Thinking of Buying an Akita?

The Akita is a Japanese breed that goes back to the 17th century. Back in the day Akita’s hunted for bear, wild boar and deer by holding the animal in its place for the hunter.

In 1972 the Akita was acknowledged in the AKC. The Akita is getting more and more popular. In Japan the Akita is a police dog as well as a guard dog.

The Akita loves his/her family and will protect it with a vengeance. If you are a single person or a single mother with children this is an excellent dog to have as a family pet. With strangers the Akita dog will most likely be reserved. With other dogs the Akita may be quite aggressive.

You will need to exercise your Akita every day. It has to run in a park or large yard and/or taken for a jog on a leash. Your Akita will be very happy if he/she can spend as much time with you. Other upkeep includes brushing the dog at least once per week, sometimes more. The double coat on an Akita has a straight and harsh outer coat with a dense undercoat. This type of dog coat will protect the Akita in frigid temperatures as well as from water.

Your dog should live 10 to 12 years. Important Note: Do not let your Akita eat onions as they have been known to make changes in the red blood cells of this breed.

Enjoy your Akita. The two of you as well as your immediate family will have a wonderful life together.

  1. I didn't know these dogs were police dogs too. That is great! My kids would love this dog. They can help each other run off their energy!

    Looking for one now.
