Before getting a dog make sure you can afford all of the expenses that come with being a responsible owner. Even if you get a dog for free from a friend, family member or a minimal fee from an animal shelter--there are many more expenses you will acquire.
Keep in mind that your dog may live 10 to 15 years. If you want to save money and still get a dog, you may choose a smaller dog as their expenses are less. The smaller dog will eat less, heartworm pills and medicine from the vet may be cheaper due to the size of your dog.
You will need to buy a doghouse if you plan on keeping your dog outside. You may want to buy your dog a comfortable dog bed for indoors. You will need to get your dog a water dish as well as a food dish. You may want to buy dog food that costs more as it is more healthy for your dog. The better quality of dog food, the less stool your dog will have which means less yard clean-up for you!
Your dog will need a leash, collar, ID tag, toys, brush, crate and dog shampoo.
You should take your dog to the vet for vaccinations and for a clean bill of health. You will need to have your dog see a vet throughout his life. Your dog may become ill which may require medication and/or surgery. You will also need a dog license, possibly a dog groomer and you may want to take your dog to obedience school.
Even with all of the expenses a dog requires, you will never have someone who loves you more than himself! You can find many supplies at your dog one stop shop!
