How to tell when your Dog is Ill

Sometimes it can be difficult to tell if your dog is under the weather. We have to rely on how well we know our dog and notice the subtle changes in their behavior and attitudes to tell that there may be a problem.

Here are some signs to watch for in your dog that may require veterinary care.

If your dog has exhibited any of these signs for more than 2 days:

  • Poor Appetite

  • Lethargy

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Lameness

  • Weakness

  • Excessive salivation

  • Frequent and/or inappropriate urination

  • Constipation

  • Excessive scratching or dull, dry, or flaky hair coat

  • Wheezing or frequent panting

  • Nasal discharge or congestion

  • Displays of mild to moderate pain (such as crying when a specific area is touched or action is taken)

If your dog exhibits any of these signs, contact your veterinarian or go to an emergency clinic immediately:

  • Blue, white, or very pale gums

  • Labored breathing

  • Collapse or loss of consciousness

  • Dizziness, imbalance, or circling

  • Inability to walk

  • Extremely bloated abdomen

  • Seizures

  • Signs of acute severe pain (such as crying out very loudly and excessively)

  • Body temperature over 104 or under 99 (normal is typically 100.5-102.5)

This is not a complete list. If your dog exhibits any signs that are out of their norm, call your vet right away. In some situations, your vet may be able to give you direction over the phone or make an appointment. In some situations, the condition may require immediate care. Knowing the signs of your dog when ill can save your dogs life.

  1. I just hate it when my dog gets sick. He gets babied, that is for sure!

  2. Thank u for the info. I know my vet tells us to feed our dog hamburger (browned) and white rice when he has an upset stomach. Works well.
