Does the Type of Dog Food You Feed Your Dog Really Matter?
There really is a difference when you buy your dog food. The cheapest dog food most likely has ingredients that are not very healthy. Some dog foods that are middle of the road in price may be okay to feed your dog.
You should feed your dog healthy dog food so he or she can fight off diseases. Your dog will have a chance to live longer, just like a person, if he or she eats healthier dog food. Of course regular exercise is needed as well to keep your dog healthy.
When you purchase dog food with great healthy ingredients, you will happily be surprised that there is less dog stool in your yard. Your dog will not be eating wasteful “filler” cheap ingredients in the dog food. This means less clean-up for you which will save you more time to spend with your beloved dog.
Of course you want to feed your dog the correct kind of dog food. For instance, you should feed your puppy dog food that is made for puppies. There are dog foods’ for older dogs and other specific types of food for dogs. This is very important so your dog gets the correct nutrients he or she needs at each stage in life.
You may ask your dog’s veterinarian for the dog food that is best for your dog. You may also check online for information on different types and brands of dog foods.

Dog Sweaters for Christmas
How many days until Christmas? It really is not that far away--Christmas will be here before you know it. Have you made out your Christmas list and who you have to buy a gift for? Your parents, your spouse or significant other, your children, special friends, possibly co-workers, your newspaper boy, etc. Did you remember to put your beloved dog’s name on your Christmas list?
Your dog would love a dog sweater for those chilly nights. Your dog will snuggle up and sleep like a baby when he is cozy warm. Your dog can wear his dog sweater when he has to go outside when it is raining. The dog sweater can help keep his fur dry and keep him warmer than if he did not have a dog sweater on.
Your dog can wear his dog sweater when it is snowing outside. With the frigid temperatures a dog sweater will be a warm welcome. Your dog loves you unconditionally and a little warmth is a nice way to show your dog how much you care for him.
You have many choices of dog sweaters including colors, styles and sizes. Let your dog open up a special gift from you on Christmas morning.

Dog Dewclaws
Most dogs have dewclaws on the inside of the front legs and sometimes the hind legs. The rear dewclaws usually have more muscle structure and a little more bone than the front dewclaws. Occasionally a dog will have more then one dewclaw on a leg. When there is more then one dewclaw on a leg it is called “double dewclawed.”
Dogs use the dewclaws to grip bones and other things that dogs may hold with their paws. You may come across a dog who’s dewclaws look like they are held together only by a flap of skin. When a dog’s dewclaw is only held by a flap of skin it will not work for gripping.
If you are thinking about having your dogs’ dewclaws removed via surgery, there is debate on whether they should be removed. The argument on one side is that the dewclaws are barely attached to the legs so they may snag on something and accidentally rip away, causing pain to the dog and even infection.
The other side of the argument is that the dewclaws cause extreme pain to the dog when removed. Many countries ban the removal of dewclaws. Some folks are given the exception if their dog is a hunting dog. If you choose to have your dogs’ dewclaws removed, it can be done when the puppy is only a few days old. It is best to have your dog dewclawed as a young puppy. You may have your adult dog dewclawed, if it is not illegal in your country, but there are more complications.
There are dog breeds that require the dog to be dewclawed and some are removed for safety and health reasons.

Losing Your Dog
There comes a time when you lose your dog. Your dog may get loose and run away and never return home. Your dog may have a disease and pass away. Your dog may die due to old age or have to be put down due to pain and suffering.
Losing a dog is very hard as your dog becomes a family member. You loved your dog with all of your heart and now you must let go.
To help you through the grieving process remember that your dog knew how much you loved him. You gave your dog a wonderful home, not all dogs are that lucky. In fact, in cities some 50,000 dogs per year are homeless. Your dog was blessed to have found such a fantastic loving home with you.
Unfortunately dogs do not live as long as most human beings. When you get your puppy or dog, this should be in the back of your mind. Don’t let this stop you from getting a dog as the priceless memories shared are worth it.
Try not to think of mistakes you made with your dog. No one is perfect. It is okay.
Of course you will be sad. Slowly but surely the overwhelming sadness will disappear. You will still be sad but you will know when the time is right to get another lovable dog. Or you may be at the time in your life where you do not want to get another dog--this is okay, too.

Cost of a Dog
Before getting a dog make sure you can afford all of the expenses that come with being a responsible owner. Even if you get a dog for free from a friend, family member or a minimal fee from an animal shelter--there are many more expenses you will acquire.
Keep in mind that your dog may live 10 to 15 years. If you want to save money and still get a dog, you may choose a smaller dog as their expenses are less. The smaller dog will eat less, heartworm pills and medicine from the vet may be cheaper due to the size of your dog.
You will need to buy a doghouse if you plan on keeping your dog outside. You may want to buy your dog a comfortable dog bed for indoors. You will need to get your dog a water dish as well as a food dish. You may want to buy dog food that costs more as it is more healthy for your dog. The better quality of dog food, the less stool your dog will have which means less yard clean-up for you!
Your dog will need a leash, collar, ID tag, toys, brush, crate and dog shampoo.
You should take your dog to the vet for vaccinations and for a clean bill of health. You will need to have your dog see a vet throughout his life. Your dog may become ill which may require medication and/or surgery. You will also need a dog license, possibly a dog groomer and you may want to take your dog to obedience school.
Even with all of the expenses a dog requires, you will never have someone who loves you more than himself! You can find many supplies at your dog one stop shop!

Interesting Dog Facts
*Miacis photo courtesy of Wiki.
Do you know where the dog descended from? Interestingly enough dogs descended from a Miacis. A Miacis is a weasel-like mammal that was around about 40 million years ago.
The dogs we own and see nowadays are most likely a direct descendant from a small grey wolf.
Have you heard of the job dogs had during World War II? Russians put mines strapped onto the dogs backs to complete suicide missions between the tracks of the German tanks.
Man has 5,000,000 smelling cells whereas a Fox Terrier has 147,000,000 and even higher is the “sniffer” dog, Alsation, which has 220,000,000.
You probably know that the average dog lives to be about 15 years old. Guess how old the longest recorded dog lived? If you guessed 29 years and 5 months you are correct! The type of dog is a Queensland “heeler.”
Which two dogs do you think are the tallest? If you said the Irish Wolfhound and Great Dane you would be absolutely correct.
If you have been bit by a dog you know that they have a lot of pressure to bite. An average dog’s mouth can bit with 150 to 200 pounds of pressure per square inch. If you think that is a lot, some dogs can even bite up to 450 pounds of pressure!
What human age do you think a one year old dog is physically as mature as? The answer is 15 years old.
You will need to put papers down until your puppy is 4 months old during the night as your puppy cannot control his/her bladder overnight until that age.
Does your dog turn circles before lying down? Probably- because in the wild this is an instinctive action that turns long grass into a bed.

Keep Your Dog’s Paws Safe This Winter
Once the snow, ice and slush starts to accumulate you know it is time to salt your sidewalk and driveway. The problem is many people forget that rock salt can damage your dog’s paws.
Rock salt is not the same as salt you put onto your food. Rock salt contains chemicals so it works as it does. Think of how rock salt will affect your vehicle. Rock salt can damage the paint, discolor the pain and scratch your vehicle. Your vehicle is tough…now think of your poor dog’s paws.
When your dog’s paws walk on the rock salt it can harm the pad of his feet. If you were to walk on rock salt, how do you think it would feel? Since dog’s have crevices within their feet the rock salt can get stuck and hurt the pad of your dog’s foot. The rock salt chemicals are very bad for your dog’s paws and can do damage. Worse yet, is if your dog licks his paws he will get the rock salt chemicals in his blood stream.
Things you can do to protect your dog when he has to go outside to walk or go to the bathroom is to wipe off your dog’s paws before coming into the house. Wipe off the dog’s mouth if he already tried to lick the rock salt off of his paws.
A great idea is to prevent any rock salt touching your dog’s paws by putting dog boots on his paws before he goes outside. The dog boots will also keep your dog’s paws warm and cozy.

Thinking of Buying an Akita?
The Akita is a Japanese breed that goes back to the 17th century. Back in the day Akita’s hunted for bear, wild boar and deer by holding the animal in its place for the hunter.
In 1972 the Akita was acknowledged in the AKC. The Akita is getting more and more popular. In Japan the Akita is a police dog as well as a guard dog.
The Akita loves his/her family and will protect it with a vengeance. If you are a single person or a single mother with children this is an excellent dog to have as a family pet. With strangers the Akita dog will most likely be reserved. With other dogs the Akita may be quite aggressive.
You will need to exercise your Akita every day. It has to run in a park or large yard and/or taken for a jog on a leash. Your Akita will be very happy if he/she can spend as much time with you. Other upkeep includes brushing the dog at least once per week, sometimes more. The double coat on an Akita has a straight and harsh outer coat with a dense undercoat. This type of dog coat will protect the Akita in frigid temperatures as well as from water.
Your dog should live 10 to 12 years. Important Note: Do not let your Akita eat onions as they have been known to make changes in the red blood cells of this breed.
Enjoy your Akita. The two of you as well as your immediate family will have a wonderful life together.

Stop Puppy Mills
You can help to stop puppy mills. You can stop puppy mills by not giving them any money due to buying a puppy.
Many people want a dog that is a small dog that is mixed. For example, people want a dog that is part Shih Tzu and part poodle. Other popular mixes include Poodle and Bichon. Teacup dogs are popular as well and people know this and want to make money. Medium sized dogs and large dogs are popular for dog breeders as well. Some folks want to make money and do not care at all about the dogs.
Puppy mills will have crates and crates of dogs cramped on top of each other. They will have too many puppies and dogs inside of the crate. Puppy mills sell diseased dogs and you will lose your money due to having to take your puppy/dog to the vet or worse your puppy/dog will die. It is not worth having a puppy you love and get attached to--only to die.
Instead of going to a puppy mill check your local animal shelter. There are loads of mutts as well as expensive pure breeds. If you go to the animal shelter and the dog you want is not there, keep checking back. Some shelters may let you get on a list and they will call you when the desired dog is available. You are sure to find the dog you want.
Stop people from being greedy and making money on puppies. Get your dog from a shelter or a reputable breeder.

Do you have a German Shorthair Pointer?
Since the 19th century the German Shorthair Pointer has been around. This type of dog was bred for hunting.
You will see floppy ears on this type of dog. The muzzle is long, strong and broad. This will help when game that weighs a lot is hunted and caught. The German Shorthair Pointer has strong legs. Brown eyes are common. Some German Shorthair Pointer dogs have yellow eyes which are not wanted by most people.
Perhaps you did not realize that German Shorthair Pointers have webbed feet.
The GSP has a fantastic temperament; intelligent, bold and affectionate is what most of these dogs are.
The dog’s coat is short and flat. There is a dense undercoat that is protected by stiff hairs so that the coat is resistant to water. GSP will stay warm when the weather is cold due to their coat.
If you have a GSP or are thinking of getting this wonderful family pet, make sure you have a lot of space for the dog to run. You must have time to work with this bred of dog. If you do not work hard with this dog and let him/her run you may find yourself with a dog that is hyperactive-like as well as behaviors you do not want. This type of dog may try to escape a lot if he or she is not getting enough exercise. Your dog will be happiest as a family pet as well as a hunting dog.

Save a Dog’s Life: Go to a Pet Shelter
If you are thinking about getting a dog it would be wonderful if you chose a dog from a pet shelter. There are millions of dogs that have to be put down due to overpopulation and no one to take care of these little souls.
Why spend money for an expensive dog that will be your family pet when you can get a much cheaper dog at a pet shelter? The fees you will pay when receiving your dog from a shelter are due to spaying or neutering, vaccinations that may have had to of been done, tests to make sure the dog is in good health, heartworm pills and/or other medications, food and care while living in the pet shelter.
You can go to a Humane Society as well to get a dog as a family pet. Some people think it will be too hard to go to the Human Society to get their dog as they can only choose one. When a person sees those beautiful big eyes looking up at them, they just want to take ALL of the dogs home with them.
Many times you will find a full bred dog of the breed you were looking for. If the breed is not there and you really want a cocker spaniel, you can call the pet shelter and Human Society to see if the particular breed you are looking for has shown up. You may also stop by the Humane Society on your way home from work or grocery shopping and check out which type of dogs are available for adoption.

Dogs and Kids
It is important that young children learn how to care for dogs. A young child should learn to be gentle with a dog. Many times you may go over to your friend or family members home and the three or four year old thinks he or she can get on the dog and ride it. Maybe the young child is being aggressive to the dog and you know it hurts the dog. Parents need to teach their children to be gentle as not only is it hurting the dog, the dog may have enough and out of natural reflex bite the child.
When the dog bites the child--the dog is the one that pays the price. The family will probably get ride of the dog even though he/she was in the family first and the adults did not protect the dog.
If parents teach children to be gentle to the dog from the beginning and do not tolerate any type of roughness, the above situation will not occur.
When kids are a little older they can learn responsibility by having a dog in the family. You can give your kids the chore of feeding the family dog, giving the dog fresh water daily as well as taking the dog out during the day for bathroom breaks.
You may choose to pay your child a small amount of chore money. Your child can learn how to save money. Once the money is saved he/she may purchase fun things he/she wants. Or simply let your child learn how to care for your family dog without any type of payment except education on dogs.
Dogs and kids can get along fantastically! The kids just need to learn how to respect your family pet. Your child(ren), you and your spouse will have many fond memories about your family dog.
The main purpose of Doggie-Corral.com is to provide dog owners with an entire line of dog supplies needed to care for their beloved pets. When the dog bites the child--the dog is the one that pays the price. The family will probably get ride of the dog even though he/she was in the family first and the adults did not protect the dog.
If parents teach children to be gentle to the dog from the beginning and do not tolerate any type of roughness, the above situation will not occur.

Dog Exercise
You and your dog can get out and walk five days a week or everyday of the week. Not only is the exercise good for your dog but it is good for you, too. Keep your blood pressure down, cholesterol down, and heart healthy. Walking has so many benefits!
You and your dog can walk and explore the city. Treat your dog with a treat from one of the pet shops downtown. Switch it up and walk your dog at the park near your home. If you live in the country you can take your dog for a walk in the field or on a hiking trail. If you take a walk on a hiking trail, make sure you bring enough water for both you and your dog. Bring your cell phone just in case you get lost deep in the woods.
By walking your dog you will keep him trim and feeling much better. As your dog ages you do not want him gaining a lot of weight especially if he is destined for arthritis, poor hips or back problems with pain.
Your dog will be grateful that you take him for daily walks. If you lounged around the house all day while your owner was at work--a walk outside is pure bliss. To dogs walking outside is like TV to us only better. Your dog is enjoying all of the smells, sights, sounds, tastes and the feel of the grass under his paws.
While walking your dog make sure you have a sturdy leash for your dog. Keep him safe while you are out walking together.

Throwing a Dog Birthday Party
You love your dog so much you want to throw him a dog birthday party. To throw a dog birthday party you will need to send out invitations. You may want to invite your family and/or those with dogs. You may invite the owner as well as the dog if you would like.
To make invitations buy tan construction paper. Cut the tan construction paper in the shape of a dog bone. Let people know the date of the dog birthday party, time, address, who is invited and that it is actually a dog birthday party. You may want invited guests to RSVP.
If you are celebrating outdoors in the summer you can set up small plastic children’s swimming pools. The dogs can enjoy a cool dip in the swimming pools while the owners have a good time watching them.
You may have doggie treats for your dog and the dog guests. (Make sure you talk to the owner before you feed their dog any food.) It would be fun for the owners of the dogs to have a birthday cake. Make the birthday cake in the shape of your dog or a dog bone. The best birthday cake to make is a marble cake so you please everyone at your dog’s birthday party.
Have balls at the dog birthday party so the dogs can have a fun time. You can buy some dog toys for all of the dogs to play with. You may even want to buy a toy for each of the dog guests as a party favor.
When throwing a dog birthday party the most important thing is that you, your dog and all of your guests, whether furry or not, have a great time!

Dog Birthday Gifts
Some people think it’s silly to celebrate their dog’s birthdays while others want to throw a birthday party. Even if you are somewhere in between you can give your dog a little extra special love on the day he/she was born.
On the day of your dog’s birthday you can give him/her a special birthday gift such as a dog bone or doggy toy. Your dog will get hours upon hours of fun with a new dog toy. Cheer your beloved dog up for the day he/she was born.
If it is cold where you live give your dog a new sweater or dog jacket. Your dog will thank you for keeping him/her nice and cozy. Add a pair of dog boots to protect your dog’s paws. You know all of the salt is not good for the pad’s on your dog’s paws.
If you travel frequently with your dog you can give your dog a car seat to keep him/her safe. In the unfortunate situation that you have an accident, you will be extremely grateful that your dog was protected. It is bad enough when you get into a vehicle accident, you do not want to lose your loving pet.
There are doggy airline carriers as well to protect your little dog. Bring him along with you on your trip. Make sure you call the airlines before you book your flight so you know if your dog is able to sit under the airline seat.
Your dog gives you a lot of love and affection. You want to celebrate that the two of you are human and animal companions.

Halloween: Keep Your Dog Warm
It is almost time for trick-or-treating. Your kids are all dressed up in their Halloween costumes. You take a photo of them before you head out to the adventure of trick-or-treating.
You have on your jacket and hat. In the past years, some of the Halloween trick-or-treating times you even had on your gloves and snow boots due to the frigid weather. When your kids are all bundled up with their costume and you are in a jacket, make sure you do not forget about a very important dog in your family. He or she wants to stay warm and comfy while you all walk from house to house for the Halloween tradition.
You may give your beloved dog a dog jacket. The dog jacket will keep your best friend comfortable instead of chilly. You may even decide to get clever and put on your dog’s jacket with a Halloween hat. Make sure your dog will wear a hat before you go to a lot of work creating a hat for him or her.
The dog jackets come in different sizes. The materials used to make the dog jackets are high quality. Your dog will wear the dog jacket in the winter months, not just for Halloween.
Most of all have fun trick-or-treating this Halloween season, but make sure your family stays warm--including your furry family member.

Stop Animal Cruelty
Unfortunately animal cruelty exists. Animals have no voice and need your help if you know someone is abusing him or her. You can help and make a difference in a living being’s life.
First off, signs of common animal cruelty as well as neglect include:
Overgrown nails or matted fur due to lack of grooming.
You see malnourishment in a dog or animal. You may be able to see the animal’s bones such as the ribs through the animal’s fur.
The basic needs of the animal are not fulfilled which includes lack of water, food, shelter and veterinarian care.
The dog/animal’s home has unsanitary conditions.
Bruises and/or scarring on skin.
Signs of poor health.
To end the suffering of the poor dog or animal please file a compliant. To file an animal abuse complaint please have the address and city of the alleged abuser. Make sure you document the date or dates that the abuse occurred or the date(s) that you finally saw the abuse. Make sure you have a specific explanation of what happened. Keep it brief but make sure you have the facts straight. You will have to give your name and phone number you can be reached at during the day. Anything you say will be kept completely confidential.
You can help end the abuse of an innocent animal by reporting it. The animal may be taken out of the home and/or the abuser may be prosecuted.
You know you love animals and would not want to stand by and let abuse keep happening to an animal. You know because you may even own your own dog or animal. You treat your dog and/or other pet with respect and care.

Dog Playgrounds
Minnesota has a great idea--the Animal Humane Society offers five locations of dog playgroups. There are different playgroups available for your dog depending on the size and age of your dog.
You can join Small Dog Playgroup which is for dogs 20 pounds or less. The small dog playgroup has a mixed age group of dogs.
You may have your dog join Puppy Playgroup if your puppy is under 5 months old.
Featherweight Playgroup is a mixed-age group for dogs under 10 lbs. At times, dogs that are larger and shy may come to this group as well.
With so many folks getting small lapdogs, Micro Playgroup is available to dogs that are a mixed age group and under 7 lbs.
Have fun in Teen Puppy Playgroup if your dog is an adolescent and at the age of 5 to 12 months. Your dog should play well with other dogs. This class gets quite boisterous with the nature of adolescent play, therefore toy breeds do not attend this group. Toy breeds are very welcome at the small dog playgroups.
Looking for something to do on a Friday night? Yappy Hour is a mixed-age, all size group that is open some Friday evenings in the Auditorium at Golden Valley. The group is quite wild so there is an area for small dogs as well as dogs that may need a break.
“Cost: $10 for the general public; $7 for current students. Playgroup passes can be purchased in blocks of 6 for $50 for non-students/$35 for students.”
Your dogs must have his or her vaccinations up-to-date to join the above playgroups.
If you do not live in MN, check your local area to see if it offers one or more of these exciting playgroups for your dog!

Spay and Neuter Your Dog
You should spay and neuter your dog for some very important reasons. The first reason is there are too many homeless animals. It is a fact that in the USA alone there are about 6 to 8 million homeless animals that go to animal shelters each and every year. Thankfully half of these homeless animals will be adopted, but sadly the other half will be euthanized. Most of these animals are healthy with sweet personalities that would have loved to have had a home. These animals could have brought much joy to people but tragically did not have the chance.
In some states in the USA there are 300,000 homeless animals. These homeless animals are not feral or street animals, these homeless animals are those from family pets; a percentage of these animals are purebreds.
When you spay your dog you can prevent cancers such as ovarian, mammary and uterine which is common in female dog’s that are mature. Neutering your dog can help with wandering dogs, mounting and spraying.
You can have your dog spayed or neutered at your veterinarian’s office or at a shelter. Spaying or neutering is the only way to be 100% sure that your dog’s offspring will not end up homeless.
Become a part of the solution to help end animal homelessness and get your dog spayed or neutered.

Dog Seizures
Dog seizures are caused by a neurological condition. There are different types of dog seizures:
Cluster seizures - when more than one seizure happens in 24 hours.
Epilepsy - the dog will have seizures over and over again for his entire life.
Status epilepsy - the dog is having constant seizures or the dog’s brain does not come out of the seizure completely. Brain damage is most likely occurring.
Idiopathic epilepsy - if a dog has this type of seizure there is no brain damage even with multiple seizures.
Symptomatic epilepsy - the veterinarian can see lesions as well as damage to the dog’s brain with radiographic technologies. Symptomatic epilepsy is a primary epilepsy.
If your dog experiences a seizure take him to your vet. The vet can help to determine which form of seizure he is having. Your vet can also determine if the seizure occurred due to low blood sugar levels. (Usually found in toy breeds.) Low calcium levels can occur and cause seizures in dogs. Dogs with liver disease may have seizures as well. Being predisposed to seizures, that is a parent of the dog had seizures, the offspring can have seizures. Once your vet determines the cause of the seizure(s), he/she can treat your dog accordingly and much more effectively.
If treatment is started early your dog can live a normal lifespan. Although if the vet is unable to determine the cause of the seizures, the dog will most likely have seizures that will cause brain damage, thus cutting the lifespan of the dog. It is recommended to get more than one veterinarian’s opinion if the first vet cannot find the cause of your dog’s seizure(s).
