10 Dog Facts!

1) Keep apple seeds and pear seeds away from your dog as they contain arsenic which can be deadly to your beloved dog.

2) Go Ozzy Osborne! Ozzy saved the family’s dog, a Pomeranian, from a coyote by tackling the coyote and wrestling the coyote until it let go of the dog. Can you see the mental image?

3) Guess how many eyelids a dog has? If you answered three, you are correct.

4) Dr. Roger Mugford invented the wagometer which will share the mood of your dog as it measures the way of the dog’s tail. (The wagometer claims.)

5) If your dog’s puppies are born by cesarean, make sure the vet shows the female dog the puppies before the are cleaned up--or the mother dog may reject the puppies.

6) Sadly the phrase “raining cats and dogs” originated from 17th century England. When heavy rainstorms occurred, many homeless animals would drown and float down the streets--thus looking as if it had rained cats and dogs.

7) Did you know that your dog’s shoulder blades are not attached to the rest of his/her skeleton? This allows for greater flexibility when your dog is running.

8) Is your dog’s name Max, Jake, Maggie or Molly? If so, these are the most popular male and female dog names.

9) Remember the dog on the Cracker Jacks box ? The dog’s name is Bingo. Talk about lucky as the Taco Bell Chihuahua’s name is Gidget and she is a rescued dog.

10) Be careful when you smile at a dog as a dog most likely interprets a smiling person as baring their teeth. Dogs think of baring teeth as an act of aggression.

Choosing a Dog Toy for Christmas

There are different reasons to choose a dog toy for Christmas. For instance, your dog may love a squeaky toy like most dogs because when your dog hears the toy squeak, he or she thinks they have caught an injured animal.

Another dog toy you can buy for your dog at Christmas is a dog Frisbee. Frisbees are superior exercise. The best choice for a Frisbee for your dog is a soft plastic so that your dog’s mouth or teeth are less likely to become injured. Dogs that play Frisbee the best are Labrador retrievers and Border collies.

Do not forget the popular dog ball for Christmas. Make sure that the ball is large enough so your dog will not choke. A good way to test the ball is to see if it will go through a paper towel tube or toilet paper tube. If the ball does not go through either of the tubes, your dog is safe. Choose a ball that will bounce unpredictably as dogs would rather play with something that moves that is not predictable.

Your dog may love a stuffed animal. A stuffed animal with a squeak in it or crinkly paper is a great Christmas dog toy.

Have fun shopping for your dog for a dog toy as a surprise Christmas gift to open up with the rest of the family.

Christmas and Your Dog

When Christmas morning arrives the entire family is excited. Your family and you gather around the Christmas tree after you and your spouse grab a cup of coffee. You have your camera ready. You have your video camera ready to capture each and every moment. Your dog is anxiously awaiting to see what is going to happen, after all everyone is up earlier then normal. (Dogs can tell routines within 15 minutes.)

You and your children start to rip open all of the Christmas presents. Your dog patiently awaits. He/she may start to play in the boxes and with the wrapping paper. You suddenly realize you got your dog a Christmas gift. You had the gift to your dog, he looks at you with his/her big eyes and thanks you.

You could give your dog a big juicy bone, a new collar, a new dog toy or even a new orthopedic dog bed. You are happy you included your dog in this holiday celebration. His happiness is very evident and worth every cent you spent on your beloved dog.

How To Tell If Your Dog is Pregnant

You may have purposely mated your dog or you may suspect your dog is pregnant. Here are the signs that your dog could be having puppies in the near future:

Your dog may have a change of behavior. For instance, if you normally have a very affectionate dog, when she is pregnant she may become crabby and want to be left alone. This works both ways-- a loner dog may become very needy and want a lot of attention from you.

Has your dog changed her eating habits? Maybe she does not want to eat much at all. Have no fear as in a few weeks she will regain her appetite and she will be famished. She will need to eat more food that is high in protein to feed herself and her puppies. As she nears her delivery date, about one month beforehand, make sure you add puppy food to her food so she gets added nutrients for her puppies.

If your female dog is sleeping a lot more, you can have her checked by your vet to see if she is pregnant. Her nipples will get larger as her glands are getting ready to produce milk for the newborn puppies.

You may have noticed your dog is gaining weight. This weight gain is due to the puppies she is going to deliver. Let your dog relax and do not try to move her around a lot. She will still need some exercise each day so take her outside for short walks together.

Your Dog Questions Answered

Doggie-Corral likes to share answers to common questions you may have about owning a dog as well as some not so common questions. As always, if you have a dog question please feel free to ask!

How often should I brush my dog?
You should brush your dog at least 3 x’s per week in the spring. By doing so, you will eliminate much of the dreaded shedding in the winter---practically 100%!

Should I buy a sweater for my dog?
If you have a short haired breed or a small dog it is good to put a dog sweater or dog jacket on your dog when he/she goes outdoors.

My dog should only eat once a day. I like to feed him at dinnertime. Should I give him more food any other time of the day?
You can give your dog a little food in the morning just to get rid of the grumbling tummy noises.

I do not think that my dog will ever bite even when he barks. Other people’s dogs I do not trust. I think that their dogs will bite me if I come close to them, why is that?
You should never EVER assume that your dog will not bite--unless your dog believes this as well.

My dog keeps getting into our garbage in the kitchen. How can I train him not to do this?
Your best bet is to keep your garbage inside of your kitchen cabinets, perhaps under your kitchen sink. This is the only way you will protect your dog and a possible mess.
