No one enjoys an excessive barking dog, unless of course it is alerting you to danger- otherwise it can be just annoying. Neighbors quickly become irritated and some may even call animal control resulting in possible fines. Many towns have disturbance laws against loud, prolonged noise, such as that created by barking dogs. Some owners have even gone to the extent of silencing their dogs by having surgical remedies done to eliminate permanently a dog’s natural ability to bark. Not only is this expensive, but also sad in the aspect that it is a dog’s way of communicating joy, play, and alerting you of danger.
Here are some alternatives to getting control over your dog’s barking rather then putting him/her under the knife.
PetSafe Bark Control Pet Training System
Description:
PetSafe Bark Control Pet Training System – Bark Collar
How Bark Control Collar Works: The Bark Control Collar is easy to operate. Use the easy-to-follow Training Guide to introduce you and your dog to the Bark Collar. Place the battery in the receiver collar and attach it around your dog’s neck. When your dog barks, a warning tone is emitted. If he barks again within 20 seconds, he will receive a mild static correction. If your dog continues to bark, the correction will repeat with a higher intensity. This self-adjusting feature allows the bark collar to be very effective without over correcting your dog. While not harmful, the correction is a sufficient deterrent to excessive barking. This safe, effective, and humane method trains your dog when not to bark. One of the smallest bark collars available at only 2.3 oz. Automatically progresses through six levels of static correction. Not too strong for small, timid dogs, but strong enough for stubborn, larger dogs. Safety features include automatic shut-off if dog continues to bark beyond 15 times. Silver oxide batteries for longer battery life. ”No shock” cap allows you to turn off correction without removing the collar. Adjustable collar for neck sizes from 6″ – 28″ (pet should be at least 8 lbs.)

I'm one of the irritated neighbors. There are 3 dogs between my 2 neighbors and they all bark. It doesn't seem to bother the owners but it drives me up the wall. I'm going to print out this article and add the link. Maybe they'll take the hint.
ReplyDeleteMy neighbor has complains about my dog barking but is unwilling to keep his kids from tormenting him. He doesn't bark just because they are outside. They shoot him with water guns and poke sticks through the fence and throw things at him. If the kids would leave him alone he wouldn't bark. The neighbor says I should keep him inside if the kids are outside. I think he's narrow minded!
ReplyDeleteI know that dogs have to be taught when to bark and when not to bark but my neighbor is using a shock collar on his puppy and I hate hearing that puppy cry. I wonder if he is using it wrong.
ReplyDeleteWe recently got a Chow puppy and he barks at everything and everybody. We need to get this under control and fast. We live in an apartment complex and while they allow dogs, they tend to get touchy about barkers. We appreciate all the ideas and products we have found on your site.
ReplyDeleteI was really lucky that my dog was never a barker. The only time he would bark was at night, if he heard a strange noise. That was OK with me.
ReplyDeleteI think I'll send this info to my neighbor! One of his dogs never shuts up.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea--I like that the dog gets sprayed or sonic sound...I would NEVER EVER put a shocking dog collar on my dog.
