When Adopting a Dog, Read the Contract

Signing a contract when adopting a dog is no different than signing any other contract. Know what you are signing before putting your Jon Hancock on it. You may find there are some things in the contract you may not be willing or care to agree to.

Most adoption groups and shelters have a contract one signs when adopting a dog. They are drawn up to protect both the dog and the new dog owner. Contracts typically require you to:

• Care for the dog in a humane manner
• Have the dog spay or neutered
• Return dog to shelter if you can no longer care for it
• Stipulate that you cannot sell, give away, or adopt the dog out to another person or group
• Agree to follow up contact from the shelter or group via phone or home visits to check on the welfare of the dog through out the dog’s life
  

Some contract can even become more specific such as stipulating where the dog can live (inside/outside) what type of food and how much to feed the dog, and stipulate that the family and dog go through obedience training. Some can even stipulate that the group or shelter has the right to reclaim the dog at any given moment should they feel the dog is being mistreated in any fashion.
