Giving Your Puppy His First Bath

Before giving your puppy a bath, your puppy should learn how to trust you. You can do this by touching his paws, his ears and opening his mouth a few times throughout the day. When your puppy gives you a positive response, praise him. You can also reinforce the behavior with small treats.

Set the dog comb or dog brush and clippers out for your dog to smell. When your dog gets less scared of the items, give him praise.

Also, make sure your dog gets used to the sound of running water. Keep him calm by using a calm voice to reassure him when you praise him. You may even want to give your dog a small treat.

If you will be using a dryer make sure you let your dog get used to the noise. It is recommended to use a pet dryer versus a human blow dryer.

If you have an adult dog, for your dog’s first bath you may want to have someone help you especially if your dog is a large dog. Make sure your dog has a nice experience when he has his first bath. When your dog has a good experience with his first bath, he will not freak out when it’s bath time every time.

Before you give your dog a bath, brush him to remove any tangles and mats. Otherwise, you will have to cut out the mats once the dog hair is wet. If you need to cut the mats out before or after you give your dog a bath make sure that you are careful with the scissors. You do not want to nick your dog’s skin which is easy to do.

Find an old shirt to wear when giving your dog a bath as you will get wet! Make sure the water is warm for your dog. Turn up the heat and keep your dog away from drafts during bath time. If you are giving your dog a bath in your bathtub, you may want to set towels down on the floor. When you take your dog out of the bathtub, you do not want him to slip. Plus, you can take the towels and simply wipe up the floor when you are done.

More Interesting Dog Facts

What is the shape of your dog’s face? Did you know that the shape of a dog’s face suggests how long it will live. For instance, if you have a dog with a sharp, pointed face that look more like wolves typically live longer. If your dog has a very flat face, such as a bulldog, often have shorter lives.

If you were born under the sign of the dog it is thought in Chinese astrology that you are considered to be loyal and discreet, though slightly temperamental.

During the Middle Ages, mixed breeds of peasants’ dogs were required to wear blocks around their necks. Strange? Yes. The reason this was done was to keep them from breeding with noble hunting dogs. Why? Because purebred dogs were very expensive and hunting became the province of the rich.

Did you know that a puppy is born blind, deaf, and toothless?

Which of the five senses do you think comes first for a puppy? If you answered touch, you are correct. It is the first sense the puppy develops. The entire puppy’s body, including the paws, is covered with touch-sensitive nerve endings.

Did you know the interesting fact that dogs have a wet nose to collect more of the tiny droplets of smelling chemicals in the air?

Have you noticed how much your dog likes sweets? The reason is dogs have about 1,700 taste buds. Cats do not like sweets quite as much as they only have around 473 taste buds. Humans have around a whopping 9,000 taste buds.

Do You Want a Bully Breed?

If you are thinking of getting a bully breed, you may want to take a quiz to see if this dog is right for you. Bully breeds can be a lot of work and this quiz can help you decide if this dog is right for you.

Bully dogs are very loyal to their family. Many people think bully dogs will attack a stranger but this dog will more than likely lick a stranger’s hand than bite it.

This dog breed loves people for companionship. Bully dogs will get along with other pets in your home, but you will most likely have to spend extra time working at making sure everyone of your pets is happy at first in your household.

If you love exercising outside then this is another plus on getting this breed of dog. Bully’s want and need to be kept active every day. If you are a couch potato and you are looking for a dog that will snuggle for hours with you, this is not the breed of dog you want to get.

To train your bully you will need to spend 8 to 10 hours per week if you want to be successful. You need to train your bully properly and get your dog out socializing so you end up with the best dog there is.

When you do take your dog out for socialization it is best to do so with other bully dogs. Check online or ask your local veterinarian and/or humane society where other bully groups are in your area. You do not want to take your bully to the park to socialize with other dogs. Your dog may do fine but it is not worth the risk. Many times your dog will get blamed if there is a fight due to your dog’s size and bad reputation rap bully’s have.

Look at your dog. Does he or she have a lot of spots? If so, perhaps Spot or S.W.A.K. would fit your dog as his/her name. Is your dog crabby most of the time? Scrooge may be a great name for you to choose. It’s nice to have a dog’s name that fits your dog. It sounds silly if you name your dog Spitfire and your dog is a complete couch potato. Although this makes for a great sense of humor!

If you like a certain famous singer, person from history or celebrity you may name your dog after him or her.

For something different you can change the spelling of your dog’s name. Remember if you do this you will have to let your veterinarian know how to spell it and/or the staff for your dog’s medical file.

Have fun choosing your dog’s name and start to train your dog to learn his or her name by using it frequently when you look at him or her.

Change "Wild Dog Playing" with Dog Toys

If your dog likes to play ball or any type of game and is wild, you can change that. For example, if you have a large dog and the two of you are playing ball or your dog is even playing with the ball alone and tramples anything it his way--- you can help to change that.

Many large dogs are powerful breeds. The breed of dog you have may require a lot of exercise to get energy out. It is wonderful that your dog is having so much fun but you still need to establish rules and boundaries or your dog will take advantage of playtime where you are no longer the pack leader to him.

Your dog wants you to give him rules and structure even during playtime. The first step to playing ball is to make sure your dog is calm before you throw the ball. Have your dog sit and give you eye contact (which is a way of respect to you) first. You are in control and he enjoys that the reward is your attention as well as the ball.

Pay attention to your tone of voice and make sure it is calm and assertive, not overly excited. It is helpful if you practice alone where there are no other people especially children and dogs. When you know your dog can play in a calm and submissive manner your dog can be around others. Another good idea is to have your dog play with the ball in the house alone as well as in your yard so it’s not super exciting to him as he gets desensitized to playing with it.

If you take your dog for a walk before you play with the ball, he will have less energy and play more calmly. This way he will not run over anything and everything in his path when he plays. Repeat this often as dogs learn from repetition.

You may want to hide the ball from your dog so he will learn how to play using his nose. Search and rescue games are good for your dog to learn more on how to play with his nose. While playing with the ball, play with other toys so that your dog does not get obsessed with playing with only the ball.

Enjoy playing safely with your dog!

Do You Own a Spinone Italiano Dog?

If you own a Spinone Italiano dog you know that it is strong-boned, solidly built and has a well-muscled body. Other people may have mistaken your dog for a German Wirehaired Pointer as they do look somewhat alike to the untrained eye. The Spinone Italiano has a long head and pronounced occipital whereas the German Wirehaired (and other breeds) do not.

The Spinone Italiano dog is an Italian dog breed. The reason this dog breed was bred was because it is a versatile gun dog. It still is a versatile gun dog to this day. This dog breed is friendly, loyal and alert. The fur is close lying and wiry.

The Spinone is an ancient breed dating all of the way back to approximately 500 BC. Many people use this dog breed for hunting, retrieving and pointing. This dog breed is highly intelligent and is also used as assistant dogs. The friendly demeanor makes this dog an excellent companion as well.

Diseases in this dog breed include cerebella ataxia which is a deadly condition that is hereditary. Both sire and dam must be carriers to pass this condition onto their pups. There have been no puppies with this deadly condition living past the age of twelve months. Thankfully the AHT in the UK has developed a test for cerebella ataxia. This test is 95% accurate.

Hip dysplasia is another condition that can affect this large dog breed. Hip dysplasia makes it difficult for the dog to do any exercise and it is painful as well. If the dog has severe hip dysplasia it can have the ball and socket joint surgically fixed with an artificial joint. The average life expectancy of this dog breed is eight and a half years.

What Does Your Dog Mean to You?

People treat their dogs differently. Some folks have a dog only for hunting. The dog may stay out in the kennel for much of the time. When the owner needs his hunting buddy he takes the dog hunting to do his job. When the dog owner needs to exercise and train the dog, the dog will be let free out of the kennel.

Other dog owners think of their dog as a part of the family. The dog means just as much to them as the other members in the family “pack.” The dog is treated like a king or queen. Only when a dog sweater or dog jacket is protecting the beloved dog will it be let outdoors. The dog may sleep in one of the family member’s bed at night. The dog may have his own plush dog bed to sleep in. Treats are happily given to the dog. Gifts are bought for the dog. Some even celebrate their dogs' birthdays.

Many elderly people adore their dogs. Their dog makes them feel safe. Even if the dog is small, it can help to protect them as the bark will warn the owner. Dogs help keep the elderly healthier by lowering their blood pressure. Dogs are a fantastic companion for the elderly.

A single person will enjoy having a dog. The dog is someone to walk outside with and get exercise. The dog will snuggle up on the couch and/or bed by the single person if allowed.

Your Dog Questions Answered

Should I really dress my dog up in a dog sweater or dog jacket outside?
Yes, if you have a thin-coated dog it needs a dog blanket or a warm dog sweater if they go outside in the cold for extended periods without being active.

I put a dog sweater or dog jacket on my dog when we go outside in the cold. Now I hear I should put dog boots on my dog. Why?
Dog boots are helpful when the snow is icy or if the dog is running on streets with salt or other de-icing chemicals that are dangerous for the dog to lick off his/her paws. Also, it eats away at the ice, so you know it is eating away at your dog’s paws.

My female dog used to be so affectionate. Now she is growling and snarling at me and pretty much wants nothing to do with me. Any ideas why she would be doing this?
As long as you do not have someone bothering your dog such as a small child trying to pull your dog’s hair or constantly try to ride your dog, your female dog is most likely pregnant.

My dog is going to have puppies in a few days. When she starts to go into labor, what should I do?

Make sure you have a very large box for your dog that is filled with newspapers, old towels as well as sheets. You want to make sure that the box is large enough for your dog and the new puppies.

You will know when your dog is going to go into labor after you take her temperature and it drops below 100°F. Once your dog becomes very restless, keeps on urinating and has vaginal discharge she is ready to have her puppies.

When labor starts--leave your dog alone. Make sure the area is calm and quiet. Afterall, in this time you would not want to have a lot of people running around, TV blaring, someone talking loud on the phone, etc. As soon as the puppies are born, offer your new mother a drink of water and some food. A little later try to get her to go outside. Treat your dog with extra care at this time just as you would a new human mother.

Keep your questions coming!

Last Chance Before Christmas Dog Products!

Make your life easier and order your Christmas dog products from one website. The shop finds the best dog products for you. You will find dog collars, dog sweaters, dog boots, dog bowls, dog beds, dog insurance, dog jackets, dog toys and more.

You will save time by doing the above. When you click on the link, you will be brought to an array of dog websites. Find the product or products that you need for Christmas.

If your dog’s bed is getting old and you really cannot wash it or it just may fall apart in the washing machine, now would be the perfect time to buy a new dog bed. Your dog will thank you.

If your dog is getting arthritic a new orthopedic bed is the answer. Let your dog sleep in comfort like he/she deserves to.

Do you live where it snows and a lot of salt is put down? If you do, you really should get dog boots for your dog. The salt eats away at your dog’s padding on his paws. When your dog licks the salt off of his or her paws he/she is ingesting the salt which is not good for him/her.

Watch your dog have a blast with a new dog toy this Christmas. He or she will get hours of joy from one simple dog toy. Make his or her day.

Dog insurance for Christmas is an excellent gift. You will be able to care for your dog even better when you know you are covered. As your dog ages he or she needs to go for vet check-ups. More and more health problems will most likely pop up. Protect yourself.

Let your dog have fun and take part in the Christmas festivities by opening up his or her very own dog Christmas gift.

Fun Things to Do with Your Dog in the Snow

There are many fun things you and your dog can do in the snow. Get out your snowshoes and walk in the crystal white snow with your dog. You may want to put snow boots on your dog so his paws don’t freeze. Enjoy an hour or however long depending on the weather, just relaxing and walking. Take in all of the beautiful scenery together.

Go sledding with your dog. Make sure your dog is safe on the sled or let your dog run beside you and anyone else that is sledding in your family. All of you will have a ball together going up and down the hill together. Make sure there is hot tea and/or hot cocoa waiting for all of you when you return inside.

Have fun playing catch with your dog with snowballs. Just make sure the snowballs are not filled with ice and end up hurting your dog. Your dog may have fun catching the snowballs and if they are packed well enough, bringing them back to you. You could also play the game of monkey-in-the-middle and have your dog in the middle trying to catch the snowball you and the other person are playing catch with.

Simply walk or run in the snow with your dog. Watch your dog frolic in the snow. At times, even old dogs liven up and look like a puppy when they play in the snow.

You and your dog can go cross-country skiing together. Your dog will have fun running beside his best friend. This is fantastic exercise for the both of you.

Bring a camera to all of the above snow adventures. You are sure to capture some cherished memories and not to mention amazing photos.

Why We Love Dogs

There are many reasons why we love dogs. Dogs can keep us company when we are lonely. Dogs are the perfect visitor for folks that are shut ins at nursing homes. The dog will perk up the elderly and studies have shown that our blood pressure lowers when we pet a dog and are around a dog.

We love dogs because who else is so happy to see us when we get home? We are showered with licks, a wagging tail and a dog that practically wants to leap into our arms.

Dogs are great companions to help us get outside and exercise. Our dogs need fresh air, to run off energy and get exercise. We walk or jog with our dogs. Many of us like to take our dogs to the beach or lake (when dogs are allowed). We like to play Frisbee or catch with a ball together. All of these are great exercise for our dog and us.

We love our dog because we can tell our dog our deepest secrets and our dog will patiently listen and never tell a soul. Everyone loves a confidant.

Our dogs love to snuggle with us and give us love when we do not even ask for it. Our dogs are happy to please us every single moment. When our dog accidentally has an accident on the carpeting or tile floor, he or she is very upset because he/she only wants to please us--who they treat and look up to as if we were their God.

Many people have thought, “My goal in life is to be as good of a person my dog already thinks I am.” ~Author Unknown

Your Dog and Fear

You love your dog and you do not want to see him or her afraid and cower. You should know that it is easier to traumatize an animal than a human being. When fear is caused to an animal it is more cruel than fearing pain. Animals are more motivated by fear than by pain. Your dog and other animals have a lower pain drive and a higher fear drive. (Therefore, shock collars are not a good idea.)

Your dog will have different things that will make him or her fearful. Some things you or someone else will teach him/her to fear, some things will innately trigger fear and some things your dog will never fear naturally.

Be conscious of what you do as dogs learn from you and others he or she is around. Your dog automatically does observational learning and will learn what others fear this way. On a good note, your dog can learn that many things are not frightening when he/she sees others that are not fearful.

A great example is a calm mother dog that takes care of her puppies. Hopefully your dog had this benefit as once a fear is learned, it is there forever.

Although your dog should have some sort of fear or he/she will learn that nothing is dangerous. For example, your dog should learn to be somewhat fearful of cars driving by especially if you live right off of a dangerous highway. You do not want your dog to become totally immune to any type of fear as he/she will forget that some things can be very dangerous.

When you bring your puppy or dog home, try to make everything you do with your dog positive. Perhaps a big part of your life is swimming. If you want to take your dog swimming at a lake, make it a safe feeling and positive experience. Because fears in dogs last their entire lifetime, you do not want your dog afraid to swim with you-- permanently.

Keeping Your Dog Safe at Christmas

There are many dangerous things lurking around your home the closer it gets to Christmas. You can help prevent an accident with your dog.

The first thing you want to do is make sure that all of your Christmas ornaments are too big for your dog to swallow. A great way to measure is to take a toilet paper tube or a paper towel tube. If the ornament fits through the tube, it is too small and should be packed away--keeping your dog safe at Christmas.

If you put a Christmas tree up, make sure you do not use tinsel. Tinsel is shiny and moves which catches your dog’s eye as something interesting. Some dogs eat tinsel and this can bind him or her up. You do not need a large emergency vet bill around the holidays! Not to mention you do not want to see your beloved dog suffer.

Another way to keep your dog safe at Christmas is to make sure your guests are not sneaking him or her treats. You know, you have the snacks sitting out before dinner. A guest feeds your dog a cracker here and there, then a child drops about a half cup of food on the floor that your dog rushes to lap up, etc. Your dog’s stomach cannot handle this much people food. It is not good for your dog to eat people food. He or she needs his dog food to get all of his/her nutrients that are needed to stay healthy. Plus, you do not want to clean up vomit or diarrhea due to all of the food given to your dog.

With a little effort, you can keep your dog safe at Christmastime.

Thinking of Getting a Bearded Collie?

The Bearded Collie is also known as the “Beardie” and lives around 15 years. The Bearded Collie grows to be 21” to 22” and weighs anywhere between 45 pounds and 55 pounds.

If you are thinking about breeding this dog, it will have an average of seven pups per litter.

The Bearded Collie is the traditional dog of the Scottish Shepherd. The Bearded Collie was bred to herd sheep as well as cattle. This dog is very reliable and strong.

This dog gets along great with children so this is a perfect dog for a family. This dog will also get along with the pets you already have or will get in the future. Make sure your dog does not escape because it will get along well with strangers, too. Someone may fall in love with your dog and snatch him/her up!

If you do decide on the Bearded Collie you need to give it a lot of exercise as it is a very active dog needing strenuous exercise. Your kids and/or you could go for a run or walk after dinner. Play outdoors with dog toys such as a Frisbee, ball, or other type of toy.

The disposition of this dog is cheerful, sociable, independent and clever. You will enjoy this highly intelligent dog. Remember to keep him/her busy or he/she will invent fun things to keep himself/herself occupied.

Be prepared to groom this breed of dog. You must groom this dog at least one time per week. You will need to lift up this dog’s coat and brush the hair close to the skin. Keep the hair between the pads of the paws trimmed. Clean this dog’s ears regularly. Don’t forget the toenail trimming, too.

You may choose a Bearded Collie in shades of gray or chocolate. Some of these dogs have white on their fur as well.

This dog is an excellent companion for anyone that can keep it busy and is frequently home as this breed loves people.

Do You Own a German Shepherd?

If you own a German Shepherd you know how loyal and protective he or she is to you and your family. The German Shepherd came from Germany that dates back to 1899. The German Shepherd is very popular as it is one of the most registered dogs. For instance, in 1919, fifty four GSD’s were registered. In 1926 over 8, 000 GSD’s were registered.

The German Shepherd is a herding dog as well as a guard dog for sheep. These dogs are also police dogs as well as military dogs.

This dog breed was popular at the end of World War I. Soldiers commented positively on the GSD. Animal actors Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart helped to make this breed of dog even more popular. Unfortunately, the first GSD in the USA was “Queen of Switzerland” and her puppies had defects due to poor breeding. Due to this situation, in the late 1920’s the GSD breed became much less popular.

In 2009 the GSD became the second most popular dog in the USA and popular in other areas of the world.

In the past the GSD was bred to become a working dog and its breeding strictly controlled to keep diseases and defects away. These days the GSD has no regulation on breeding so genetic problems such as color-paling, hip dysphasia, weakness of temperament, missing teeth and monorchidism are common. Some German Shepherd dog’s have bent or folded ears which do not fully turn upwards when the dog reaches maturity.

As you know, GSD can be a variety of colors. The most common colors of GSD is tan/black and red/black. GSD weigh 49 pounds to 88 pounds. The ideal height is 25 inches in this breed of dog.

Surely you know your German Shepherd is very intelligent. The GSD can claim to be the third most intelligent breed of dog.
