Professional Dog Grooming vs. Grooming your Dog at Home

It is always best when possible for you to do your dog’s grooming yourself. During the time you are grooming your dog, you are developing a deeper bond with him/her and he/she with you. Most dog grooming care is simple, but there may be times where you are unsure either how to go about something or are nervous about performing a grooming technique. One of the biggest things that make dog owners nervous about performing is trimming your dog’s nails. In that situation, or any other situation you are unsure about, then seeking professional grooming is a great idea. However, don’t just take your dog to a groomer and drop it off. Stay with your dog during the grooming session and pay attention to what the dog groomer is doing and what tools they are using to perform the grooming procedure. This way you can learn exactly how it is done and your dog does not feel abandoned by you.

A good dog groomer will not mind if you stay and will often times ask you if you would like to help assist or try the procedure yourself under their supervision. If your dog groomer does not allow for this, seek out a new groomer. Ultimately you will want to be able to perform the task yourself so if you cannot be part of your dog’s grooming session, seek out a different groomer or take your dog to your vet. Vets are more than happy to show you what your dog needs in all aspects of its life to maintain optimum health.

Importance of Dog Toys

One of our readers responded to our request of stories about their dog. We would like to thank Denise for sharing her story with us and sharing the importance of dog toys in your dog's life..

“Niky was our dog for over 15 years. She was like a child to us. Niky was a part Terrier part Sheltie, or so we were told by the farmer we got her from. Very pretty. White hair with brown face, adorable face. She had a couple of brown spots on her too and very tiny paws. The perkiest ears and a long skinny tale with hair cascading towards the end. I would have to say her favorite toy would be the "Harley the HedgeHog". It even looked like a wood chuck, and when she squeezed it with her tiny mouth it made a almost snorting noise; kind of funny!! Niky got the big one and the small one, you know, cause she was spoiled. When we would get home from work she would first great us and her "Harley" would be the next thing she would run for wanting us to play with her before dinner. Niky took both big and small "Harley" with her where ever we went and she liked to go. Niky would even go as far as actually play catch with them and also slept with them with her paws around them as if she was hugging them. Niky was a unique dog in a sense that I swear she knew exactly what you were thinking, she understood you, but she just couldn't talk. Some days I wish she could have. The best times in our lives were with Niky. May she rest in peace."

Denise went on to encourage other dog owners to not give up when choosing dog toys for your dog. She stated that initially Nicky was very picky and they had bought several dog toys for her before finding the one Nicky would take to. Little did they know she would take to it as much as she did. Denise closes with “Some of our best times and memories with Nicky were playing with her and her Harley.”

Taking your Rambunctious Dog to the Vet

Transporting puppies and dogs that do not play well with others to the vet can be stressful for the owner, especially if the vets’ office is a busy one. Make sure you have good control of your puppy or dog before entering the vets office to prevent any unnecessary upset or injuries. There are many training collars that not only give you control of your dog, but also can help in preventing them from being able to bite another. Here is one such collar that can make any trip to the vet much more pleasant for both you and your dog.

Coastal Pet Halti Headcollar in Size 3 (adjustable)
The patented Halti headcollar, designed by Dr. Roger Mugford, gives you total control when walking your dog. It calms boisterous dogs; simplifies training; restrains biters; reduces fears; reforms fighters; and assists with restraining dog during veterinarian or grooming visits. It is also great for calming hysterical dogs during car travelers. Halti stops pulling because if you guide a dog’s head, the body will surely follow. The soft nylon collar fits comfortably around its face without restricting the mouth. If the dog tries to pull or lunge forward, Halti transfers the forward motion into turning the head sideways. This immediately discourages the activity without any undue stress to the animal. Perfect for leash control training and as a permanent training collar for large or active dogs.
Size 3 is recommended for the following breeds: Afghan, Airedale, Boxer, Briard, Chow-Chow, Dalmatian, Doberman, Greyhound, German Shepherd, Husky, Labrador, Pointers, Retrievers, Setters, Springers, Weimaraner, and similarly sized dogs.

Cesar Milan Illusion Dog Training Collar Medium
Illusion Dog Training Collar by Cesar Millan Cesar Millan and his wife Ilusion designed The Illusion Dog Training Collar to assist owners in achieving maximum control during walks. It is sized for small to large breeds. The unique design of the collar allows the owner to walk and train the dog using a slip collar correction, without having to stop and realign the collar to the proper position. It provides the ability to give a firm, yet quick and gentle, correction that eases up when the pressure is released. A normal slip collar falls to the base of the neck near the shoulders, which does not provide as much control. Cesar Millan, the acclaimed dog behavior expert, has cared for and rehabilitated dogs for most of his life. Cesar’s philosophy espouses that there are no bad dogs. Unruly and aggressive behaviors result from lack of proper training – people training. Cesar and his wife Ilusion realized that owners want to properly control their dogs during walks, but often lack the necessary tools to do so. They designed The Illusion Dog Training Collar to assist owners in achieving maximum control during walks.

Control that Barking Dog

No one enjoys an excessive barking dog, unless of course it is alerting you to danger- otherwise it can be just annoying. Neighbors quickly become irritated and some may even call animal control resulting in possible fines. Many towns have disturbance laws against loud, prolonged noise, such as that created by barking dogs. Some owners have even gone to the extent of silencing their dogs by having surgical remedies done to eliminate permanently a dog’s natural ability to bark. Not only is this expensive, but also sad in the aspect that it is a dog’s way of communicating joy, play, and alerting you of danger.

Here are some alternatives to getting control over your dog’s barking rather then putting him/her under the knife.

PetSafe Bark Control Pet Training System
Description:
PetSafe Bark Control Pet Training System – Bark Collar
How Bark Control Collar Works: The Bark Control Collar is easy to operate. Use the easy-to-follow Training Guide to introduce you and your dog to the Bark Collar. Place the battery in the receiver collar and attach it around your dog’s neck. When your dog barks, a warning tone is emitted. If he barks again within 20 seconds, he will receive a mild static correction. If your dog continues to bark, the correction will repeat with a higher intensity. This self-adjusting feature allows the bark collar to be very effective without over correcting your dog. While not harmful, the correction is a sufficient deterrent to excessive barking. This safe, effective, and humane method trains your dog when not to bark. One of the smallest bark collars available at only 2.3 oz. Automatically progresses through six levels of static correction. Not too strong for small, timid dogs, but strong enough for stubborn, larger dogs. Safety features include automatic shut-off if dog continues to bark beyond 15 times. Silver oxide batteries for longer battery life. ”No shock” cap allows you to turn off correction without removing the collar. Adjustable collar for neck sizes from 6″ – 28″ (pet should be at least 8 lbs.)

Ultralight Sonic Bark Collar
Description:
Small dogs will appreciate this comfortable bark collar designed just for them. This tiny 1.9 cubic inch device attaches to your dog’s collar and emits a harmless high-pitched sound whenever barking is detected. The most humane way to train your dog. Includes a training video.

Premier Pet Gentle Spray Bark Control Pet Training System (Citronella; Refills; Sprays)
Description:
Premier Gentle Spray Bark Control System – Citronella Spray Bark Collar Helps stop excessive barking the safe and humane way! A dog may be man’s best friend, but continuous excessive barking can certainly test that friendship. In fact, many towns have disturbance laws against loud, prolonged noise, such as that created by barking dogs. Many owners have tried surgical remedies. Not only is this expensive, but it completely and permanently eliminates a dog’s natural ability to bark. Spray Control Anti-Bark Citronella Spray Collars are an inexpensive, humane, but effective solution to excessive barking.
How it works: The Spray Control Anti-Bark Collar is simple to operate. Place the battery in the bark collar receiver and attach it around your dog’s neck. When your dog barks, a burst of all-natural citronella spray is emitted, which dogs find bothersome to their highly developed olfactory sense of smell. While not harmful, it is a sufficient deterrent to excessive barking.
Exclusive features: Citronella Spray Bark Collar uses a burst of all-natural citronella spray to deter barking. For dogs of all sizes and temperaments. Safe, harmless, and effective. Lifetime warranty.
Citronella Spray Bark Collar System includes: Spray control receiver and collar, Citronella spray, refill, Battery, and Operations manual

DOG CARE AND PROPER NUTRITION

A dog’s behavior is affected by the kind of nutrition that they get. With proper nourishment, there mental abilities are better and they are able to think sharper. Dogs use their mental capacities to understand the tasks given to them; they are able to comprehend well and can perform the activities with stamina. Poor nourishment decreases a dogs’ focus and makes them prone to mental weakness.

Most dry dog foods are soybean, corn, or rice based. Some of the better brands have meat or fish meal as the first listed ingredient. Dogs eat less of the higher quality products, thus reducing the cost. Use of better dog food will decrease the amount of excrement the dog produces as well. A healthy dog tends to live longer or maximize its lifespan when provided with proper nutrition. Nutrients such as fats, proteins or amino acid, and complex carbohydrates are the important minerals that are essential for growth and a strong immune system.

An estimated 40% of dogs are considered to be overweight . The cause of overweight dogs is their caloric intake is greater than what is burned off in a day. Excess calories turn into fat, and over time this causes the dog to gain weight. Overweight dogs should have their exercise level increased, and caloric intake decreased

Overweight dogs are at risk for health problems, muscle and ligament problems, severe joint as well as respiratory and cardiac complications. Diabetes in dogs can also be a threat. In conclusion, feed your dog a good nutritional diet and both you and your dog will benefit with his long and happy life.

Quick Tips for Bathing your Dog

The earlier you get your dog acquainted with bathing, the better, especially if you are going to be bathing your dog in your tub. If you have ever bathed a dog before, you know you get just as wet as your dog, if not wetter, and the first thing your dog wants to do when the bath is over is to shake off and run around crazy like they have just been renewed. Some unfortunately, if left to run outdoors, find the first dirt spot they can roll in and you are back at it again. Sounds so much like kids! Here are a few tips that might make the bathing experience for both you and your dog a little more pleasant.

Brush your dog thoroughly and remove any mats before washing.

Use vet-prescribed ophthalmic mineral oil or a drop of eye ointment to protect his eyes, and cotton balls to gently plug his ears.

Be prepared for the occasional shake off during the bath, and the occasional attempt to escape the tub.

Have old towels on your bathroom floor. It will save in clean up and slippery wet floors.

Dress to get soaked!

If it is warm out, consider doing an outside tubby!

Before attempting to bath your pet, have the tub filled with warm water no deeper then an inch or so above his hocks.

Use a sponge or your hands and lather your dog using only dog shampoo. I have noticed dogs feel safer if you use your hands, as they are more comfortable and familiar with your touch.

If your dog has a specific problem, such as an extra oily coat, you may need to use a medicated shampoo.

Work the shampoo into his fur from head to tail, paying special attention to known flea hangout spots such as the neck and in between the toes.

Your dog will more than likely try to drink the bath water however, keep the soapy water away from his mouth.

If you know how, bath time is the perfect time for empting the anal sacs.

Rinse your dog after first shampoo and repeat. After second time around, make sure you rinse out all shampoo residue to prevent drying of the skin.

Have a great time towel drying your baby. Make sure to have plenty towels available to do so. He/se will be soaked and you will be surprised by how much water their hair holds.

Don’t bathe your dog too frequently. Once or twice a month is ample, possibly less depending on your dog’s coat. Too often can lead to a dry, brittle coat and scaly, flaky skin.

If your dog runs into a skunk, there is odor-removal products available intended to get rid of the strong odor, but you may still be left with the lingering scent for a few weeks. Best bet is to do as you would any person sprayed by a skunk – bathe your dog in tomato juice first and then follow with a canine friendly odor-removal product.

Removing Mats, Knots, Tangles or Burrs from your Dogs Hair

Ah.. for the love of the great out doors comes the dread of the dreaded knots, tangles, and burrs tat come from outdoor adventures, some we partake in, and some that are furry pets find on their own. And if you are a hunter or live in the country and own a dog or hunting dogs, you know all too well about the burrs!

Knots, tangles, mats, and burrs are par for the course during outdoor romps, especially those off the beaten path. Mats pull on the skin and become even tighter when your dog gets wet from rain or a refreshing dip in the water. To remedy the problem of knots, tangles, and mats, use a special tool, the mat splitter, to cut off matted and tangled clumps of fur and to remove burrs wedged into the undercoat. To avoid nicking the skin, only cut out a mat with scissors if you can slide a comb between the mat and the skin; then carefully cut over the comb.

Burrs are another story. Often times they are best removed by attempting to get your playful dog to sit still long enough to pull each one out individually. It is best that you tend to them immediately as if they are left, they can develop in to a huge mess.

Quick Tips for Tending to your Dog’s Fur

Use a wire-pin brush designed for breeds with medium to long or curly hair.

Bristle brushes can be used for any coat length. Long, widely spaced bristles are best for long hair.

Short, closely space bristles are best for short hair.

Softer bristles are best for silky hair, and stiffer bristles for coarse hair.

Remove mats and large amounts of dead hair with a slicker brush.

Rubber currycombs or mitts are ideal for brushing short, smooth coats.

After brushing, use a fine-tooth comb for short or silky hair, or a wide-tooth comb for coarse hair.

The rake is used to detangle and remove mats, as well as to pull off large amounts of hair during the shedding season.

Mat splitters cuts out tangles.

For dogs with winter coat going into shedding, first brush against the direction of hair growth to make sure you're getting the woolly undercoat, which has a tendency to mat. Finish off by brushing the outer coat in the direction that the hair naturally falls.

Great Dane’s, Doberman’s, Boxer’s, and other shorthaired dogs are easy to brush. A regular brushing with this rubber currycomb is about all shorthaired dogs need to keep a healthy sheen.

Curly coats such as in poodles require a lot of shaping and care. Dead hair can mat it down, so be sure to remove the old to make room for the new.

Your Dogs’ Chompers

Dogs aren’t much different then people, and some will tell you, dogs are a far better being then people. That holds true when it comes to your dog’s chompers as well. Just as important as your teeth are to you, are your dog’s teeth to them. People are at an advantage. If we lose our teeth, we can always have false teeth made to replace them. A dog isn’t quite as fortunate, there fore even more reason to stay current with your dog’s dental needs.

Just like children, if you do not start them early on a great personal hygiene routine for their teeth, you will pay big later. Again, no different than a dog. By getting your dog accustomed to a regular teeth brushing routine while they are young will help immensely when they have aged and teeth problems become more of an issue. A dog with poor teeth is no different then you with bad teeth. They get toothaches and have difficulty eating. This can lead to numerous issues as well as serious mouth infections and malnutrition.

There are toothbrushes and gum care products made just for dogs to help maintain a healthy set of chompers on your baby. Ideally, dogs should have their teeth brushed daily, but at least three times a week may be more realistic. Any less than every two to three days is ineffective, as this is how long it takes for plaque to harden. And just like kids, it is important to have your dog receive a dental check up with your vet yearly. A clean mouth is a happy mouth!

Keeping Your Dog’s Eyes Clean through Prevention

If your dog deals with tearstains, that will require ongoing maintenance, however, if you just want to keep your dog’s eyes gunk free, there are several ways you can help reduce debris getting into your dogs eyes resulting in eye irritations.

You can’t keep your dog indoors all the time. That would just be cruel. However, when you are outdoors there are things you can do to help prevent unnecessary debris from getting into their eyes. For one thing, when you are mowing the lawn, raking, and other yard work that stirs up the earth, keep your dog in another location. For one thing, it just isn’t safe, and another it will prevent your dog from getting unnecessary debris in their eyes.

When you are inside cleaning, using any kind of sprays, that is a good time for your dog to spend some quality time outside if possible. If not possible, keep your dog in a room where you are not cleaning in until all debris from cleaning solutions have settled. Do not dust around your dog either. Particles will linger in the air and easily get caught up in your dogs eyes. Again, put them in another room while dusting if you are unable to let them get fresh air outdoor on their own. Secure all household chemicals where your dog will not be exposed to them, such as on a high shelf or in a cabinet. When using toxic cleaners, such as bleach and ammonia, keep your dog outdoors.

As much fun as it may look for your dog to hang its head out the window as you are driving down the road, it is a great way for your dog to get debris in their eyes. The debris could cause a serious eye infection or eye damage and just isn’t worth the risk.

On longer haired dogs, if you keep its fur trimmed down around the eyes, it will help immensely in lessening the amount of debris captured in the eyes. The hair will capture a certain amount of debris as it is making it easy for it to fall into the eyes.

Mucky Doggie Eyes

Mucky doggie eyes doesn’t always mean that your dog has an eye infection. Muck in the eyes, much like what we get and refer to as a visit from the sandman, happens due to the eyes natural cleansing. When eyes come into contact with various environmental pollutants, dust in the air, smoke, dirt, etc.. the eyes will naturally water to aid in the removal of the debris. Overnight or while sleeping, it is not uncommon for a dog to establish a mucky build up around the eyes.

Muck in your dogs’ eyes can be easily cleaned by gently wiping the edge of the eye with a clean cloth or tissue. Remember to wipe around the eye, never directly on the eye’s surface. You can also buy eye wipes made specifically for dogs.

However, your dog has dirt or debris in its eye other than in just the corners, flush it out with eyewash. Make sure you consider your dog’s safety and comfort by purchasing eyewash just for dogs; there are canine-friendly solutions available.

To use the eyewash, put the bottle near, but not in, your dog’s eye and squeeze the bottle gently. Be sure that the bottle is angled downward, so that gravity will assist you in flushing out the debris. Give your dog a treat afterwards, as this can be quite stressful for him.

Tear Stains on Light Fur – Is there Help?

Oh they are so cute when you first get them, the blonde bundles of fur, all fluffy with their bright eyes. But after a while your cute bundle of loving puppy begins to get tear stained eyes. This is common in many toy breeds of dogs, including poodles, cocker spaniels and shih tzus. These breeds are very susceptible to tear stains, which occur when a build-up of water from the eyes discolors the fur beneath them to a brown or red tint. The excessive eye-watering in these breeds is commonly due to the fact that their coarse hair often irritates their eyes. These spots can possibly lead to eye infections. If the area remains damp, bacteria will builds up causing a breeding ground for infections to develop.

There are special eye cleaners made just for dogs to help lessen the tearstains. However, whenever grooming around your dog’s eyes make sure to take extra precaution not to get any solutions into them. Once you’ve removed your dog’s tear stains, you should focus on prevention. There are many dog eye products available that you can add to your pet’s food to prevent the formation of tearstains in the future. If you are uncomfortable removing the tearstains from your dogs’ eyes yourself, have your veterinarian or a professional dog groomer due it for you.

Cleaning your Dog’s Eyes

Your dog’s eyes are just as important as your dog’s ears. Dogs rely on their eyesight and hearing to alert them of danger. This protects you as well. If they cannot hear or see danger lurking, they can’t protect or warn their master.

Before ever cleaning your dog’s eye, if there is a massive amount of discharge, it is a good indication that there is something medically wrong and you need to take your dog to the vet to get a full evaluation. Some dogs however do have an excessive amount of discharge, but make sure that is actually your dog’s nature and that the coloration of the discharge is normal. A few signs that can suggest that the discharge from your dog’s eyes may be an eye infection or other serious disorders are the evidence of redness, cloudiness, bleeding, or inflammation in the eyes. If you see any of these symptoms, seek your vets help immediately and do not clean your dog’s eyes yourself.

If you see no signs of infection you can clean your dogs eyes. Dirt easily gets trapped near and in the eyes of dogs especially with wrinkled faces or droopy lids, such as a bulldog, but any dog will need its eyes cleaned on occasion. Use a soft cloth dipped in warm water to gently clean the lids and around the eyes.

Cleaning your Dog’s Ears

Before ever cleaning your dog’s ears, make sure your dog isn’t currently suffering from an ear infection. If your dog has an ear infection, cleaning their ears can be very painful and can lead to more problems. If you suspect any ear infection, take your dog to the vet as soon as possible to have it looked after professionally.

Because of the shape of our pets' ear canals, dogs are particularly prone to ear problems. Bacteria, viruses, yeast and many parasites thrive in a warm, moist (and dirty) environment which is why cleansing your pet's ears should be a weekly ritual starting at a very young age. Cleaning ears and allowing adequate air circulation is especially important for dogs with long or floppy ears.

A gentle swabbing with a cotton ball dipped in mineral or baby oil, or a vet-approved ear-cleaning solution, keeps your dog's outer ear clean and dry. Ear swabbing is doubly important if your dog loves to go in water. Regular cleansing of your pet's ears can prevent many potential ear problems before they start and will save you time and money in the long run. Your pet depends on hearing as one of the strongest of his senses and it just makes sense to take good care of them.

Clipping your Dogs Nails

A good way to tell if your dogs nails are getting to long is if you hear clicking on the floor when they walk or if their nails are getting snagged in your carpet. Your dog's nails should just touch the ground when it walks. If you hear the clicking or see your dog is struggling with the carpet, it is time for a nail trimming.

Knowing not only how, but also when to cut a dog's nails is so important. Your dog's nails are growing constantly, just like yours. How often your dogs nails will need trimmed is determined by your dog’s lifestyle. If you dog does a lot of his walking on hard surfaces, he/she may not need much extra attention from you on their nails as the hard surfaces will naturally help to keep its nails filed down. However, if like our dogs, your dog mainly stays on softer surfaces, clipping your dog’s nails is an essential part of his or her grooming.

Not knowing how to cut a dog's nails and failure in clipping dog nails can lead to pain in your dog’s paws and can lead to permanent damage and malformation. If you are nervous about clipping your dog’s nails, take your dog to the vet and watch them clip its nails the first few times. Be observant of what type of clippers your vet uses and how you vet interacts with your dog while performing the trimming.

Clippers come in many sizes and shapes; the most important thing is to look for a tool that you can handle easily. Choose from a scissors-like clipper or a guillotine-style clipper. Another alternative is an electric nail grinder, which is expensive but less likely to cut the sensitive vein (the quick) inside the nail.

Grooming your Dog

Some people question how often one should groom their dog. Ask yourself, how often do you groom yourself? You should groom your dog as often as possible. As well, you should start grooming your dog from the moment you acquire him or her. The sooner you acquaint your dog with the grooming tools the quicker they will become comfortable with them.

Grooming is an essential part of your dogs health care. Nails that are too long not only become uncomfortable for them during their daily activities, but can get caught in things risking them being pulled out. Long nails can also change the gate/posture of your dog causing structural problems later on.

Unkempt teeth can fall out, cause halitosis in your dog’s breath, sore gums, and if left uncared for can lead to eating and nutritional problems which leads to a mess load of other problems for your dog.

Unkempt hair leads to matting and makes for a great nesting place for fleas and ticks. It can become impossible to find hot spots or sores your dog may be suffering from if the hair is not groomed on a normal basis. Don’t forget to gently wipe out your dog’s ears as well. Ear mites are quite uncomfortable for your dog.
