Strap it on for Safety- Dog Car Seats

Dogs are known to be man’s best companion. Traveling with your dog in the car is safer now than it has ever been in the past. Now, there are safety seats for dogs similar to that for infants and toddlers, but built for dogs in mind. Dog car seats are suitable for both short and long road trips and designed for your dogs comfort in mind.

Dog Car seats are designed for the safety and security of your dog while traveling. Most car seats for dogs include a safety belt that is secured in the car and an integral strap for securing the dog. Some also are designed for those dogs who enjoy looking out the window during travel with an extra safety strap.

Select the proper size dog car seat in proportion to your dog. Options such as color and washable material may be other things you may want to consider. If you live where it is cold, you may want to select a car seat for dogs that is made of wool but it is not as easy to keep clean and fresh. The more popular choices of fabric is nylon or cotton material due to their ease in cleaning.

A wide variety of dog car seats have a large seat, non skid rubber, zippered bottoms, in addition to removable interior and exterior covers. You should have no problem selecting the perfect dog car seat from Doggie-Corral.com so your can travel with you in safety, style and comfort.

Veterinary Dental Procedures

Did you know that your veterinarian is also a dentist? Most think that when there are dental issues, groomers’ first come to mind unless it is something major, and then an emergency animal clinic. However, it is not always necessary to run your dog off to an animal hospital for its dental needs. A veterinary learns many dental procedures while in school. Here are just some of those procedures and the reason behind them

Scaling
Removes plaque and calculus build up from the tooth crown, gingival sulcus, and root surfaces.

Polishing
Smoothes out rough enamel making it harder for plaque to build up.

Periodontal probing and charting
Determines and documents the extent of periodontal disease.

X-rays
Evaluates bone damage, tooth loss viability, and endodontic disease.

Fluoride treatment
Strengthen enamel, desensitizes damaged teeth, and provides temporary bacterial resistance.

Sealant application
Prevent plaque and tater build up

Local antibiotic treatment
Applied in gingival pocket for extended administration of antibiotics.

Mucogingival Surgery
Reduces periodontal pocket size; removes damaged tissue, debris, and subgingival plaque.

Root planning
Removes plaque, tartar, and dead tissue from root surface.

Guided Tissue regeneration
Regenerates the periodontium

Extraction
Removes a diseased, damaged, or loose tooth that cannot be saved.

As you can see, a veterinarian performs many of the same procedures even a human dentist does.

Natural Ways to Relieve Pain in your Dog

Just as bad as you would not to see a loved one hurt, the same goes for any one who loves their dog. When your dog is in pain, you will do anything to help alleviate that pain. Here are some natural strategies that may just help the next time your dog is feeling discomfort.

Magnet Therapy
Static or permanent magnets are said to improve blood flow. If your dog suffers from arthritis, hip dyspepsia or other joint or muscle discomforts, a dog bed designed with magnet therapy could be beneficial.

Dietary Supplements
Glucosamine and chondroitin can relieve arthritis pain as do omega 3 fatty acids, which act as an anti-inflammatory to aid aching joints.

Massage
Just as you can feel the healing effects that a good massage delivers, so can your dog. The manipulation of the aching muscles increases the blood flow for faster healing.

Reiki
Reiki premises is that individuals’ bodies have energy fields affecting health and that those fields can be altered by positioning the hands lightly on the body where pain exists. This has been found to be beneficial in some dogs who suffer from hip dyspepsia, arthritis, broken bones, and joint and back pain.

Setting House Rules for your Dog

There are five basic house rules that should be set in stone if you are a dog owner for your dog.

1. Eliminate outside the house in a designated spot in your yard.

2. No begging for food or food stealing. Also, set the ground rule right off the bat if your dog will be allowed to eat human food as an occasional treat, part of their meal, or not at all.

3. Teach your dog to sit instead of jump on people. Demand that your dog learn to greet people politely. Discourage barking, crotch sniffing, mouthing, pawing, and other unwelcome greeting behaviors.

4. No mouthing of anyone at any time as well as no mouthing of furniture or other human items. Instead, provide plenty of other alternatives and dog acceptable outlets like chew toys.

5. Decide right off the bat if it is going to be acceptable or not for your dog to be able to sleep or lounge on furniture. Have a designated area where your dog is allowed to sleep and hang out.

Dog Leash and Collar Care

When it comes to do laundry, who would think to toss their dog’s collar or leash in with a load. Not many; however, dog collars and leashes need a good washing from time to time too. Leashes collect dirt, particularly if they drag on the ground. Collars naturally begin to build up with dirt from dead skin cells, oil, and your dogs’ typical love of rolling in the dirt.

To clean your dogs’ nylon or canvas leash or collar, first scrub off any embedded dirt with a stiff bristled toothbrush and mild soap. Remove all tags. Put your dogs collar and leashes into a pillow case and tie it shut and run it through the washing machine. The pillowcase will help to protect the inside of your washing machine from the metal parts on both leash and collar. Use a mild detergent to ensure no irritation later for your dog. When done washing, simply lie them out to dry. DO NOT put them into your dryer.

If you use a leather collar or leash, do not wash them in this fashion. Leather should never be submerged in water. Rather clean these up by wiping them down with a damp cloth. Rub any stubborn dirt with saddle soap and dry clean with a dry clean cloth. You can spruce them up even more by finishing off with a leather conditioner, but only first, if you know your dog does not have sensitive skin or allergies.

Hemp Good for Dogs?

Believe it or not, hemp can be good for your dog. As a nutritional supplement, hemp oil is good for dogs for several reasons. Hemp oil has a high level of Linoleic acid, higher than flax seed and about equal to that of corn oil. Linoleic acid promotes the integrity of the cell membranes that promote healthy skin and hair.

Hemp is also great for dog toys. Hemp requires no pesticides or herbicides when growing making it both environmentally friendly but also safer for your dog when playing.

The concern for many in buying Hemp products is they feel hemp and marijuana are the same thing, however, that is not the case. The difference between hemp and marijuana is the amount of THC it has. Hemp has less than 0.3 marijuana has anywhere between 1 and 20 % THC – the psychoactive substance that cause the “high” when used for recreational use. You cannot get “high” from industrial hemp.

Here is just one of the great dog toys made from natural hemp that your dog will enjoy.

From the Field Tug-A-Hemp Natural Dog Toy Medium and Large
The perfect tug toy for your dog, this strong 100% hemp rope is chemical-free, non-toxic and entirely biodegradable. Made in the USA.

The Battle of Small versus Big in Watch Dog size

When one thinks of getting a dog for protection the first thing that generally comes to mind is getting a big and intimidating looking dog. Most think of the little dogs as wimps. Poor little guys can be so misunderstood merely due to their size with nick names like ankle biters, and yipper snappers.

One thing many people do not realize is that the ability for a dog to be an effective watchdog has nothing to do with size. In reality, many large dogs such as the Newfoundland’s have very little interest in alerting their owners to new comers on the property unless that person or animal is bringing lunch!

In all actuality, many of the smaller dogs are much more alert and willing to let their owners know when something is amiss such as the Cairn Terriers and Chihuahuas. Okay, the smaller the dog the less intimidating the look, but their bark is effective in alerting their owners to any stranger danger.

So before just automatically picking size over ability, think twice when selecting a watchdog. Take other things into consideration such as cost to feed, room for the dog to run, and are do they really care about much other than their next meal.

Seven Year Age Myth for Dogs

I am sure you have heard it – most dog owners have – the saying that for every year of age a dog is it is seven years old in human age. That is not necessarily true. The truth of dog age in comparison to human age is when your puppy is a pup, it actually older than you think both mentally and physically. Dogs develop more rapidly during their younger years. Here is a break down of what age your dog is actually during their energetic puppy days.

6 months old pup = 10 year old human
12 month old pup = 15 year old human
18 month old pup = 20 year old human
2 year old pup = 23 year old human

By the time your puppy reaches about 4 years of age, then the old adage of 7 years per one year age of dog equals out basically meaning that when your dog reached 4 years of age it would then equal out to a 28 year old human. From then on out the 7 year comparison works.

Adolescent Dog Behaviors and Fixes ~ Leash Pulling, Digging, and Food Guarding

As your puppy enters into its adolescent’s years, mounting may continue to be a problem, especially if there was no formal obedience training. If it is, ask yourself why your dog may be still be leash pulling, digging, or guarding its food.

If it still excessively pulling you down the street rather than walking matching your gate, ask yourself if it is trying to smell or explore. If that is the case, repeat as many times necessary the walking instructions you learned while in obedience class. If you never took your dog to obedience training, now would be a good time. The old saying you can’t teach an old dog new tricks is not true. It may take them longer to learn, but they can be still taught.

If your dog is still digging, ask yourself if it is bored or just looking for some fun. It may even smell something in the dirt and attempting to dig up some hidden treasure. If your dog is digging out of boredom, you need to up its exercise/playtime to burn off some of that extra energy. You can also give your dog its own section that it is allowed to dig in. Teach your dog to dig only in that location by burying toys and treats in that area. Reprimand when it digs in any other area. It will get the idea quickly just where it is allowed to play.

If your dog is still guarding its food when it eats, ask yourself if it is acting dominate. Dogs who tend toward dominate behavior can growl when anyone nears their food. Show your dog who is in charge by telling them to sit before you present their food bowl, then give them the okay to eat. After he is consistently calmer, add a treat to his bowl to get him used to hands being near his bowl. For dogs displaying this type of behavior, it is important to warn anyone in your home to prevent any possible injuries from a dog bite.

Adolescent Dog Behaviors and Fixes ~ Mounting

As your puppy enters into its adolescent’s years, mounting may continue to be a problem, especially if there was no formal obedience training. If it is, ask yourself why your dog may be still be mounting.

Is your dog trying to express dominance?
Dogs mount other dogs as a show of dominance. If it becomes a real problem, keep your dog on a leash when he is around other dogs, then reintroduce him to group play in a few weeks.

Does your dog have some misplaced sexual energy?
Male adolescents mount their owners in a fit of misplaced sexual energy. Stop this by quickly pulling your leg away and issuing a sharp “NO!.” Follow with another command to “sit” or “down”. Neutering hasn’t been proven to reduce mounting behaviors, however it may reduce it in dogs where the behavior is not habitual.

Adolescent Dog Behaviors and Fixes ~ Barking

As your puppy enters into its adolescent’s years, barking may continue to be a problem, especially if there was no formal obedience training. If it is, ask yourself why your dog may be barking excessively.

Is your dog barking because it sees or hears a stranger or other animal? It can be difficult to teach a dog to stop barking when it sees a stranger or animal in the yard. They see it as a threat to them or their owner and their barking is a way to alert you and the “possible intruder”. As the person or animal moves on due to your dog’s barking, this reinforces the behavior. You can reduce barking inside by teaching your dog the “hush/quiet” command by firmly saying “hush/quiet” and offer a treat after they have obeyed.

Is her bored or anxious? If your dog is barking excessively because it is bored or anxious, it is trying to tell you it is unhappy. It is a way for them to relive built up tension, anxiety, or energy. To eliminate this form of barking, make sure you are spending ample time with your dog by giving them additional exercise. If it persist, your dog may be having issues with separation anxiety and you would fare well by enrolling both of you into a behavioral program.

Adolescent Dog Behaviors and Fixes ~ Chewing

As your puppy enters into its adolescents years, chewing may be continue to be a problem. If it is, ask yourself why your dog may be chewing.

Is it teething? If you believe your dog is still teething, give it ice cubes several times a day to help alleviate the pain. Chew toys or bones may also help sooth aching gums. Try even freezing them before giving them to your dog.

Is he bored? Bore dogs will seek out ways to entertain themselves, and generally will find solace in chewing. Increase the amount of interaction you have with him. Take more walks or take out and throw the ball around in the yard for a while.

Is he anxious? If your dog is chewing out of anxiousness, reprimanding them at this point will only exacerbate the problem. Try to distinguish why your dog is anxious and work on eliminating the reason behind it. Often times it is not enough exercise, being alone too much, or inconsistent training.

Is he enjoying it? Most dogs finish the chewing stage by the time they are two, however, some dogs enjoy this stage immensely and will continue to chew forever. If this is the case, make sure to keep plenty of dog chew toys available and rotate them often so they do not bore of them and move on to your shoes.

Kids going back to School ~ What’s a Dog to do?

Summer vacation is almost over for most kids and that means back to the daily grind of kids getting up early and being sent away for the day while their beloved pet stays behind. Expect your dog to react poorly, especially the first couple weeks as it readjust its schedule. It was used to being able to play outside with the kids and receiving far more attention than when the kids are gone all day at school.

Here is a few tips that can help ease the transition:

Start getting your dog ready for the transition a couple weeks prior to the first day school is back in session. Most parents do this with their children anyhow, so just incorporate your dog in to the activity as well. This means early bedtimes, lights out and alarm clocks waking everyone up as if it was an actual school day. This gets your dog back into a school sleep schedule and your kids too.

Schedule 15 minutes into the morning schedule where your children can have a little play time/walk with the family dog/puppy before heading off to school. This will help lessen tearful and high anxiety good byes when it is time to head off to school for the day.

Right before it is time for your children to head off to school for the day, you’re your dog/puppy into its kennel and offer it a new chew bone or a stuffable dog toy filled with treats. This should keep him/her distracted and happy while the children walk out the door.

When the children arrive home from school, schedule a 15 minute or more break in their schedule to spend time with the dog. These things will help make the transition back into the school days easier for both your dog and your children

When your Dog Fears Thunderstorms

Just as some humans are discomforted by thunderstorms, so are some dogs. When a dog fears thunderstorms they can react in a variety of ways that are not typical of their normal demeanor. Some dogs will cower where some dogs may act out aggressively, even destroy things in the home. If your dog fears thunderstorms you can enroll them in a desensitization course; however this can take time and which won’t help much if a booming and cracking thunderstorms was to occur prior. For immediate ways to help comfort your dog during thunderstorms, here are a few tips that just might make you and your dog much more comfortable the next time it storms.

Dogs love to eat and love it even more when it is a special treat they don’t get often. During thunderstorms consider stuffing a Kong full of tasty treats that your dog absolutely adores. This will keep you dog busy during the storm and put you more at ease too.

Another thing that can be comforting for your dog during a storm is to put it in a comforting wrap. A form fitting dog wrap or blanket can help ease anxiety in some dogs.

Keep handy a spray or diffuser that contains dog appeasing pheromones – similar to the pheromones released by nursing mother dogs. This also eases anxiety in some dogs.

If none of the above help in lessening the ill effects that thunderstorms have on your dog, get with your veterinarian. They may be able to prescribe an anti-anxiety medication for your dog such as clomipramine, diazepam, fluoxetine, or paroxetine to help ease its fears.

Lost Pet ~ What can you do?

There is nothing worse that your beloved dog going off astray and getting lost. You search frantically for your dog, shouting out its name begging and praying it hears you and comes back to you. But it is not always as easy as just calling out to your lost dog to bring it back home to you. When merely calling for your strayed dog does not reunite you, here are a few tips to help you bring your dog back home.

It is imperative that you always have your dog wear some sort of identification – the combination of dog tags and pet microchips is the best route. It is also wise to keep current pictures of your dog. As dogs age, characteristics in coat color can change. Make sure to take pictures of distinguishing markings on your dog as well for identification purposes.

Ask friends or family for help in locating your dog. Have a home base where a person is available to answer the phone in case someone calls in reporting a sighting or finding. Have someone quickly make up fliers with a picture of your dog and contact information should it be found.

Begin your search within the area you first noticed your dog missing. Generally it is within your own neighborhood. Talk to your neighbors, mail carriers and newspaper delivery people, anyone who spends time in your neighborhood who might have seen your pet. If outside of your neighborhood, ask anyone who is willing to listen if they saw your dog. Hand out fliers if you have them already.

If no immediate reunification comes from that within a few hours, make sure you have fliers in hand of details of your dog: Picture of your dog, its name, and contact information. Also, if your dog has any medical issues that require regular maintenance, make sure that information is also on the flier. Offer a reward if possible. It doesn’t have to be large but can motivate some people who would have otherwise totally ignored your plea for help. Put your poster up around town. Post it on street corners and in area shops. Many places like libraries and supermarkets have bulletin boards where you can post.

Utilize the internet social media (FaceBook, Twitter, and local area websites (newspaper, county sites, school sites, etc)

Visit the local animal shelters to check if they have your animal. If not, ask if you can leave a description along with your telephone number in case your pet turns up there.

If you see police officers out on patrol, give them fliers of your missing pet. As they are driving their beats, they may very likely spot your dog. Although they may not be able to apprehend your dog, they can call you and tell you where your dog is located at.

Do you have an Otterhound?

A very rare breed of dog, the Otterhound, will definitely get you as the owner a lot of questions and looks when you are out for your daily walk. The shaggy Otterhound was valued as a capable hunting partner of otters in England for 100’s of years. It is thought that the Otterhound is a combination of the Bloodhound and the French Giffon but its exact origin is still a mystery. It is estimated that there is fewer than 1000 Otterhound’s left worldwide today.

The Otterhound are an easy going and a affectionate companion. Otterhounds tend to get along well with other dogs and even cats if raised with them, however their boisterous nature and large size may not be the best match with toddlers.

Otterhounds stand between 24 and 27 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh in anywhere between 85 to 115 pounds. Their average life span is 10 ½ years to 14 years of age. Their rugged shaggy coat can be any color but is often black and tan grizzle fading to a light blonde or gray when they age. The Otterhound’s double coated hair does not shed much but does require regular weekly brushing. An rather strangely outstanding and unique feature about the Otterhound is their webbed feet which makes them excellent swimmers (thus the otter hunting).

Otterhound are smart and very capable of learning if you approach them with patience. If you have a Otterhound count yourself lucky and one of the rare. If you are looking for a Otterhound you will definitely have to do a diligent search.

What to look at when selecting a Dog Trainer

When looking to hire a dog trainer, probably one of the most important things is that you and the trainer have the same feelings towards methods used in training. If you cannot communicate effectively or see eye to eye on your goal for your dog, then you can’t expect your dog to fare well little lone the training to be effective. After all, as the dog’s owner, you will also do a large part of the training.

When hiring a trainer, you should feel that the person you hire would verbally explain how to easily train your dog in a variety of ways and be able to demonstrate physically those procedures to you. Other qualities a good trainer should possess are openness to questions; be supportive and responsive; willingness to provide feedback; and the ability to teach you how to live and work with your dog.

Things that will quickly demonstrate that a trainer is not good for you and your dog are poor communication; an obvious prejudice against you or your dog breed; and a tendency to express negativity toward other trainers or their methods.
