Teach your Dog to Lie Down
Teaching your dog to lie down on command isn’t as hard as many would like to think it is. Dogs will do just about anything for their owner for nothing more than wanting to please them. To begin teaching your dog how to lie down, show your sitting dog a treat then slowly lower it, allowing your dog to nibble as you lure it toward the floor.
About halfway there, most dogs will stand rather than lie down, but don’t be discouraged, as I said, this is typical. Start again, but before your dog stands up from the sitting position verbally signal “yes” and give your dog the treat. Lure your dog again with the treat in the same fashion as before but start slightly lower. Each time your dog responds to the height expressed per your direction, reward your dog. Each time, lure your dog closer and closer to the floor and reward only at the lowest point of each attempt.
Soon your dog will realize that it is easier to just lie down then crouch to get the treat. After you have accomplished to lure your dog down to a lying position several times then add the verbal clue to the scenario of stating “Lie Down” before lowering the treat. Move on with out using the treat and only providing an empty hand. You hand motion will become a silent cue as to what you want him/her to do should you not be able to verbalize it.

That was the easiest thing to teach my dog. It's his natural state. I had a lot of time invested in teaching him to sit up! I even took him to the vet to make sure he was ok because he was so, sedate (for lack of a better word). Vet said he was fine, some dogs are just not as playful as others.
