your daily walks or shorten them, but don’t just stop them totally because your dog is aging. Stopping exercise is far worse for their health

To help your dog where arthritic joints are causing problems, spend a little time each morning with them gently massaging their joints. Softer bedding and vet-approved vitamins might also soothe creaky joints. Other things that you can do to help your senior dog enjoy its golden years just a little bit better are to provide them with steps if they have privilege to lie on the couch to make the transition easier than jumping up. Purchase elevated food dishes to help meet your dog rather than your dog having to meet the dishes to reduce neck pain.

Overweight Hunting Dogs

Even hunting dogs with their athletic nature can become overweight. Seasons, if they fall into a sedentary nature you can bet they will gain a few extra pounds that may make it tough for them to perform when the hunting season arrives again.

Did you know that it is estimated that 40% of dogs are overweight? The most common cause is that their calorie intake supersedes what they burn off in exercise a day. That excessive weight turns into fat over time and can cause medical problems in the future.

Hunting dogs fed a high calorie, protein dense food for athletic dogs are at particular risk for canine obesity, as their exercise level must be kept high in order to “use up” the calories that they are being fed. They must adhere to a strict exercise regimen, in order to prevent excessive weight gain.

Overweight dogs are at risk for a variety of health problems: severe joint, muscle and ligament problems, as well as respiratory and cardiac complications. Diabetes in dogs is also a threat. It is important to remember that just because your dog was bred for an athletic lifestyle, his energy level and fitness depend on you. Keep your dog fit, healthy and not overweight. Dogs can then be assured good health and hopefully a long life.

Teach your Dog to Lie Down

Teaching your dog to lie down on command isn’t as hard as many would like to think it is. Dogs will do just about anything for their owner for nothing more than wanting to please them. To begin teaching your dog how to lie down, show your sitting dog a treat then slowly lower it, allowing your dog to nibble as you lure it toward the floor.

About halfway there, most dogs will stand rather than lie down, but don’t be discouraged, as I said, this is typical. Start again, but before your dog stands up from the sitting position verbally signal “yes” and give your dog the treat. Lure your dog again with the treat in the same fashion as before but start slightly lower. Each time your dog responds to the height expressed per your direction, reward your dog. Each time, lure your dog closer and closer to the floor and reward only at the lowest point of each attempt.

Soon your dog will realize that it is easier to just lie down then crouch to get the treat. After you have accomplished to lure your dog down to a lying position several times then add the verbal clue to the scenario of stating “Lie Down” before lowering the treat. Move on with out using the treat and only providing an empty hand. You hand motion will become a silent cue as to what you want him/her to do should you not be able to verbalize it.

Do you have a Rottweiler?

The Rottweiler exact origins are not known, it is believed that the breed derived from the Mastiff and that its ancestors can be traced back to ancient Rome and later shown in the German town of Rottweil where it worked as a cattle dog and sometimes a police dog and where it got its name. The Rottweiler average life span is 10 to 15 years. Their black with tan, rust, or Mahogany marked coat can distinguish Rottweilers. Their coat is short, dense with a soft to medium texture, and low to high sheen.

Male Rottweiler weighs in at approximately 93 to 130 pounds and their female counterparts weigh in around 80 to 115 pounds. The Rottweiler is a large, muscular and rugged dog with a hard-working and confident demeanor. This breed is intelligent and very loyal to its family. It is a excellent working dog, watchdog or guard dog. The bad rep the Rottweilers have is really unfair because most Rot’s raised by responsible dog owners are really quite calm and affectionate.
