Veterinary Dental Procedures
Did you know that your veterinarian is also a dentist? Most think that when there are dental issues, groomers’ first come to mind unless it is something major, and then an emergency animal clinic. However, it is not always necessary to run your dog off to an animal hospital for its dental needs. A veterinary learns many dental procedures while in school. Here are just some of those procedures and the reason behind them
Scaling
Removes plaque and calculus build up from the tooth crown, gingival sulcus, and root surfaces.
Polishing
Smoothes out rough enamel making it harder for plaque to build up.
Periodontal probing and charting
Determines and documents the extent of periodontal disease.
X-rays
Evaluates bone damage, tooth loss viability, and endodontic disease.
Fluoride treatment
Strengthen enamel, desensitizes damaged teeth, and provides temporary bacterial resistance.
Sealant application
Prevent plaque and tater build up
Local antibiotic treatment
Applied in gingival pocket for extended administration of antibiotics.
Mucogingival Surgery
Reduces periodontal pocket size; removes damaged tissue, debris, and subgingival plaque.
Root planning
Removes plaque, tartar, and dead tissue from root surface.
Guided Tissue regeneration
Regenerates the periodontium
Extraction
Removes a diseased, damaged, or loose tooth that cannot be saved.
As you can see, a veterinarian performs many of the same procedures even a human dentist does.

Those sound like services my dentist provides. I've had several of these procedures done. I don't recall our pets getting dental services when we were growing up. Someday I hope to buy my own place and be able to have a dog again. I really miss having a dog. My brother called and asked me to look up something on your site. Now, I'll know where to go too when the time comes.
ReplyDeleteMost people don't even think about the care of their dog's teeth. They go to the dentist and see that their kids are seen regularly but they fall short for the dog. Thank goodness I have a vet who treats the whole dog, nose to tail and everything in between. No doggie breath odors for us.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this information. Very helpful. Scheduling teeth cleaning for my dog, Diesel.
ReplyDeleteTime to get pet insurance! I am seriously looking into it on your site so I can afford to have dental work done on my dog. Who knows what other things will come up!
