Professional Dog Grooming vs. Grooming your Dog at Home

It is always best when possible for you to do your dog’s grooming yourself. During the time you are grooming your dog, you are developing a deeper bond with him/her and he/she with you. Most dog grooming care is simple, but there may be times where you are unsure either how to go about something or are nervous about performing a grooming technique. One of the biggest things that make dog owners nervous about performing is trimming your dog’s nails. In that situation, or any other situation you are unsure about, then seeking professional grooming is a great idea. However, don’t just take your dog to a groomer and drop it off. Stay with your dog during the grooming session and pay attention to what the dog groomer is doing and what tools they are using to perform the grooming procedure. This way you can learn exactly how it is done and your dog does not feel abandoned by you.

A good dog groomer will not mind if you stay and will often times ask you if you would like to help assist or try the procedure yourself under their supervision. If your dog groomer does not allow for this, seek out a new groomer. Ultimately you will want to be able to perform the task yourself so if you cannot be part of your dog’s grooming session, seek out a different groomer or take your dog to your vet. Vets are more than happy to show you what your dog needs in all aspects of its life to maintain optimum health.

  1. I have a large dog with a lot of hair. I tried grooming him myself but my inexperience combined with his unwillingness to sit still was laughable. He loves to go to the vets, so I take advantage of it.

  2. I know I should do it myself, but he looks much better when the vet's office does it. And, there's no mess for me to clean up after the job is done. He really doesn't seem to mind the trip or the grooming.

  3. My dog hates to be messed with. Petting is okay but don't be thinking he's going to sit still for a bath and brush cause it ain't happening. The vet gets paid good money to do this and I'm thinking he earns every penny of it.

  4. If I had a 'lap dog' I wouldn't hesitate to do his grooming myself. I have a great dane and he's full grown. He still thinks he should be able to sit on my lap but those toe nails of his can be deadly.

  5. I enjoy grooming my dog. I've always done it so he's used to being bathed and brushed by me. I can't imagine taking him somewhere to have someone else do it. It's a bonding time that both of us enjoy.

  6. If my groomer didn't let me watch once in awhile--I'd be leary letting my dog go to him or her. You never know if they are hurting them to get the job done.

  7. OMG! What a cute dog!

I have been grooming my dog for 2 years. It was bad at first--but I have gotten quite good at dog grooming if I don't say so myself!

  8. I like my new groomer. I did not like our old one--I could tell she didn't treat our dog very well. Always watch how your dog acts and go with your gut instincts.
