Dogs are pack animals – they are not content when excluded from the family unit. Though some circumstances may require dogs to live outside, most dogs will thrive in a primarily indoor environment. Your dog should have an area of the house dedicated as his own space, such as a kennel, crate or bed. This teaches your dog to have respect for his own space and, in turn, yours. Set down ground rules, enforce off-limit areas of the house, and welcome your dog into permissible areas.
If your dog spends time outdoors, provide access to a doggie door or a temperature-controlled doghouse. Never leave your dog unattended outside without shelter, especially during very hot or cold weather, as this can result in severe health consequences.

Your Loving Elderly Dog
As dogs age, they disposition can change. Some may desire to be near you 24/7. They may all of the sudden begin to follow you around more, beg for extra tummy rubs, lean against you, lounge next to you on the couch longer, and just be over all clingier than normal. When time is limited with your beloved dog, this can be a much appreciated time.
However, other dogs in their later time of life can become more solitary, spend more time napping, or just gazing out a window. Instead of greeting you when you enter a room, your dog may exit left seeking its alone comfort spot. This can sadden a dog owner during this time.
Any change of behavior out of the norm for your dog warrants a visit to the vet to rule out any physical reason behind the change. However, both of the scenarios explained previously are pretty common for a senior dog. If your senior dog begins to require more attention, give him or her the extra love they are craving and should he/she prefer more alone time, don’t take it personal. You can encourage interaction with your dog, just don’t force it and give them the space they need.

When Adopting a Dog, Read the Contract
Signing a contract when adopting a dog is no different than signing any other contract. Know what you are signing before putting your Jon Hancock on it. You may find there are some things in the contract you may not be willing or care to agree to.
Most adoption groups and shelters have a contract one signs when adopting a dog. They are drawn up to protect both the dog and the new dog owner. Contracts typically require you to:
- Care for the dog in a humane manner
- Have the dog spay or neutered
- Return dog to shelter if you can no longer care for it
- Stipulate that you cannot sell, give away, or adopt the dog out to another person or group
- Agree to follow up contact from the shelter or group via phone or home visits to check on the welfare of the dog through out the dog’s life
A strong motivating factor behind such rigid adoption contracts is to deter scam’er from adopting dogs for ill use such as dog fighting. For the typical family looking to adopt a dag, although some contracts may feel a bit restrictive, it is in the groups and shelters best interest of the dog behind the regulations. So make sure you read the contract first and are comfortable with how it reads before signing.

When Your Dog Bites
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1,000 people go to the emergency room a day due to dog bites. Every breed of dog may bite under the right situation and if your dog does, you should be aware of your legal responsibilities.
Many states including Illinois, California, and Florida have strict liability laws to where you are held legally liable for injuries caused by your dog regardless of a spotless history of aggression. Texas, Vermont, New Mexico, and Alaska hold you responsible for injuries caused by your dog’s first bite only if you had prior knowledge of your dog’s aggressive tendencies towards people or if the injury occurred due to negligent conduct by you or an ordinance violation such as ignoring a leash law.
If your dog should bite someone, be kind to the injured party and if a claim is made, check with your insurance company to see what coverage you have for such situation.

Should Kids Walk Dogs?
Sending your child to walk the family dog may seem like just another everyday things. You may feel that it is a great way to burn off some energy in both your child and dog while providing great exercise. However, not all children are ready for this type of responsibility. There is no “right” age to when it is okay for your child to take on the responsibility of walking the dog but there are some factors you can take into consideration before sending your child and dog out on the streets.
Consider the neighborhood you live in. Is it a quiet neighborhood or a heavily traffic area. If it has heavy traffic there are the dangers of accidents and stranger danger. If your child is not stranger danger savvy, no matter what type of neighborhood you live in, it is best you walk with your child while walking the dog.
Some other things to consider are:
- Are there adequate sidewalks in your neighborhood and will your child and dog have to cross any busy roads in their walk?
- Does your child know how to properly clean up after your dog?
- Does your child have the strength to steer the dog away from neighbors gardens and yards?
- Does your child have the strength to control your dog should it bolt after another dog or animal?
- Is your dog well trained and obey commands from your child consistently?

Cloned SAR Dogs
9/11 is hard to forget, the losses and the heroes, the devastation, and the re-building of American unity. But how many recall the German Shepherd that recovered the last survivor of the attack? Trakr, the heroic German Shepherd’s owner James Symington entered a writing essay contest regarding why his dog should be cloned and won. BioArts International sponsored the essay-writing contest. BioArts sent Trakr’s DNA to Sooam Biotech Research Foundation in Seoul, South Korea.
Trakr passed away in April of 2009 and two months later Symington was presented with five cloned pups of Trakr - Trustt, Solace, Valor, Prodigy and Deja-Vu. This summer will begin the long and rigorous training that Symington will undergo with Trakr’s offspring’s to also become Search and Rescue dogs. Training consists of 600 hours of intense training to create privately funded search and rescue team. Symington is hoping that the efforts will make it possible for him to deploy the team internationally by the end of the year to locate people trapped or lost after natural and manmade disasters. With the exact traits as Trakr, it will be interesting to follow these pups in their soon to be career.

Geriatric Problems in Dogs
As your dog ages you will see signs of just that. It can be its eyesight or hearing becoming poor or it no longer has the spunk it once had before. He or she will begin to tire quicker and breathing may become more labored. These are things your vet can do nothing to help stop. It is all in Mother Nature’s way. But not all changes in your dog’s health that come about with age are necessarily age related but rather a illness. Several age-related illnesses can be treated, if caught in time. There are five age related illness vets suggest you keep an eye out for – Liver, Kidney, and Heart disease, Diabetes, and Cancer.
A yearly series of "geriatric screening" tests — including liver, kidney, protein and blood sugar checks — beginning when your dog is 6 years old, will help your vet catch any problems before they become unmanageable.
Although most types of heart disease can't be prevented, they can often be controlled with drugs, diet, nutritional supplement and exercise. Symptoms to watch for include excessive panting, coughing, and fainting.
Diabetes can also be controlled with drugs, diet and exercise. Symptoms of diabetes include diminished eyesight and a change in eye appearance and color.
Kidney Failure presents with loss of appetite, depression, and increased volume and frequency of urination and voiding. Results from blood and urine tests, sometimes X-rays or an ultrasound test, and possibly a biopsy or exploratory surgery can help your vet determine the treatment plan.
If your dog is suffering from liver disease, the whites of his eyes may be yellow, his urine may be darker, and he will be weak and lethargic. He may also eat less and drink more. To diagnose liver problems, your vet will need to do a complete medical work-up.
Unusual lumps can be cancer. Biopsies from lumps and tumors will determine whether they are malignant. Some lumps can naturally present just do to age. If it is cancer, your vet will most likely remove the lump and/or local lymph nodes, or may start a course of radiation, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy.
Arthritis and other joint inflammations may be a normal part of growing old, but the pain and soreness can be controlled with vet-prescribed medication. Do not self medicate your dog. Just because aspirins work for you, for a dog they can cause irritation in your dog's stomach and lead to ulcers in the intestines or kidney disease.

How to Avoid Your Dog Becoming Aggressive With Kids
Puppies are naturally playful. They like to jump and run around crazy, just like kids. Kids can be excited by a puppy’s active personality and many will want to join in on the fun, where some may be intimidated by it. However, inappropriate interacting with a puppy while it is playing can lead your puppy to be aggressive with your child.
If your dog is very playful or likes jumping around, do not let your children push or shove him, playfully or otherwise - Dogs will naturally fight for dominance and push back. As the play continues, the pushing back will increase as the puppy fights for dominance.
If your dog is excited and jumping around, you must find a way to settle the dog immediately, and ensure the children understand not to encourage or excite the dog. If the dog hears yelling or even giggling uncontrollably, they can interpret this noise as encouragement.
Make sure to teach your children to never touch or grabbing a dog's tail or paws - The reason for this is simple. Your dog cannot see what is behind him, so he will act defensively and instinctively to someone sneaking up behind him. If your child grabs your dog's tail, you may find your dog doing something completely out of character such as biting or attacking the child. The main point of this rule is general respect and understanding that like humans, your dog can easily be startled.
Teach children that tug of war and similar games are inappropriate - These games are focus on dominance and are a strength competition.
Because children get excited when playing with their dog, they will often overlook when a dog is becoming aggressive, not only creating an extremely dangerous environment, but also generally encouraging aggressive behavior in everyday life.
Never teach your dog attack commands. If you adopted your dog from a shelter, you might just find out when using an attack command that they were taught it in their previous placement which can lead to serious issues for you. There is no need ever to teach a dog to attack unless it is being used for law enforcement issues. A dog will naturally protect its owner and family if there is danger. There is no need for attack commands ever with a family pet.

Dog Harness versus Dog Collar
When you need to be able to control your active dog calmly, use a dog harness rather than a collar on your pet. A dog harness is readily accepted by dogs and easily used by owners. Many dog trainers and animal behaviorists recommend dog harnesses for the more active dogs for its ease of use and humane design.
Unlike a collar, a dog harness distributes force evenly throughout the dog’s body. You can pull on the harness and the dog will feel his entire center of gravity being moved as opposed to yanking the dog’s head/neck. This is a gentler, more sensible and a far more effective way of applying force to an animal, when force is called for. By pulling on a dog’s center of gravity, he will not have much choice than move along with it. Check out some of the great dog harnesses available through Doggie Corral.

When it is okay for your Dog to show aggressive Behavior.
There are times it is okay for your dog to be aggressive. You do not want your dog to be so submissive that it begins to display just as many if not more disobedient behaviors.
No one wants to play with a dog that has absolutely no aggressive nature. It would be boring. Aggression is not just reaching out and biting the person or animal next to them because they want to exert dominance. Aggression is a personality trait. Aggression can present as a go-getter attitude. Think of an employer looking at possible new hires. Do you think they want an aggressive personality or a submissive one? If you chose aggressive, you are right. They want someone who isn’t afraid of tackling the task at hand.
Just as a employer doesn’t want to hire a non-aggressive employee, a dog owner doesn’t want a dog who has no aggressive personality at all. When you throw a ball for your dog to fetch, you want it to go fetch it, not lay down. A submissive dog may lie down and not bother to get up unless you yell at it to do so. That is a form of disobedience. However, with an aggressive dog, although it is great that they are a go-getter, you still want to make sure you keep the aggression level in check.
Aggressive behavior can tell you when something is wrong with your dog medically. Your dog may snip at you when it is hurting or not feeling well when normally it wouldn’t. Immediately you will know something is out of the norm for your dog and seek out the problem.
When dogs get aggressive with other dogs it is your responsibility as the dog owner to take control of the situation. Other dogs can make your dog feel uncomfortable or threatened. This can result in them acting out aggressively by growling, barking, or even attacking the dog. Take control (or have the other dog owner take control) of the situation, removing the other dog's behavior. Remember, not all dog owners are responsible. Give your dog space to calm down and let him/her know that there is no need for aggression. If the reaction was something totally out of your dog’s control, such as another dog attacking first and your dog reacting to the situation, disciplining him or her is unnecessary, however it is still important that you quickly end the situation or remove your dog from a situation that can result in such behavior.

Dog Aggression ~ Is it really all about the Breed?
Many dogs, due to their breed, get a bad rep of being aggressive. Even home insurance companies will demand that a person carry extra insurance if the homeowner has one of these breeds such as chows, pit bulls, Dobermans, and the list goes on. Some will not even insure a homeowner with such breeds. Some apartment/rental places will not allow a tenant to rent if they have one of the black listed breeds. It is dog discrimination at its worst. There is not a dog out there that doesn’t have the potential to become aggressive. Personally, I have met some of the gentlest pit bulls and chows amongst other blacklisted dogs while at the same time I have met some pretty darn mean little yipper snapping ankle biters!
Dog aggression boils down to the dog owner and the behavior development of the dog, not the breed. If you miss-treat your dog it will become aggressive, and if you use ineffective training methods this may also lead to aggression. The same goes with anything, if you abuse a dog there is a high probability it will become aggressive. Same way with people; so should homeowner insurers refuse to insure people who have had a history of abuse. Maybe so, but they don’t.
Bad dog owners is what has brought this discrimination about and it is sad because these same dogs, due to their bad rep sit in animal pounds due to their rap alone. What are your thoughts on this subject and how if at all, do you think this can be turned around.

Floyd the Dog
I came across a great Facebook Page that was promoting something all animal lovers, especially dog lovers, can appreciate. The Website is FloydTheDog.com and their goal is to save the lives of innocent animals and ease the suffering of other unfortunate animals. Here is more about this terrific club.
FloydTheDog.com is a FREE Animal Story Club on the Internet. It costs nothing, but just by joining Floyd’s Story Club at www.FloydTheDog.com you will be helping to save lives and ease the suffering of unfortunate animals. The Club is run for the benefit of Animal Charities. Authors of the stories choose which Charity will get a donation. The size of the donation depends on the number of Club Members.
New members are sent an animal short story when they join and a new story every month afterwards. There are no sad stories. The author of the story, usually the Competition Winner, gets to choose the Charity of the Month. Floyd sends a donation to that Charity. The size of the donation is directly linked to the number of Members in the Club. More Members mean a bigger Donation.
The Club is totally free. The site is safe, carries no advertising, and makes no appeals. Please visit www.FloydTheDog.com and join in.

Dog Collars
Dogs are a man’s best friend. We want to keep them close to us, protect them, especially when out in public amongst all the strange elements around your dog. We use dog collars to help us perform all these tasks. Aside from taking control, dog collars are also used as accessories or some use them as identification to aid in the case your dog should stray. They can be made of different materials depending on their function or need. The most common materials used are cloth, nylon, or leather although there are waterproof compartments on many to hold identification information.
There are different kinds of dog collars. Buckle collars are the most common and most basic, which are mainly used to tie your dogs out so are prevented from running astray. Another popular kind is the Elizabethan collars that keep the dogs from biting other parts of their body. Whatever type of dog collar you choose for your pet, it is important that you consider its safety, durability, and ease of use. Here is just a few of the many popular collars you can get through Doggie Corral.

Stop your Dog from Digging
Do you have a digger amongst you? A digging dog can be annoying, but for some dogs, it is their natural predisposition. Some dogs were breed just for that reason such as Staffy or Cairn’s. However, not all dogs with a predisposition to dig will dig, and not all dogs who don’t have that predisposition won’t dig.
Here are some strategies that you can use to help prevent or eliminate the problem.
Pick a section of your yard that it is okay for your dog to dig in. Install a large sand/dirt box and hide bones or whatnot in it to encourage your dog to only dig in that area. When your dog wanders from the location to dig in another spot harshly tell your dog no and move him/her back to the designated area. If you were not watching your dog while it was outdoors and it dug in a spot it was not allowed to, it is too late to reprimand them. You have to keep a diligent watch until you see your dog is well versed in where he or she can and cannot dig.
Some dogs dig to reach cooler grounds to lie down and cool off. If you notice your dog is digging to reach cool dirt and laying it, then you need to provide your dog areas in the yard where it can find relief from heat. Keep ample fresh cool water available for your dog. A small kid’s swimming pool makes for a great spot for your dog to take a quick dip and cool off. Make sure there are plenty of shade trees in your yard as well. If you cannot provide your dog with these options to cool off when needed, keep your dog inside with air during hot spells.
To keep your dog from digging in flowerbeds and gardens you can scatter a layer of small rocks on the ground. These feel uncomfortable to your dog’s paws and deter their digging. You can also spread a layer of ground pepper around your flowerbeds and garden. However, if they are of any size this can become costly and will have to be done several times until your dog is no longer drawn to those areas. Every time it rains, the application will have to be redone as well. A more effective solution is to place mesh chicken wire around your plants and the earth around them. However, aesthetically, it can ruin the appeal to a flower/garden bed. Another option is to scatter your dog’s feces ion the flower/garden bed. While doing your daily pooper scooper duty, instead of bagging and tossing, put it in your flower/garden beds. Dogs may like to eat poop on occasion, but they do not like to dig where poop lies. Go figure!
Some dogs dig out of boredom. Can you figure out how to deter that behavior? Right - keep them entertained and exercised.
Lastly, you can always prevent your dog access to your yard or area you do not want them digging in by installing fence. However if you choose this option make sure you provide alternative opportunities to get out and run and play.
