A very rare breed of dog, the Otterhound, will definitely get you as the owner a lot of questions and looks when you are out for your daily walk. The shaggy Otterhound was valued as a capable hunting partner of otters in England for 100’s of years. It is thought that the Otterhound is a combination of the Bloodhound and the French Giffon but its exact origin is still a mystery. It is estimated that there is fewer than 1000 Otterhound’s left worldwide today.
The Otterhound are an easy going and a affectionate companion. Otterhounds tend to get along well with other dogs and even cats if raised with them, however their boisterous nature and large size may not be the best match with toddlers.
Otterhounds stand between 24 and 27 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh in anywhere between 85 to 115 pounds. Their average life span is 10 ½ years to 14 years of age. Their rugged shaggy coat can be any color but is often black and tan grizzle fading to a light blonde or gray when they age. The Otterhound’s double coated hair does not shed much but does require regular weekly brushing. An rather strangely outstanding and unique feature about the Otterhound is their webbed feet which makes them excellent swimmers (thus the otter hunting).
Otterhound are smart and very capable of learning if you approach them with patience. If you have a Otterhound count yourself lucky and one of the rare. If you are looking for a Otterhound you will definitely have to do a diligent search.

What a cutie! I wonder why there are so few of them? I'd love to have one, but I'm afraid apartment living isn't good for a dog. No fenced yard is a problem too. I have a cat right now, but hopefully in a few years I'll be able to buy a home and a dog will be my housewarming gift from me to me.
ReplyDeleteNo, but I'd love to. The fact that there are fewer than a thousand of them world wide doesn't make that a very good possibility. Why hasn't some breeder been on top of that? It's a very good looking dog.
