Overweight Hunting Dogs
Even hunting dogs with their athletic nature can become overweight. Seasons, if they fall into a sedentary nature you can bet they will gain a few extra pounds that may make it tough for them to perform when the hunting season arrives again.
Did you know that it is estimated that 40% of dogs are overweight? The most common cause is that their calorie intake supersedes what they burn off in exercise a day. That excessive weight turns into fat over time and can cause medical problems in the future.
Hunting dogs fed a high calorie, protein dense food for athletic dogs are at particular risk for canine obesity, as their exercise level must be kept high in order to “use up” the calories that they are being fed. They must adhere to a strict exercise regimen, in order to prevent excessive weight gain.
Overweight dogs are at risk for a variety of health problems: severe joint, muscle and ligament problems, as well as respiratory and cardiac complications. Diabetes in dogs is also a threat. It is important to remember that just because your dog was bred for an athletic lifestyle, his energy level and fitness depend on you. Keep your dog fit, healthy and not overweight. Dogs can then be assured good health and hopefully a long life.

OMG! Now, that's a fat dog if I've ever seen one. I wonder how them poor little legs can support all that weight? Someone needs to talk to it's owner, and fast!
ReplyDeleteWhat a sad picture. I would say that is animal cruelty. If the dog looks like this--what in the world does the owner look like!!???
ReplyDeleteWow...I didn't know 40% of dogs are overweight. Thankfully I haven't seen a dog this heavy. Poor thing.
