Seven Year Age Myth for Dogs

I am sure you have heard it – most dog owners have – the saying that for every year of age a dog is it is seven years old in human age. That is not necessarily true. The truth of dog age in comparison to human age is when your puppy is a pup, it actually older than you think both mentally and physically. Dogs develop more rapidly during their younger years. Here is a break down of what age your dog is actually during their energetic puppy days.

6 months old pup = 10 year old human
12 month old pup = 15 year old human
18 month old pup = 20 year old human
2 year old pup = 23 year old human

By the time your puppy reaches about 4 years of age, then the old adage of 7 years per one year age of dog equals out basically meaning that when your dog reached 4 years of age it would then equal out to a 28 year old human. From then on out the 7 year comparison works.

  1. That makes a lot more sense than the 1 to 7 we've always heard. I'll be ready for that the next time I hear someone refer to it.

  2. Interesting. I wonder what the correct aging process is for cats?
