Your Dog’s Nutrition

Did you know your dog requires 6 essential elements in his or her diet daily? Yes, it is true – they require a certain amount of water, protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, and minerals. If you are unsure about which dog food to get for your dog that has the required nutrients it needs in its daily diet, it is important that you discuss this with your vet.

Many dog foods are loaded with soy and other vegetable proteins rather than animal proteins. However, animal proteins are more easily digested by your dog than the soy and vegetable proteins so it is important to make sure there is the proper amount of animal protein in the diet you give him or her. The easier your dog’s food is to digest, the less you actually have to feed him or her and the less stool that your dog will be leaving for you to pick up. However, if your dog is ill, your vet may require you to up its protein intake.

A diet to high in carbohydrates and fiber can cause digestive problems like constipation and bloating as well as excessive stools. Dog foods high in vegetable proteins are also high in carbohydrates.

A certain amount of fat is required in your dog’s diet. The fat helps to keep your dog’s skin and coat healthy as well as provide that healthy dog energy that keeps you out having tons of fun with your love.

It is important that your dog gets the require vitamins he or she needs to prevent things such as a weakened immune system, greasy coat, bone disorders, thyroid problems, or behavioral problems. However, do not give your dog a mineral supplement unless your vet prescribes it. Make sure you dog always has a fresh water supply as well to help keep your dog’s body processing working appropriately.

  1. I never knew you had to be so careful about buying dog food. I guess I just assumed that they were all okay. I'm glad I can shop here and not have to worry about getting inferior products for my Fluffy.
