When your Dog Fears Thunderstorms

Just as some humans are discomforted by thunderstorms, so are some dogs. When a dog fears thunderstorms they can react in a variety of ways that are not typical of their normal demeanor. Some dogs will cower where some dogs may act out aggressively, even destroy things in the home. If your dog fears thunderstorms you can enroll them in a desensitization course; however this can take time and which won’t help much if a booming and cracking thunderstorms was to occur prior. For immediate ways to help comfort your dog during thunderstorms, here are a few tips that just might make you and your dog much more comfortable the next time it storms.

Dogs love to eat and love it even more when it is a special treat they don’t get often. During thunderstorms consider stuffing a Kong full of tasty treats that your dog absolutely adores. This will keep you dog busy during the storm and put you more at ease too.

Another thing that can be comforting for your dog during a storm is to put it in a comforting wrap. A form fitting dog wrap or blanket can help ease anxiety in some dogs.

Keep handy a spray or diffuser that contains dog appeasing pheromones – similar to the pheromones released by nursing mother dogs. This also eases anxiety in some dogs.

If none of the above help in lessening the ill effects that thunderstorms have on your dog, get with your veterinarian. They may be able to prescribe an anti-anxiety medication for your dog such as clomipramine, diazepam, fluoxetine, or paroxetine to help ease its fears.

  1. My dog always hides under the bed. She sometimes will howl if the thunder is particularly close. It's a good thing we live in the country and have no close neighbors.

  2. Hey George, you're lucky she goes under the bed. Our pampered pooch insists on being held. We usually give in because it's easier than listening to her whine.
