Do you have a Rat Terrier?
The Rat Terrier originated in the United States and was used as a farm or ranch dog, companion to hunters, and a hunter of its own game of small vermin, varmints, and small game. The Rat Terriers average life span is 12 to 18 years. Rat Terriers come in a large variety of colors – chocolate brown, orange, and blue; all typically with white spots or markings and may even have tan trim. Their coat is short and dense with a soft to medium texture and low sheen.
Miniature Rat Terriers height is approximately 10 to 13 inches where as a standard Rat terrier can be as tall as 19 inches at the shoulders. The standard Rat terrier weighs in at approximately 10 to 20 pounds.
The Rat Terrier is relentless courageous by nature and a highly skilled hunter. They are eager to please, extremely devoted, alert, curious, smart and very fun loving. For the most part Rat Terrier’s are very friendly but can be quite protective of their owners. They are great with children and easy to train. With other dogs, Rat Terriers interact fine, but when it comes to cats, if they were not raised with them, they can become hunted prey.
Due to their smaller size, Rat Terriers make a great pet in almost any living situation. However, if you are a city dweller, make sure they are provided with ample room to run and play.

That dog looks a lot like the one my Nana and Grandpa had but their dog was a lot bigger than the size you stated. Tinker was a big old teddy bear that tolerated visits from 6 kids. He used to pull the wagon with one of us taking the ride. Those were the days!
ReplyDeleteI can sure back you up about them being good hunting dogs. A buddy of mine has one and that little dog was born for the hunt. When he sees the guns heading for the truck he runs around in circles in anticipation. If I could have a dog where I live, a good natured, hard working, little Rat Terrier would be my first pick.
ReplyDeleteWe are looking for a small dog--this could be the one! We want to get one from an animal shelter.
