Do you have an Australian Shepherd?
The Australian Shepherd originated in the United States and was raised as a typical farm or ranch hand dog. It has been categorized with AKC and UKC as a herder. The average life span of a Australian Shepherd is 12 to 15 years. The Australian Shepherd has a medium to long weather resistant coat with straight to slightly wavy hair. Its coloring is that of blue or red merle (dark patches against a lighter background of same color), solid black, and solid red – all with or without white markings and tan points.
Australian Shepherd’s can reach heights of 23 inches at the shoulders for males and 21 inches for females. Average weight of the Australian Shepherd is 45 to 65 pounds males, and 35 to 45 pounds for females. They are very easy to train and have great traits such as devotion, intelligent, active, reserved with strangers and actually have a sense of humor. For the most part Australian Shepherd’s are good with kids but may nip or try to herd small children if not trained.

We had an Australian Shepherd growing up and we did indeed live on a ranch. We mostly had horses but cows, sheep and pigs were there too. Shep(original name huh?)not only worked with my Dad, he watched over all of us kids. He walked us to the road to catch the school bus and was waiting for us when the bus dropped us off at home. He lived to be 17 and I'm sure he was the best dog any boy could have had.
