You may have purposely mated your dog or you may suspect your dog is pregnant. Here are the signs that your dog could be having puppies in the near future:
Your dog may have a change of behavior. For instance, if you normally have a very affectionate dog, when she is pregnant she may become crabby and want to be left alone. This works both ways-- a loner dog may become very needy and want a lot of attention from you.
Has your dog changed her eating habits? Maybe she does not want to eat much at all. Have no fear as in a few weeks she will regain her appetite and she will be famished. She will need to eat more food that is high in protein to feed herself and her puppies. As she nears her delivery date, about one month beforehand, make sure you add puppy food to her food so she gets added nutrients for her puppies.
If your female dog is sleeping a lot more, you can have her checked by your vet to see if she is pregnant. Her nipples will get larger as her glands are getting ready to produce milk for the newborn puppies.
You may have noticed your dog is gaining weight. This weight gain is due to the puppies she is going to deliver. Let your dog relax and do not try to move her around a lot. She will still need some exercise each day so take her outside for short walks together.

I will be taking our Sheba in --she seems to have some of these signs. She escaped for a day from our house. So we have suspicions!
ReplyDeleteOur Millie surprised us this summer! We had 7 pups. She was a caring mom to them. We didn't know what to expect.
