Keeping Your Dog’s Eyes Clean through Prevention

If your dog deals with tearstains, that will require ongoing maintenance, however, if you just want to keep your dog’s eyes gunk free, there are several ways you can help reduce debris getting into your dogs eyes resulting in eye irritations.

You can’t keep your dog indoors all the time. That would just be cruel. However, when you are outdoors there are things you can do to help prevent unnecessary debris from getting into their eyes. For one thing, when you are mowing the lawn, raking, and other yard work that stirs up the earth, keep your dog in another location. For one thing, it just isn’t safe, and another it will prevent your dog from getting unnecessary debris in their eyes.

When you are inside cleaning, using any kind of sprays, that is a good time for your dog to spend some quality time outside if possible. If not possible, keep your dog in a room where you are not cleaning in until all debris from cleaning solutions have settled. Do not dust around your dog either. Particles will linger in the air and easily get caught up in your dogs eyes. Again, put them in another room while dusting if you are unable to let them get fresh air outdoor on their own. Secure all household chemicals where your dog will not be exposed to them, such as on a high shelf or in a cabinet. When using toxic cleaners, such as bleach and ammonia, keep your dog outdoors.

As much fun as it may look for your dog to hang its head out the window as you are driving down the road, it is a great way for your dog to get debris in their eyes. The debris could cause a serious eye infection or eye damage and just isn’t worth the risk.

On longer haired dogs, if you keep its fur trimmed down around the eyes, it will help immensely in lessening the amount of debris captured in the eyes. The hair will capture a certain amount of debris as it is making it easy for it to fall into the eyes.
