The Battle of Small versus Big in Watch Dog size

When one thinks of getting a dog for protection the first thing that generally comes to mind is getting a big and intimidating looking dog. Most think of the little dogs as wimps. Poor little guys can be so misunderstood merely due to their size with nick names like ankle biters, and yipper snappers.

One thing many people do not realize is that the ability for a dog to be an effective watchdog has nothing to do with size. In reality, many large dogs such as the Newfoundland’s have very little interest in alerting their owners to new comers on the property unless that person or animal is bringing lunch!

In all actuality, many of the smaller dogs are much more alert and willing to let their owners know when something is amiss such as the Cairn Terriers and Chihuahuas. Okay, the smaller the dog the less intimidating the look, but their bark is effective in alerting their owners to any stranger danger.

So before just automatically picking size over ability, think twice when selecting a watchdog. Take other things into consideration such as cost to feed, room for the dog to run, and are do they really care about much other than their next meal.

  1. Amen to that! We have 2 dogs who are Mutt & Jeff in size. The overgrown lug was bought as a watchdog. He watches all right, watches people come and go and does nothing more than wag his tail in acknowledgement. Now, the little lap dog the kids have is a different story. No one comes into the yard without her alerting us. Go figure!
