Interesting Dog Facts

If you are a dog lover you will find these dog facts entertaining!

For instance, which breed of dog was bred to fight badgers in their dens? If you said Dachshunds you are absolutely correct!

Did you know that some dogs have two layers of fur? The first coat is the hair that is visible and the second coat is hidden. The hidden coat is named the undercoat. The undercoat will help the dog stay warm in the frigid winter and cool in the steamy summer.

Do you think puppies are born with teeth? The answer is no. When the puppy is 3 - 4 weeks old he or she will have 28 teeth. The puppy is then able to eat solid food.

By 4 to 7 months all of the baby teeth fall out. Once this happens new adult teeth replace them. There should be a total of 42 permanent teeth in your dog’s mouth.

Do you think dogs or cats were first domesticated by man? The answer is….dogs!

Most people know not to feed their dogs chicken bones or steak bones. The chicken bones can easily break off inside of the dog’s body. When the chicken bones or steak bones break off, this can damage and hurt your dog. Your dog is likely to choke on these types of bones. Be safe and get your dog an approved chew bone from the store or online.

Surprise! There is no such purebred dog named a Golden Lab. This type of dog is either a Labrador Retriever or a Golden Retriever.

How long do you think dogs have worn collars? If your answer is since the Egyptian times you are absolutely correct!

Sadly there are 50,000 dogs without homes each year. Each dog has no human to care for him/her.

Removing Mats, Knots, Tangles or Burrs from your Dogs Hair

Ah.. for the love of the great out doors comes the dread of the dreaded knots, tangles, and burrs tat come from outdoor adventures, some we partake in, and some that are furry pets find on their own. And if you are a hunter or live in the country and own a dog or hunting dogs, you know all too well about the burrs!

Knots, tangles, mats, and burrs are par for the course during outdoor romps, especially those off the beaten path. Mats pull on the skin and become even tighter when your dog gets wet from rain or a refreshing dip in the water. To remedy the problem of knots, tangles, and mats, use a special tool, the mat splitter, to cut off matted and tangled clumps of fur and to remove burrs wedged into the undercoat. To avoid nicking the skin, only cut out a mat with scissors if you can slide a comb between the mat and the skin; then carefully cut over the comb.

Burrs are another story. Often times they are best removed by attempting to get your playful dog to sit still long enough to pull each one out individually. It is best that you tend to them immediately as if they are left, they can develop in to a huge mess.
