Teacup Poodles

Teacup Poodles are highly intelligent. These dogs are one of the easiest breeds to train. The Teacup Poodle is sweet, lively, cheerful and perky. These dogs truly enjoy being with people.

Make sure you exercise your Teacup Poodle or he/she may become high strung as well as timid. You may have a Toy Poodle in an apartment as your small dog can exercise around the home versus having to go outdoors. Most Teacup Poodles need a daily walk as they have the primal instinct to walk. If your home is large enough you may walk your dog inside, otherwise a nice walk outdoors is recommended. Make sure you walk ahead of your dog or he/she is at the side of you. You want to establish to your dog that you are the leader of the pack.

If you do not establish that you and others in your family are the leader of the pack, your dog may snap if they are teased or surprised by something.

This dog can develop Small Dog Syndrome if it is let to. You must let the Teacup Poodle know that you are the leader of the pack. Otherwise, with Small Dog Syndrome the dog will have horrible actions trying to tell the human/humans what to do. These actions include excessive barking, growling, snapping, guarding and untrustworthy. These dogs will also be sensitive, reserved, nervous and display obsessive barking around strangers. Save yourself the hassle by being a firm yet caring dog owner.

The height is 9 inches or less.
Weight is under 6 pounds.
Average life: 12 to 15 years.

Spend Time with Your Dog

It is important to spend time with your dog. Your dog loves companions. Your dog loves to be pet. Your dog just wants your attention. There are many things you can do to spend time with your dog.

You can go for a walk with your dog each day. Even if you walk for only 20 minutes, you and your dog will benefit from the exercise and time spent together.

You and your dog can take a nap together. If you allow your dog on your furniture the two of you can snuggle on the couch. Watch a TV show or two together and give your dog a pet here and there. Talk to your dog. If you do not allow your dog on the furniture you can set your dog’s bed right by you at the foot of the couch. Your dog is still close to you. You are your dog’s favorite person in the entire world and he or she thrives on your attention.

Training your dog is a great way to spend time together. Make sure your dog knows how to sit and stay before trying to teach him/her any other tricks.

Take your dog to the park once a week to run and play with you. Maybe you live near a dog park. This is a great way to meet other people and your dog can meet other dog friends as well. Dogs run in packs so they do enjoy meeting other dogs although there are some dogs that just do not get along with other dogs. You can try while your dog is on a leash. If your dog still growls and is having a terribly stressful time, at least you tried. Do things alone with your dog instead.

Have fun with your dog. He or she is here for you only for a short time so make the most of it!

Dog Exercise

You and your dog can get out and walk five days a week or everyday of the week. Not only is the exercise good for your dog but it is good for you, too. Keep your blood pressure down, cholesterol down, and heart healthy. Walking has so many benefits!

You and your dog can walk and explore the city. Treat your dog with a treat from one of the pet shops downtown. Switch it up and walk your dog at the park near your home. If you live in the country you can take your dog for a walk in the field or on a hiking trail. If you take a walk on a hiking trail, make sure you bring enough water for both you and your dog. Bring your cell phone just in case you get lost deep in the woods.

By walking your dog you will keep him trim and feeling much better. As your dog ages you do not want him gaining a lot of weight especially if he is destined for arthritis, poor hips or back problems with pain.

Your dog will be grateful that you take him for daily walks. If you lounged around the house all day while your owner was at work--a walk outside is pure bliss. To dogs walking outside is like TV to us only better. Your dog is enjoying all of the smells, sights, sounds, tastes and the feel of the grass under his paws.

While walking your dog make sure you have a sturdy leash for your dog. Keep him safe while you are out walking together.

Caring for Your Older Dog

As much as we hate it, our dogs age just like we do. You can help delay aging by taking good care of your dog.

You should take your dog to the vet at least once per year. Your dog should have their immunizations. These immunizations include: distemper, kennel cough, hepatitis, parvovirus, rabies and leptospirosis.

When your dog is at his or her annual vet checkup, he/she should have a heartworm check and/or heartworm test along with intestinal parasite checkup. External parasites should be checked as well. (Such as fleas or ticks.)

Your dog needs to have good nutrition. You should not feed your dog human food or cheap food. When you feed your dog nutritious food you will have less stool in your yard.

As with humans, dogs need exercise to stay in shape. Exercise is wonderful for your dog’s health regarding being in shape and it will help your dogs overall feeling of well-being. You will have a happier dog when he/she gets exercise.

Clean your dogs teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste from your vet. Try to brush your dog’s teeth at least one time per day. Your dog may need a professional dental cleaning with your vet. Healthy teeth and a healthy mouth means no infection can get into your dog’s bloodstream causing illness in your dog.

Check your dogs ears for mites or gunk. Call your vet for so he/she can give you the proper medication to get rid of the ear mites.

Groom your dog to keep the dog’s skin and coat healthy. When you groom your dog you will find any potential problems in your dog. You will make sure there are no sore spots, dry skin, thin coat or body odor. Besides grooming your dog will help you build a strong bond between you and your dog.

Exercise and Playtime with your Dog

Just like you, your dog doesn’t want to just sit around 24/7. Well, you might, but your dog definitely does not want to. Dogs are active and require stimulation to maintain a healthy disposition. Exercise and playtime give your dog a natural outlet for energy, helps to alleviate boredom, reduces destructive behavior, and help maintains a healthy weight for your dog (dog obesity). The added benefit of exercise and playtime you’re your dog is the human-dog bond.

Just letting your dog run out in the yard does not provide the kind of interactive exercise he needs. Most dogs will not start running around on their own and some dogs require far more than just a daily walk to give them the proper outlet they seek. Play ball or use a rope toy to encourage interactive play. Check out Doggie-Corral for a full line of great dog toys that will give your dog the exercise and playtime it craves with you.
