You can start to train your young child on how not to get bit by a dog. There are a few rules that can help you protect your child from getting bit by a dog.
Teach your child never to run or walk up to a strange dog. Tell your child never to pet a dog that is alone. If a dog is with its owner, teach your child to ask the owner if it is okay to pet their dog.
To help prevent a dog bite wait for a dog to come to you. Tell your child never to go up to a dog that is tied up to try to pet him/her.
If your child is given permission to pet a dog, tell your child to slowly hold out his or her hand and let the dog smell it. When petting the dog teach your child to let the dog sniff his/her hand first. Once the dog is done pet the dog’s body instead of the dog’s head or face. Of course, let your child know that he or she should never poke at the dog’s eyes, mouth or nose. When petting the dog never stare into the dog’s eyes or he may think it is a challenge and therefore may bite.
If a dog starts to growl, teach your child not to run from the dog. Stay still and look at the dog but not into the dog’s eyes.
