Setting House Rules for your Dog

There are five basic house rules that should be set in stone if you are a dog owner for your dog.

1. Eliminate outside the house in a designated spot in your yard.

2. No begging for food or food stealing. Also, set the ground rule right off the bat if your dog will be allowed to eat human food as an occasional treat, part of their meal, or not at all.

3. Teach your dog to sit instead of jump on people. Demand that your dog learn to greet people politely. Discourage barking, crotch sniffing, mouthing, pawing, and other unwelcome greeting behaviors.

4. No mouthing of anyone at any time as well as no mouthing of furniture or other human items. Instead, provide plenty of other alternatives and dog acceptable outlets like chew toys.

5. Decide right off the bat if it is going to be acceptable or not for your dog to be able to sleep or lounge on furniture. Have a designated area where your dog is allowed to sleep and hang out.

  1. Those are all great tips. There is nothing worse than a dog with no manners. I said that to a friend of mine and she laughed. She reminded me that they are dogs and not children. I guess you can imagine the type of dog she has. He's a crotch sniffer who thinks he owns every piece of furniture in the house. He's forever putting his paws on the table and counter to see what he can reach. It's disgusting, and she doesn't have a clue.

  2. I want one of each of those puppies in the photo!

Great rules. We need to work on Veda not lounging on the couch. She takes up so much room--there is none left for us!
