Do you have an Affenpinscher?

The Affenpinscher is a small wiry haired dog that originated in Europe. Its initial use was as a ratter due to their small size and their quickness. The original Affenpinscher’s stood 10 inches at the shoulder, but through further refinement of breeding created the smaller yet version you see today qualifying them as a Toy Breed.

Affenpinscher name means “monkey” and has been nicked monkey-dog for its adorable monkey like expression. Other characteristics of the Affenpinscher are its undershot jaw, bushy head, beard, bushy eyebrows. It has a spunky bold nature. It often acts bigger and braver than its actual size and will not back down to another strange dog regardless of its size; however, the Affenpinscher generally gets along well with other dogs.

Affenpinscher’s are not the best dog to bring into a home with smaller more rambunctious children but they do well with older well behaved children. They are an ideal house dog and travel companion and do well in apartment life as longs as they get daily walks. The Affenpinscher makes for a great watchdog and are highly devoted and attuned to their owner.

Affenpinschers are highly intelligent which allows them to learn anything with the right motivation however require a lot of attention and can be trying during potty training.

When your Dog Lays on its Back

In dog body language, exposing the underbelly is a gesture of submission or appeasement. However, when a dog feels safe and calm, she may sometimes relax and snooze belly up. Forcing a dog onto its back is scary and threatening, but gently teaching him/her to take that position and relax can improve your dog’s confidence and sense of safety.

Begin by kneeling beside your dog and have him/her lie down. Show your dog a treat then move it slowly toward its hip, letting it lick and nibble on it. When he/she rolls its weight onto the opposite hip, give him/her the treat. From there you can lay it on its side by using a treat to lure its nose toward its ribcage.

Once on its side, feed several treats in succession, each one rolling him/her a little further onto its back. Then help him/her relax on its back by holding a treat for it to nibble on while you slowly stroke its chest. Allow it to lean its weight against you or gently support one of its front legs to help it balance. When it is has done this movement a few times, add verbal cues like, “On your back” saying it as you lure your dog in that direction.

Teaching your dog to lie on its back will help it relax and make grooming easier to handle.

How to Stay Calm Training your Dog

It is easy to lose your cool when training your dog. They don’t always learn as fast as you would like them to. Part of it can be due to how you are training them and part of it can be due to their breed. Some dogs just train faster than others, where other require more patience.

Anxiety is contagious emotion, but fortunately so is calmness. Dogs and puppies gather information from their owner’s body language that can either calm them or increase their anxiety. If you are worried when your pup is anxious, that is likely to increase their reaction and can leas to fearful or aggressive behavior.

Our bodies tighten up when we feel anxious. We clench out teeth and fist. We speak louder and faster and our breathing becomes quick and shallow. Here are some techniques to help you remain calm while training your dog or pup, or at least give the impression of calmness that your dog will mimic.
• Stay conscious of your breathing and keep it slow.
• Loosen up your arms and shoulders. Shift the weight slightly and even slouch a little. This will give the impression of being relaxed and not worried or uptight about the training.
• Keep your speech slow and in a lower pitch. This will reassure your dog that things are OK.
• Yawn occasionally. A yawn will help you relax and will give your dog the impression that you are calm.
Remembering these tips for remaining calm when your dog is anxious can help both of you maintain composure during training.

Dog Smell in Home

Many people think a quick solution to eliminating doggie odors from the air in your home is by purchasing an ozone generator. Don’t bother. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has been saying for almost a century now that no agency of the Federal Government has approved these devises for occupied space. The best way to improve the air in a pet owner’s home is by keeping animal spaces clean and windows open. Regular washing of your dog’s bedding is the most effective way to deal with doggie odors as well as keeping your dog bathed.

Dog Adoption Fees are a bigger Bargain than you think.

It takes no math expert to know that adopting a dog from a rescue shelter is by far cheaper than purchasing a purebred from a breeder. You can easily spend anywhere between $500 to $5000.00 purchasing a purebred dog from a breeder where as the initial cost to adopt a rescue dog runs from $75 to $250.00 on average.

Fees vary on the type of group and its location with other factors affecting the adoption fee being the age, general health, and breed of the dog. The more desirable the dog and younger the age, the higher the fees generally run but will still always be far less than purchasing the same dog from a breeder. Things the adoption fee covers that the cost one would spend purchasing a purebred from a breeder are basic veterinary care including examination and blood tests, vaccinations, treatment of any illnesses, spay or neuter surgery, flea and tick control, testing and treatment for heartworm, and microchip insertion. Some shelters even toss in extras like collar, leash, dog food, crate, and dental care items.

Part of your adoption fees also goes to help cover the cost of the rescue centers operation costs. When adopting a dog from a rescue or shelter you are not only getting a family pet, you are helping to benefit operations that are saving dogs. You are also benefiting from any care and training the dog you adopted received. When you compare all the benefits that come with adoption, it is definitely more valuable than just the money alone.

Smoking around your Canine Friend

More than a quarter of pet owners who smoke would quit if they knew that secondhand smoke endanger their dog according to the April 2009 survey reported in Tobacco Control. The American Animal Hospital Association notes that dogs react to smoke particles much like humans do, developing lung inflammation and breathing problems. It even increases a dogs’ chances of developing cancer too.

Long snouted dogs are at most risk of nasal cancer; presumably, because of the dogs long airway provides more surface area for exposure. Medium and short nosed breeds are more susceptible to lung cancer. Everyone knows it isn’t healthy to smoke in front or around children. Our beloved dogs deserve that same respect. Their lifespan is too short as it is. Why would you want to risk shortening it even that much more? Could you live with the guilt of knowing your secondhand smoke caused your dog irreversible harm?

Dog Arthritis Relief without Drugs

If you have a dog with arthritis, more than likely your vet has recommended dietary supplements containing glucosamine, a natural amino sugar found in healthy cartilage; chondroitin, a complex carbohydrate that helps cartilage retain water; and an anti-inflammatory omega 3 fatty acid.

As more two legged people are looking for more natural remedies for their own ailments, they are looking for the same for their four legged family members. The University of Florida’s School of Veterinary Medicine states that the two approaches have the similar results but the natural way doesn’t appear to have drugs gastrointestinal side effects. They recommend you ask your veterinarian about these natural ingredients and how to incorporate them into your dog’s diet. Some of those natural remedies include ascorbic acid or vitamin C; aloe vera; Yucca; Bromelain enzyme; and perna mussels or green-lipped mussels.

How often do you clean your dog bedding?

Spring and Summer brings puddles, mud, and dirty paws. Dirty muddy paws makes for dirty dog bedding. Not to mention the excessive shedding that many dogs do. Dirty dog bedding makes for dirty dog hair and eventually smelly dogs. No matter if you are giving your dog regular baths, a dirty bed makes for a smelly dog.

You can stop some of the dirt from making its way to your dog's bedding by rubbing your dog down with a towel after walks including its paws. Regular brushing helps with keeping the shedded hair loss down in its bedding as well. But nothing is going to prevent you from having to make sure you do regular washing of your dogs bedding, soft toys, and pillows.

Optimally, you should run a load of washable dog bedding and accessories once a week, much like you do your own laundry. Start by shaking all blankets and bedding outside to remove as much of the loose hair as you can, then wash with hot water and a dye and fragrance free detergent. To eliminate doggie odor, add a half a cup of baking soda to the water. Hang your dog blankets outside to dry if possible to give your dog a fresh outdoorsy smell on their bedding. If you have to throw your dog’s bedding in the dryer, make sure to avoid using fragrance dryer sheets because the scent may irate your dog’s skin.

Dog Breath

Puppy breath is one thing, but when your dog just has straight up poopie dog breath, it can be more than you or your dog can bear. First off, before simply trying to disguise the bad doggie breath, a trip to the vet is in order. Dog breath can be an indicator of other medical problems.

Daily brushing of your dog’s teeth with dog toothpaste is essential in good doggie breath. Daily brushing alone even if doggie toothpaste is not available to you is better than nothing at all and will go a long ways in how your dog’s breath presents. No dog toothbrush or toothpaste – at least rub your dogs teeth down with a washcloth.

Other handy tools include a fingertip brush or dental sponges if your dog is a little more difficult when dealing with its dental hygiene. For natural freshener, give your dog raw carrots to chew on.

Doggie Corral has some great dental products for your dog. Don’t let your dog go around with bad breath or poor dental hygiene. It can lead to other medical issues.

Draw the Dog

The creators of a fairly new website really would love to hear about your dog’s silly antics or nature. Jim George, a former Disney animator, and his friend Bruce Kasanoff launched Draw a Dog which features black and white cartoons (Picture above is from their website) that seemingly draw themselves. The best way I can describe this website ~ Draw the Dog, is by sharing with you what the owners say on their page.

“Welcome to the happiest “Spot” on the Web! We post a new cartoon every day, except for Sunday, when we rest.

Draw the Dog is drawn by Jim George, one of your typical ex-Disney animators who lives near the beach in Venice and once spent years animating in a cabin in the woods and who has been creating characters for film and TV and who has been a director and book author and who also has a counseling practice and who really likes animals and people, too.

Sure, these guys are a dime a dozen, but Jim is also quite sincere and seldom eats more than his fair share of food.

Of course, left to his own devices, Jim would almost certainly run out of good ideas shortly before global warming turns Las Vegas into a waterfront resort, so the whole idea – one might say the beauty and wonder underlying it – of this site is that most cartoons are inspired by real life dogs and their real life antics.

Jim draws the cartoons; Bruce Kasanoff does everything else. This is because Bruce can’t draw and Jim doesn’t want to do anything else.

Make your dog famous. Or maybe infamous.

Since the vast majority of dogs have trouble typing, we depend on folks like you (dog owners, that is) to write us with descriptions of your canine companions and their exploits.
You can do this here. Or here. (Same place – didn’t want you to miss it.)

If Jim is inspired by your story, we will write “inspired by (your dog’s name) in (your town and state) above the resulting cartoon, so be sure to tell us – you guessed it – your dog’s name and where you live. Please don’t get upset if you see a cartoon of a dog digging through the garbage and you think, “Hey! I sent Jim a story about my dog digging through the garbage!” Dogs like that sort of thing.

The details count. Take the story about the two Great Danes who ended up on the roof of a porch, after one of them opened the screen on a second story window… yes, we are definitely talking about you, Dusty and Dixie. We get stories about two Great Danes on the roof, well, occasionally. But it was the plight of the owner trying to tell the fire department what happened that shifted this story into overdrive.

By the way, don’t worry about the humor or artwork; that’s Jim’s job. You just tell us what actually happened, and he’ll do the rest.”

Jim and Bruce

Dog Coat types Determined by Gene Type

The wide range of coat textures in purebred dogs is determined by variant genes. Before a recent study published in the journal Science, scientist knew little about the genes influencing canine coat length growth pattern and texture. Researchers from the National Human Genome Research Institute studied the DNA of 1,000 dogs representing 80 different breeds. They compared the results to descriptions of various coat types. The study found that combinations of various forms (RSP02, FGF5, and KRT71) account for seven major coat types in purebreds. The gene RSP02 results in wiry hair. The gene FGF5 results in silky or long fluffy hair, and the gene KRT71 produces a curly coated dog.

Researchers believe that carefully controlled breeding of purebreds offer advantages in pinpointing genes particular traits. As well, it may help in studying diseases. This could be great news in determine cures for diseases that effect canine and human alike such as cancer!

Do you have a Doberman Pinscher?

Louis Doberman created the breed Doberman Pinscher during the early 1900s in Germany. Louis was a tax collector and wanted a guard dog, one that was loyal and protective without even having to necessarily train it to be that way – more natural instinct. He did a great job creating the breed Doberman Pinscher because they have the ability to protect without aggression or hostility by merely placing themselves between their owner and perceived threat. Their look pretty much takes care of the rest.

The Doberman Pinscher has a very distinct look with its black, red, blue or fawn coloring with rust on its muzzle, throat, chest, legs, and below the tail. Its coat is very short, smooth, and sleek. Do you have a St. Bernard?

The St. Bernard gets its name from the 81,000 foot Great Saint Bernard Pass where travelers have crossed the Swiss Alps into Italy for many centuries. The Saint Bernard dog originated in Switzerland where its original use was a guard dog, companion, and snow rescue dog.

The St. Bernard’s general personality is that of a gentle, dignified, steady, intelligent and protective dog. It makes for a great family pet and is very good with kids and other animals. The average life span of the St. Bernard is 7 to 10 years, not near long enough for such a wonderful dog. They average ion height from 27 ½ inch minimum at the shoulders for males and 25 ½ inch minimum at shoulders for females. Male St. Bernard’s weight range from 140 to 180 pounds and females 120 to 140 pounds.

The St. Bernard comes in all shades of red and deep brown to brownish yellow coats, including brindle with white, plus markings and ideally a dark mask. Its coat is dense and smooth with short to medium-long straight or slightly wavy.

Dealing with the loss of a dog – The Stages of Grief

The loss of a dog, a life long family pet can be just as crippling as the loss of any loved one. The pain is really no different and the grieving process is very similar. There are 4 steps in the grieving process with the loss of a family dog – denial, anger, sadness, and then finally acceptance. The stages can vary in length and often times intermix.

Denial is when you just don’t want to believe it has happened. It is a natural defense mechanism we use to try to protect ourselves from emotional pain. It hits a first time dog owner harder than someone who has own pets in the past. The length of this stage will vary depending on length of dog ownership and how one has dealt with previous loss.

Anger sets in after the denial stage – when reality really starts to set in. Anger can be directed at yourself or at other people such as if your dog was hit by a car – the driver of the car, at a vet for a misdiagnosis, or at a loved one who is not being supportive. Self-directed anger can be for not doing the “right thing” or for what one thinks they should have done or could have done to prevent their pets demise regardless of validity.

Sadness strikes at any stage, from the moment your dog takes ill to its demise, and throughout the grieving process. This stage can linger and/or come in bouts.

Acceptance is the final stage. The owner recognizes the loss and is able to look forward. Memories of the dog are easier and more celebrated rather than bringing on tears.

No two people work through the grieving process the same. It will vary by person and individual situations. None right or wrong. Recognizing the stages can help though in working through them quicker. If you have a friend or a loved one who has lost their family dog, please be patient with them and supportive- it can be just as devastating as losing a two legged family member.

Teach your Dog to “Come” on Command.

“Come” comes in real handy when you own a dog and one of the most important commands you can teach your dog, for its safety and your own sanity. With a few simple steps you can have your dog “coming” on command.

Start with your palm open offering a treat to your dog while saying “come” or “here”. When your dog touches your hand while taking the treat reward him/her verbally by saying “yes” or Good”. Repeat this three times.

.Now, offer your dog your empty open palm saying “come” or “here”. When your dog touches your hand say “yes” or “good” and quickly drop a treat into the target hand (the one it touches) and let her/him eat the treat. Repeat this 5 times.

Now, call “here” or “come” (always use the same command word) from several feet away having your hand out. Reward verbally when he/she touches it. Increase the distance when he/she gets good at following the command. Gradually add more challenges (like when he/she is distracted) until your dog’s response becomes reliable.

Senior Dog Grooming

Senior dogs have a tendency to become a bit more picky on how you go about their grooming needs. Their patience with you can become limited, and with age comes pain, so even some things you did in the past, they can no longer deal with physically. Here are a few tips that will help make grooming your senior dog a little bit easier for both you and your senior canine friend.

If your senior dog natural coat of hair is medium to long, keep it trimmed short to reduce the need for regular brushing. If you do not like a shorter cut on your dog, brush it daily to prevent tangles that can be discomforting. However, if your dogs hair naturally drags on the ground, do trim it so it doesn’t drag.

Groom in parts. One day focus on nails, next brushing and clipping hair where needed, next day work on rear grooming, etc. This takes the stress of a full grooming session off your senior dog that can be very draining on them.

If you previously took your dog top a groomer, switch to using a mobile groomer so your senior dog doesn’t have to deal with long waits at the groomers. If there are no mobile dog grooming units in your area, always schedule your dog’s grooming for the last appointment of the day.

When water baths become discomforting to your senior dog, consider using foam or waterless bath formulas instead.

Dog Loving Parasites ~ Tapeworm

Tapeworms (cestodes) get their name because of their long flat shape. Of the several types of tapeworms, most cause few problems in dogs. The larval stages of tapeworm can however cause serious diseases in humans who become infected by the egg stage of the parasite passed in a dog’s feces but is rare in occurrence. However, a new diet fad of humans is that of ingesting tapeworms to lose weight. Pretty extreme if you ask me.

Tapeworms are worms that live in the small intestine of dogs and other animals. Depending on the type of tapeworm, the tapeworm is generally transmitted by your dog eating fleas or other infected wild game or rodents. The clinical signs of tapeworm are slight if any, generally being weight loss, diarrhea, and vomiting if any. More often than not, owners will find rice like tapeworm segments in their dogs stool, around the anal area, or where the dog lies down. A veterinarian will determine if your dog has tapeworms through a fecal exam.

Flea and heartworm preventives and not allowing your dog to eat carcasses will help prevent the infection of tapeworm.

Dog Loving Parasites ~ Mites

Mites love dogs as much as they love humans. They do not discriminate on leg count. Mites (demodex) live on skin and hair follicles. In normal numbers, mites don’t really cause any problems, however an overload of mites can cause demodectic mange. What happens, for some unknown reason, a dog’s immune system fails to control the mites and with the increased population results in inflammation or mange. This generally occurs in puppies but older dogs are not immune, especially if their immune system is already compromised.

Mites are generally transmitted from the mother nursing to the puppies. Clinical signs of mites out of control is usually patchy and localized hair loss. In more severe cases there will be wide spread hair loss, itching, and secondary bacterial infection. A veterinarian will do a microscopic exam of the dog’s skin scrapes or skin biopsy. There is no real prevention of basic mites.

Other types of mites can cause an intense itching condition called sarcoptic mange (scabies). These types of mites are highly contagious for both dogs and humans. This type of mite burrows into the skin and lays eggs causing the intense itching. Clinical signs of mites other than the basic mites are intense itching, scaly thickening skin, scabs, and hair loss primarily on the elbows, ankles abdomen and chest. Contact with other infected dogs is the most common way these types of mites are transmitted.
