Keep Your Dog’s Paws Safe This Winter

Once the snow, ice and slush starts to accumulate you know it is time to salt your sidewalk and driveway. The problem is many people forget that rock salt can damage your dog’s paws.

Rock salt is not the same as salt you put onto your food. Rock salt contains chemicals so it works as it does. Think of how rock salt will affect your vehicle. Rock salt can damage the paint, discolor the pain and scratch your vehicle. Your vehicle is tough…now think of your poor dog’s paws.

When your dog’s paws walk on the rock salt it can harm the pad of his feet. If you were to walk on rock salt, how do you think it would feel? Since dog’s have crevices within their feet the rock salt can get stuck and hurt the pad of your dog’s foot. The rock salt chemicals are very bad for your dog’s paws and can do damage. Worse yet, is if your dog licks his paws he will get the rock salt chemicals in his blood stream.

Things you can do to protect your dog when he has to go outside to walk or go to the bathroom is to wipe off your dog’s paws before coming into the house. Wipe off the dog’s mouth if he already tried to lick the rock salt off of his paws.

A great idea is to prevent any rock salt touching your dog’s paws by putting dog boots on his paws before he goes outside. The dog boots will also keep your dog’s paws warm and cozy.

  1. I'm getting my dog a pair of dog boots in 2 different colors. She'll be happy now when she has to go outside to go to the bathroom and have dry paws. My carpet and tile will be happy too!
