Change "Wild Dog Playing" with Dog Toys

If your dog likes to play ball or any type of game and is wild, you can change that. For example, if you have a large dog and the two of you are playing ball or your dog is even playing with the ball alone and tramples anything it his way--- you can help to change that.

Many large dogs are powerful breeds. The breed of dog you have may require a lot of exercise to get energy out. It is wonderful that your dog is having so much fun but you still need to establish rules and boundaries or your dog will take advantage of playtime where you are no longer the pack leader to him.

Your dog wants you to give him rules and structure even during playtime. The first step to playing ball is to make sure your dog is calm before you throw the ball. Have your dog sit and give you eye contact (which is a way of respect to you) first. You are in control and he enjoys that the reward is your attention as well as the ball.

Pay attention to your tone of voice and make sure it is calm and assertive, not overly excited. It is helpful if you practice alone where there are no other people especially children and dogs. When you know your dog can play in a calm and submissive manner your dog can be around others. Another good idea is to have your dog play with the ball in the house alone as well as in your yard so it’s not super exciting to him as he gets desensitized to playing with it.

If you take your dog for a walk before you play with the ball, he will have less energy and play more calmly. This way he will not run over anything and everything in his path when he plays. Repeat this often as dogs learn from repetition.

You may want to hide the ball from your dog so he will learn how to play using his nose. Search and rescue games are good for your dog to learn more on how to play with his nose. While playing with the ball, play with other toys so that your dog does not get obsessed with playing with only the ball.

Enjoy playing safely with your dog!

Choosing a Dog Toy for Christmas

There are different reasons to choose a dog toy for Christmas. For instance, your dog may love a squeaky toy like most dogs because when your dog hears the toy squeak, he or she thinks they have caught an injured animal.

Another dog toy you can buy for your dog at Christmas is a dog Frisbee. Frisbees are superior exercise. The best choice for a Frisbee for your dog is a soft plastic so that your dog’s mouth or teeth are less likely to become injured. Dogs that play Frisbee the best are Labrador retrievers and Border collies.

Do not forget the popular dog ball for Christmas. Make sure that the ball is large enough so your dog will not choke. A good way to test the ball is to see if it will go through a paper towel tube or toilet paper tube. If the ball does not go through either of the tubes, your dog is safe. Choose a ball that will bounce unpredictably as dogs would rather play with something that moves that is not predictable.

Your dog may love a stuffed animal. A stuffed animal with a squeak in it or crinkly paper is a great Christmas dog toy.

Have fun shopping for your dog for a dog toy as a surprise Christmas gift to open up with the rest of the family.
