Why People Choose Large Dogs

Many folks choose large dogs to feel protected. You may have a family and you want to have peace of mind that you, your spouse and especially your children are protected. A large dog will watch over you and your family. A large dog in a home will deter criminals as well.

You may live alone and want the feeling of security so you decide on a large dog or two. You know that your dogs will notice if there is anything unusual going on around your home or your yard.

A large dog will help to get you more exercise. Many people feel more comfortable walking a large dog versus a tiny lapdog. With a tiny lapdog another dog could come running and try to bite your little dog. With a large dog you have the confidence that your dog can protect himself/herself as well as you.

Any size dog will help relieve your stress. The love that your dog has for you will brighten your day. The bond the two of you share will help keep you healthier than if you did not have a dog.

Choose a large, small or medium dog to add to your family. You can find wonderful products for your dog to make him feel comfortable.

Why People Love Lapdogs

These days many people love lapdogs. You see people walking around with their beloved pet as if it is an accessory to their own clothing.

Some reasons people love lapdogs is because many of them are very cuddly. Lapdogs need a lot of attention. Lapdogs will sit on your lap or right next to you. Many times a lapdog will choose one person as their favorite and he or she is loyal to that person to the bitter end.

Lapdogs are fun for some people to dress up in little dog sweaters. Some lapdogs actually need the fashionable sweaters or a dog coat when he/she goes outdoors in the frigid winter temperatures.

Another reason people love lapdogs is because they are cheaper than a big dog. The heartworm pills are cheaper, the food intake is less expensive, etc. This is not to say that your dog will not get a disease that may cost you a fortune if you choose to have your dog treated by a vet.

Some ladies love to carry their lapdogs around in a dog purse. This is fine as long as you let your dog walk sometimes so he/she gets much needed exercise.

In conclusion, lapdogs are loyal, can be cuddly, love attention, may be fashionable, easier to travel with than a large dog and less expensive.

Ways to Keep Your Aging Dog Comfy

When you notice your dog aging and changing, do not try to do every single thing for him. Let him set his own limits for as long as he can.

For instance, if your dog is stiff in the morning, let him walk it out. Do not crowd him with treats and beg him to go outside. When he is ready, he will slowly walk to go outdoors to do his business. Although you should pay some attention so you notice when he is ready to go outdoors as you do not want an accident in your house.

As dog’s age they want a softer and more comfortable place to lie down. Make sure you have a spot just for your dog. You may have a dog bed or a dog pillow for your aging dog to relax and sleep on. If your dog sleeps in a dog crate make sure you give him a dog pillow or some type of blanket or pad.

Make sure your dog has protection from fleas and ticks. Check your dog more often as well for fleas and ticks since they are unable to fight off diseases as they once could. While brushing your dog’s coat you can easily check for fleas and ticks. You will also be helping your dog’s coat by stimulating natural oils.

Talk to your vet about reducing calories in your older dog’s diet. The last thing you want is an overweight dog. Being overweight will put unnecessary strain on your dog’s joints. Some vet’s suggest vegetables such as baby carrots and celery as well as fruit, dog biscuits and non buttered/unsalted popcorn.

If your aging dog is suddenly awakened by a toddler or child do not scold him for nipping. Your dog is sleeping more soundly, probably doesn’t feel as well as he once did and cannot help it. Keep young children away from your sleeping dog whenever possible.

You may want to ask your vet if your beloved dog can take aspirin or some type of medication for stiff joints or digestive problems.

Your dog deserves the respect and compassion as he ages. Treat him well by forgiving him when he has accidents as he wants to prevent them from happening as much as you do. If you have a new rug in your living room or other area, you may want to put up a baby gate so you do not have to worry that your dog will stain your rug by accident. This will help to keep the both of you happy.

Signs of an Aging Dog

There are a few signs of aging that you will notice in your beloved dog. The first few signs of aging include a decrease in activity level, your dog sleeping longer and more soundly, not being as excited to go for a walk, loss of interest in games of catch and lastly not caring as much on what is going on around the inside of your home.
Remember how your young dog would want to be in the center of all the happenings in the home. You may have tripped over him or her when you were trying to cook a meal. Now you do not notice him around as much.

Another sign of an aging dog includes the temperature and comfort. Your dog will choose to lie on the rug versus the tile floor. He does not care to sit on your deck or backyard in the extreme heat or the frigid winter temperatures anymore. Your dog also gets up more slowly and you will notice that his legs seem more stiff from time to time.

Your dogs skin and coat will change as he ages. You will notice fatty tumors or other lumps which in many cases are not cancerous and his wounds will heal more slowly.

You may notice that your dog does not seem to hear as well as he once did. You are most likely correct. Your dog’s eyesight is also not as good as it once was.

Your dog’s kidneys will not be as strong as they once were. You may notice more accidents around the house. Your dog is not being naughty, he just cannot hold it as long and may need to go outside more frequently. If it seems as if your dog is leaking urine please take him to the vet for a check up as soon as possible.

Interesting Dog Facts

If you are a dog lover you will find these dog facts entertaining!

For instance, which breed of dog was bred to fight badgers in their dens? If you said Dachshunds you are absolutely correct!

Did you know that some dogs have two layers of fur? The first coat is the hair that is visible and the second coat is hidden. The hidden coat is named the undercoat. The undercoat will help the dog stay warm in the frigid winter and cool in the steamy summer.

Do you think puppies are born with teeth? The answer is no. When the puppy is 3 - 4 weeks old he or she will have 28 teeth. The puppy is then able to eat solid food.

By 4 to 7 months all of the baby teeth fall out. Once this happens new adult teeth replace them. There should be a total of 42 permanent teeth in your dog’s mouth.

Do you think dogs or cats were first domesticated by man? The answer is….dogs!

Most people know not to feed their dogs chicken bones or steak bones. The chicken bones can easily break off inside of the dog’s body. When the chicken bones or steak bones break off, this can damage and hurt your dog. Your dog is likely to choke on these types of bones. Be safe and get your dog an approved chew bone from the store or online.

Surprise! There is no such purebred dog named a Golden Lab. This type of dog is either a Labrador Retriever or a Golden Retriever.

How long do you think dogs have worn collars? If your answer is since the Egyptian times you are absolutely correct!

Sadly there are 50,000 dogs without homes each year. Each dog has no human to care for him/her.

Caring for Your Older Dog

As much as we hate it, our dogs age just like we do. You can help delay aging by taking good care of your dog.

You should take your dog to the vet at least once per year. Your dog should have their immunizations. These immunizations include: distemper, kennel cough, hepatitis, parvovirus, rabies and leptospirosis.

When your dog is at his or her annual vet checkup, he/she should have a heartworm check and/or heartworm test along with intestinal parasite checkup. External parasites should be checked as well. (Such as fleas or ticks.)

Your dog needs to have good nutrition. You should not feed your dog human food or cheap food. When you feed your dog nutritious food you will have less stool in your yard.

As with humans, dogs need exercise to stay in shape. Exercise is wonderful for your dog’s health regarding being in shape and it will help your dogs overall feeling of well-being. You will have a happier dog when he/she gets exercise.

Clean your dogs teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste from your vet. Try to brush your dog’s teeth at least one time per day. Your dog may need a professional dental cleaning with your vet. Healthy teeth and a healthy mouth means no infection can get into your dog’s bloodstream causing illness in your dog.

Check your dogs ears for mites or gunk. Call your vet for so he/she can give you the proper medication to get rid of the ear mites.

Groom your dog to keep the dog’s skin and coat healthy. When you groom your dog you will find any potential problems in your dog. You will make sure there are no sore spots, dry skin, thin coat or body odor. Besides grooming your dog will help you build a strong bond between you and your dog.

Good Dog Collars

Make sure your dog has a sturdy and well fitting dog collar. Your beloved dog needs a collar to display his/her id tags as well as any vet tags that show the rabies number.

If your dog gets lost the dog collar, with all of the information tags on it, will help you get your dog safely back to you. You want to make sure the dog collar is not loose or starting to shred due to old age and becoming capable of easily falling off.

Perhaps your dog got lost and got scared and bit someone. The person that was bit can take the dog to a vet and make sure that all of the immunizations are up-to-date. This will help the person that was bit feel better knowing your dog is taken care of.

If your dog is lost you can call your vet as well as other vets in your area. You may want to ask to hang a picture of your lost dog on each one of their bulletin boards. You can call the animal shelters in your area to alert them. You may post a photo of your dog with your phone number and possible reward at your local grocery store, Laundromat, gas station, restaurants, etc.

Hopefully you will never accidentally lose your dog but in the event it does happen, make sure he/she is wearing a durable dog collar with all of the important information on the dog tags. (In addition, another excellent option is to get your dog microchipped.)

Get a Duplex Doghouse for Your Dogs for Christmas

Perhaps you have two dogs that you love dearly. Your dogs may go outside when you leave for work. You may be gone from work 40 plus hours per week. Your dogs need protection from the elements. A well made doghouse is the perfect Christmas gift for your best friends.

The doghouses have a raised floor to help your dogs even more. The raised floor will help keep the heat out as well as the cold.

If your two dogs get along well you can let them share a doghouse that is a duplex. If your dogs do not really want to be that close together you can opt for the doghouse duplex and take the inner panel out of it.

Cedar is a fantastic option for your dog’s new home. You may choose another type of wood and finish as well.

Show your dogs how much you love them with a new Christmas duplex doghouse. You will have peace of mind knowing that your dogs are cozy and warm while you are at work.

Do You Have a Teddy Bear Puppy?

A Teddy Bear puppy is a man made dog. The Teddy Bear puppy will stay looking like a puppy. The two dogs that are bred to create a TB puppy are a Bichon Frise and a Shih Tzu. You will find that the American Canine Hybrid Club classifies the Teddy Bear puppy under the name of Zuchon.

A Teddy Bear puppy typically does not weigh more than 8 lbs full grown. You may opt for a teacup Teddy Bear puppy which will weigh only about 4 lbs.

Your furniture, clothing and allergies will love the fact that the Teddy Bear puppy does not shed. Some dogs hair tangles more than others so you may want to make sure that you have enough time to commit to brushing your dog.

These dogs typically cost $500 plus. You can also find Teddy Bear puppies for over $1,000.

The good news is that the Bichon Frise and Shih Tzu dog breeds are easy to train.

Training tips include:
Using praise words or treats when your dog does the correct command. Never use a shock collar, choke collar or pull collar on one of these small bred dogs. You will increase your odds of hurting your little dog as well as matting up the fur on your dog.

Always repeat the desired behavior over and over. This will help to train your dog as well as let him/her know this is what is expected. If one day you let your dog do something and the following day you do not, you are only confusing him/her.

When training your dog keep him/her on a leash. This will help prevent your dog from running or playing around. If you are training your beloved dog outside, than you will keep him/her safe from traffic or running away.

Use two commands at the same time when training your dog. For example, if you are commanding your dog to stop than say the word as well as use the “stop" sign language word. You simply take your left hand with the palm facing upwards and take your right hand, turn it side ways and hit the pinky side down onto your left hand. Or you could put your hand out in the stop position.

Good luck training your Teddy Bear puppy. You will have a lifelong loyal dog that will steal your heart.

Keep Your Dog Groomed

You want to keep your dog healthy by keeping him properly groomed. First buy shampoo to keep your dog neat and clean. In the winter months you do not want to shampoo your dog too much. If you shampoo your dog too much during the winter you will dry out his skin. Summertime you may need to shampoo your dog more often. Dogs tend to roll in dirt and mud and may accidentally get into things that require a fresh shampoo.

Once your dog is shampooed, keep him warm with a towel or soft blanket. You may choose to use a blow dryer on your dog to help dry the fur quicker.

You can trim your dog’s nails at this time with dog nail clippers. Give your dog the full spa treatment! Keep your dog’s nails trimmed so they do not get snagged on the carpeting or other materials. When a dog snags his toenail it can be very painful.

Depending on your dog’s fur you may want to brush your dog before or after the shampoo bath. Some dog’s fur requires being brushed both times when receiving a bath.

You have now given your dog a wonderful grooming treatment.

All About Dogs

The dog is man’s best friend as he remains loyal to a kind master. The dog does not care if the master is rich or poor.

Most of history dogs have been domesticated. Dogs have saved lives in the past and will continue to help save human lives.

Dogs are a great pet because they fit easily into most lifestyles. Families like to own a dog to protect themselves, teach responsibility to the children and simply love their pet dog.

People that live in pet friendly condos can have a dog as well. Once the dog owner returns home he/she can walk the dog to wear off any pent up energy. When returning home the dog owner and dog can relax and/or snuggle together for the evening.

Dogs are wonderful for the elderly. If the elder person can care for a dog it is highly suggested. The dog has been known to lower blood pressure, give the elderly person something to do and feel needed and give the elderly person a feeling of well-being.

Dogs love praise and attention. Never purposely hurt a dog via punishment. If your dog is misbehaving learn how to control your dog. You can take your dog to behavior class to learn how to properly handle your dog.

It is no wonder that the dog is one of the most popular pets in the entire world. If you decide to own a dog remember he will need proper vet care and care with exercise and healthy foods. Owning a dog is a lifelong commitment for your dog’s life.

Dog Toys for Your Best Friend

Dogs need to have fun and play with toys just as you need your free time to relax and have fun.

If you work all day why not give your dog a fun dog toy to play with while you are gone? Your dog will love chewing on the octopuses’ arms.

When you return home, you can play with your dog as the plush octopus is 15 inches. Share some bonding time by playing together.

If you have children they will have a great time playing with the dog and dog toy together. You will hear much laughter and playful noises from your children and dog. Memories to cherish forever as someday your home will be an empty nest.

Christmas is fast approaching. Start thinking of dog toys to give to your best friend. Do not leave your dog out of the fun when you and your family are opening up your Christmas gifts.

Dog Medication & Dog Prescriptions

You can keep your dog healthy with dog medication. Some veterinarian offices charge quite a bit. You can get the same high quality dog medication for a lower price.

Allergy medications can help your dog feel better when he is having allergy issues. You do not want to see your beloved dog suffer when he is feeling miserable. Make sure you consult your veterinarian before you give allergy medications to your dog.

If your best friend is getting old he may have joint problems. Arthritis may be setting in and making it more difficult for your dog to get around. You can help solve this problem with arthritis medication. Watch the difference in your dog’s movements and wagging tail filled with joy that he feels so much better.

Make sure you give your dog flea and tick control meds. The last thing you need is fleas inside of your home. Fleas are a lot of work to get rid of in your home. By giving your dog tick and flea medication you will not only keep your home free of these pests but you will also keep your dog happy and uninfected.

Your dog must have heartworm medication. You do not want to take the chance of him getting heartworms. Heartworms make a painful death for your dog and a heartbreaking situation for you.

Dog Training Leashes

Dog training leashes can be helpful if they are used correctly. When your dog sees the leash and he knows it is time to go for a walk, he may immediately start to pull on the leash. If this happens, the rest of the walk will most likely be out of control. This makes you unhappy and if you are yanking on the leash and yelling at your dog to get him to stop, this is not a very good walk for either of you.

To help with the pulling on the leash problem, simply train your dog to stay calm when you put the leash onto him. Command your dog to sit and stay. If your dog does not sit and stay, simply stand there and command “sit and stay” again. He will learn that if he does not sit and stay, the walk will take longer to get to. Never give in to your dog or he will learn that being wild is just fine.

If you are still having trouble, practice the command of “sit and stay” without the leash in your hand. You may consider taking an obedience class to train your dog as well.

To train your dog check out our different styles of sturdy leashes.

Prevent Losing Your Dog with a Microchip

There are literally millions of dogs that become lost each year. Whether your dog got off of his/her chain, escaped from the backyard dog kennel, ran out the front door, etc., you miss your beloved dog. Your dog may have gotten loose by his/her collar falling off. Now your dog has absolutely no identification on him/her. To help find your beloved dog in the unfortunate situation that he/she gets lost, it is wise to have your dog microchipped.

The microchip is as small as a grain of rice. Your vet will put the microchip into your dog with a needle and special syringe just for this procedure. The microchip is implanted under the skin between your dog’s shoulders.

There is very little pain to absolutely no pain for your dog when the microchip is being implanted. When your dog is found, a handheld device is used to scan your dog for the microchip to find the one-of-a-kind alphanumeric code. You will be called when your dog is identified and has been found.

The microchip only works when the handheld device scans the dog. This works wonderful if someone has stolen your dog or finds your dog and decides to keep it. A vet can scan the dog and find that the dog does not belong to the owner. You will need to call local vets and hang flyers up that your dog is missing in order for the vet to even scan a particular breed of dog.

About Microchips:
You must be responsible and most likely pay a one-time fee to register your dog with the microchip company. If you do not register the microchip, it is no good.

The microchip will last a life-time for your dog.

You may want to ask your vet to scan your dog to make sure that the microchip is working. If the microchip is very old or is a different brand of microchip-some vets or shelter’s scanners will not detect the microchip.

The microchip will stay in the area of the shoulder blades of your dog. In some cases the microchip can move somewhat, but vets and those with the handheld device are strictly instructed to scan the dog’s entire body.

Some vets and/or shelters do not have a scanner.

Give your beloved dog as much identification as possible to save yourself from the heartbreak of losing your dog and increase the odds of your beloved friend being found by microchipping him or her.

Dog Boots for Your Best Friend

Winter is fast approaching. You want to make sure you keep your dog cozy and warm. Make sure your dog has fleece lined dog boots on when he/she goes outside to do his/her business. When you go for walks or runs with your dog make sure that he/she is donning dog boots as well.

Salt on your dog’s pads on the bottom of the foot is not good for him or her. The salt will eat away at your dog’s paw pads. Dog boots can help to protect the pads on the bottom of the paws. Also, your dogs paws will be nice and warm.

With snow comes wet slush which is also cold on your dog’s paws and filled with salt. Slush also turns muddy and will track it into your home all over your carpeting and/or wood floors. The dog boots can make your life easier by keeping your dog’s paws nice and clean.

During the summer months the dog boots work wonderful on stifling hot pavement. The dog boots will look great on your beloved best friend as well.

Your dog will like that the dog boots have traction on the bottom so as not to feel like they are slipping all over the place.

The boots come in sizes extra-extra small, extra small, small, medium, and large. You also have a variety of colors to choose from.

Why Massage Your Dog

When you massage your dog you are promoting health in your beloved dog. With massage you can relieve pain your dog may be experiencing, improve the range of motion in your dog, you are helping to make your dog’s joints more flexible and you are even helping your dog’s immune system.

With massage, your dog will have a better physical and emotional well-being. Massage affects dogs for the better just as it does for humans.

Your dog will trust you even more. You will build a very strong bond with your dog. If your dog has arthritis, speak to your vet about massage as massage can be very helpful to your furry friend.
Massage will help to relax your dog when he or she is stressed out. You will also be able to notice if something does not feel “right” when you know your dog’s body. You can make a vet appointment if you feel something that was not on your dog’s body in the past.

You can massage your dog behind the ears, neck, shoulders, back and legs. Gently massage your dog--or you can ask your veterinarian how to properly massage your dog. He or she will be happy to give you massage tips.

Watch your dog’s eyes slowly start to close and he or she may even fall asleep. You love your dog so help him/her feel fantastic with a massage.
