How to select the right orthopedic dog bed for your Dog

Many of the same high quality materials, like memory foam, orthopedic foam, and heating elements found in human equivalents now can be found in orthopedic pet beds.

There are many choices in orthopedic dog beds making it very difficult for you to know which one is the correct choice for your dog. Consider these tips when making your choice.

1. Purchase the correct size of bed for your dog. Dog beds come in various sizes and it is better to have a bigger bed than a smaller one. Your dog should be able to stretch out fully while sleeping on the bed without the fear of him falling off.

2. Do you want your orthopedic dog bed to be heated? Many of the orthopedic dog beds come with the heated option. If you have an older dog with arthritis, a heated bed can give him much comfort. The heat will provide him relief from his painful and stiff joints. If you have a new litter of puppies, a heated bed can provide them with warmth and a sense of security especially while mom is away for a while.

3. Consider the size and shape you want for your dog bed. Consider where the dog bed will be located and which shape and size can be a space saver for you.

4. Make sure you purchase an orthopedic dog bed that has a removable and washable cover. This makes it possible to keep your dog’s bed fresh and clean making it a much healthier environment for your dog.

5. Price is a major consideration. Some of the higher end orthopedic dog beds can cost several hundred dollars, but remember you get what you pay for. If these are too expensive, you can find some great dog beds for fewer than fifty dollars. Remember cheaper dog bed may end up costing you more in the end because due to having to be replaced frequently. A high quality orthopedic dog bed should last for years if properly take care. There are replacement covers available for those beds that have removable covers.

Why Dog Aggression Changes Over Time

You know, when you think about it, man’s best friend isn’t much different than its owner. As we age, certain things become less tolerable to us. Our patience can run thin, especially when it comes to situations we are unfamiliar with. The same goes for man’s best friend. A dog can be a aggressive puppy, trained to be docile, and then turn aggressive with age but on the same token, a dog can be docile from the get go and turn aggressive, or be docile and remain that way throughout its entire life. Part of a dogs temperament has to do with breed, and another part of it has to do with its surrounds, owner, and how it was raised. If you raise a aggressive dog you can count on it being aggressive in old age.

As dogs grow from puppies to adult dogs, so to will their confidence and understanding. They understand where they fit in most canine interactions, and may develop behaviors such as possessiveness once they get used to the fact that they can actually claim toys, food or certain areas as their own.

As a dog gets older, it tires easier so being around a puppy or kids full of energy can be frustrating for them. It is common for a tired dog to growl, snip, or bark in warning to a puppy or others to back off when they are tired.

An older dog may become less confident in its hierarchy due to feeling weaker and less mobile. Medical conditions such as arthritis can compound its frustration and due to the discomfort cause your dog to be less tolerant of what is going on around it. This can cause your dog top lash out to both other animals and people. When it comes to medical issues that are causing your dog pain, aggression issues can appear in even the best-trained dog. Severe aggression results from a dog that has been neglected or abused, or as stated earlier, trained to be aggressive in the first place such as in dogs trained for dogfights. These aggression issues are solely the fault of an abusive owner. If your dog begins to show signs of aggression look at what is new in your dog’s life. Is there any thing medical wrong with your dog? If your dog is aging, did you recently add a new addition to the household either in a new puppy or family member? Look for clues as to what could be bringing on the new aggression. Once you locate the trigger, you can help your dog by correcting the situation or giving extra support when it is a situation that cannot be resolved.

Stop Mature Dog Biting

The older your dog gets the harder it is to change unwanted behaviors such as biting. But the saying “you can’t teach and old dog new tricks” is not necessarily true. You can get your mature dog to stop biting but it will take some work on your part.

A muzzle is a good place to start until you have your dog trained to no longer bite. Keep your dog muzzled at all times it is in contact with strangers or even visitors in your home. It is not worth the risk.

When training your mature dog not to bite, when your dog nips, growls, or actually bites let out a load gut growl and chase your dog away from you while acting like a scary monster or maniac. Your dog will retreat. Make sure you do this as soon as your dog shows any negative biting behaviors.

If your dog is biting out of showing dominance, it can be a bit more difficult to break. It already feels like it is the ruler so basically you have to take the control back. This will require you to demand that your dog follows through with every one of your commands from the simplest such as sitting to commands that are more complex. Feed only after giving a command and your dog following your command. Limit the time the food is available to your dog. This puts you back in charge in the dog’s mind. The hand that feeds the dog controls the dog.

Enforce boundaries with your dog. After time, boundaries can become lax. It is time to take back control. Make separate sleeping quarters for your dog if they are sleeping in your room and especially if they are sleeping in your bed. Make couches and other furniture off limits and stick to it. Your dog will gain more respect for you and your regain control.

Avoid games with your dog were they become overly excited. Many times, mature dogs bite out of excitement. However, those bites can draw blood and cause injury just the same as an intentional bite.

If a dog is biting out of being alpha over territory, take the territory away from them. Dogs can make claims to certain toys, areas, and even pieces of furniture in your home, and when another makes move into that territory, you will know by your dog first beginning to growl, and then biting to guard what it believes is his/hers. Quickest way to end it is to remove access to it.

If your dog is biting out of fear, you have to handle it a bit different. It is natural for a dog to bite when afraid. Do not punish your dog for being afraid. This will only make the matter worse and increase your dog’s fear, which in turn will increase the biting. When you se your dog is uneasy in a situation you need to reassure your dog that it is okay. Try to introduce your dog to the same condition or situation be it being around strangers, crowds, or other dogs, slowly and under controlled scenarios until your dog increases its self confidence and becomes more comfortable in those trigger situations.

Stop Puppy Biting

The best time to train your dog to do or not do anything is when they are a puppy, and when it comes to biting, it is even that much more essential you start early.

Start by having puppy toys available for your pup to play with and never allow games that allow your puppy to bite a person. Wrestling with your puppy, as many do, by putting their sleeve/arm in their mouth to play tug a war only reinforces biting and is the beginning of not only a bad habit, but a dangerous one as well. If your puppy does bite you, even in play, immediately give a high-pitched "Ouch" loud enough to startle the puppy. When puppies play with one another and are hurt, they let out a yelp. They can relate the “ouch” to their yelp and your puppy will quit learn to stop.

Never reprimand your puppy by physical means. Everyone in the family should be consistent with this training. Be careful not to allow the puppy to mouth or bite on your fingers. Some people mistakenly see this as affectionate or cute behavior where in fact it is reinforcing that it is all right to bite people, and can develop into serious dog aggression if untreated.

If your puppy continues to bite use this method to discourage biting. Loosely hold the puppy’s lower jaw between your thumb and forefinger allowing it to take your hand in her mouth. Do not squeeze on the jaw too hard. Light pressure will be enough to let it know what it is doing is wrong. Gently hang on to the jaw so that wherever it goes your hand goes with. It won’t take long for your puppy to get annoyed with this and the next time you next put your hand near your hand and ignores or licks it instead, praise it.

Another option is to use a puppy training aversion substance that tastes bad, such as Bitter Apple. Put the substance on a glove and every time the puppy goes to bite the glove, it will draw back. Just be care not to use this method solely or the puppy may only fear the glove and not the action.

How to Stop a Dog from Barking

Barking is like whining to a dog, a natural part of their make up. But if you can read your dogs barks, you can eliminate unnecessary barking that could be causing you or your neighbors to lose sleep, or worse – a visit from the police for your dog breaking an excessive barking ordinance.

Dogs will bark for various reasons. The dog may bark because of something in the environment provoking the bark such as another animal. He/she may bark as an alarm to warn you of danger. Or your dog may be excessively barking due to nothing more than a bad habit needing correction.

You never want to silence your dog completely. A dogs barking is its way of communicating. However, at the same time it is important to teach them to stop when told. Some negative excessive barking is merely due to boredom, much like whining and chewing. It they are left to their own accord, they have to find ways to entertain themselves. Your dog may only need more one on one time with you to give him/her the outlet it needs to replace the need for barking. Make sure you are talking your dog on regular daily walks, exercising and play time with you. If that does not stop the barking, there are training tools on the market that can help train your dog when it is appropriate to bark, and how to stop when commanded to do so. Regardless of which product you use, make sure when your dog responds appropriately you reward tem accordingly.

How to Stop your Dog From Jumping

A dog jumping on a neighbor, the mail carrier, newspaper boy or a child in the neighborhood can be alarming and even scary. It can be even scarier for the person your dog is jumping on. Thankfully, stopping your dog from jumping is not too difficult.

Dogs jump for three reasons – to show dominance, to greet people, and because they have been rewarded for this behavior in the past. Think back if you have ever called your dog to you, patted your chest for him or her to jump up, and then petted him/her on the head for doing so. That told your dog it was acceptable behavior and one they would get praised.

A dominate jumper is the hardest out of the three reasons a dog jumps to train. Here are five techniques that will help you train your dog not to jump up on you or others.

1. Delay greeting your dog when you arrive home. For dominate jumpers, you have to claim back your dominance. Delay greeting your dog for at least 15 minutes after your arrival. If your dog jumps around trying to get your attention during that time, squirt him/her with water pistol, or shake a can filled with pebbles. This will startle him, and if done on a regular basis, calm him whenever you get home. Follow similarly when company comes. Do not introduce your company to your dog until after 15 minutes or longer after arrival.

2. Meet your dog at eye level. When you do go to greet your dog after the 15 minute delay, stoop down so you are more on your dog’s level. Now if you have a tiny dog, this could be a bit more difficult. Get as low as physically possible without having to sit on the ground and pet your dog. This removes the temptation for your dog to jump up to meet you at your level. Make sure you acknowledge when your dog is not jumping up on you while greeting.

3. Avoid aggressive play. Aggressive activities with your dog only produces an aggressive nature. Things like wrestling and playing tug of war may be fun at the time, but not the type of nature you want your dog to display. This type of activity will lead to encouraging aggressive behaviors such as dominate jumping, biting, and unprompted attacks.

4. Use the "Sit" command. The first thing you should teach your pet is to respond to the command “sit”. If your dog is well trained, he will respond to the Sit command before even thinking to jump. Train your dog to respond to the sit command in everyday situations, such as greeting and going for walks. The better he understands the Sit command, the much less likely he is to jump.

5. Teach your dog the “off” command. It is best if you teach your dog both the off and sit command while they are still pups. These two commands can eliminate jumping from the get go. Plus, if it is not taught early, it will be much harder to teach an mature dog.

Make sure other member sin the household follow the same directives with your dog. Receiving mixed signals will confuse your dog and negative behaviors will continue.

How to Stop Your Dog from Whining

A whining dog is as bad as a whining child is, and actually, more similar then you may think. Both can grind down your very last nerve. Whining is a natural behavior in dogs; a way in which they communicate a need. Puppies whine to their mothers when they are hungry, and mature dogs whine when they figure out they can train you to do their begging. Sound like a kid? It should.

In order to stop the whining, you have to know what the goal is. Dogs may start to whine when they want something to eat (dinner table whining), want to go outside, want to come inside, want to go to their kennel, want out of their kennel, want a toy, and the list can go on. The whining to be let out to take care of business is one most owners can deal with and deem acceptable, but the rest – no.

To stop a dog from whining is similar to stopping your child from unnecessary whining. Ignore the behavior. As soon as you tell either a child or a dog to stop whining, you are playing into their power control and you lose. Redirecting the negative whining can also be helpful. Try giving several commands such as sit, stay, come, etc. to get your dog focused on behavior that is more productive. Reward your dog accordingly.

When the whining is related to whining when your dog wants released, keep the kennel or crate in a room that is distant from you. This will avoid the temptation of responding to the whining either verbally or by giving in. Otherwise, to eliminate whining for when your dog wants in the kennel, keep it open so he/she can come and go as they please.

If the dog only whines in certain situations look closely at the situations to determine what is bothering the dog and change them if possible. Reward the dog for being in the situation without whining. Spend extra time with the dog when it is quiet. This reinforces the good behavior.

If the dog whines for no apparent reason, or starts whining when eating, going to the bathroom or when moving, immediately have a vet check the dog. Whining can be a sign of pain. The most important factor is to avoid giving into the whining behavior. If, at any time, you do respond to the dog when it is whining, the dog simply understands that it has been rewarded for the behavior. Stay firm and respond only when the dog is behaving quietly.

Dogs That Chew Furniture

Dogs will always chew. Some breeds are more predisposed towards chewing than others - especially breeds that have long been trained to use their mouths such as hunting dogs like Retrievers, spaniels and hounds. But basically, especially for teething pups, chewing is a pastime for pleasure, for subduing boredom, and with teething, for soothing. . .

However, this chewing can become a real annoyance when it starts becoming a destructive behavior ruining household furnishings. Depending on your dog’s taste will determine what a more targeted item is. Some dogs go for items that resemble their natural foodstuffs in the wild (for example, leather shoes and belts) whereas others head straight for the drywall and start gnawing. Here is some tips that will help protect your household furnishings when your dog has the urge to chew.

If your dog is bored, he/she will chew. Give your dog diversions such as mental stimulation with a variety of dog safe toys.

If left to his or her own devise for long periods of time, get a dog sitter or walker to break up that time so he/she doesn’t get bored and start to chew. You may want to consider a doggie day care if you work more hours than you are home.

Make sure your dog is getting plenty of exercise. That way when he/she is on their downtime, they are too tired to care about chewing.

Limit your dogs free run of the home when not being supervised. But whatever you do, do not lock him/her up in a crate all day. It is hard for them to move around, they have nothing to do to occupy their time, and it can make for a sad, and even sometimes unsociable dog.

Reprimand your dog when caught chewing while in action. Reprimanding after the act, such as when you come home from work and se the leg of your favorite chair chewed to pieces will do no good. He/she will have no idea what he/she is being reprimanded for, only that they are being yelled at.

Make the items you want your dog to chew, such as his toys, much more desirable than the furniture! Spray toys and chews with a small amount of cooking oil and garlic salt, as dogs love those particular tastes. Spray the oil and sprinkle the salt onto his toys before leaving him alone in the house.

On the same token, make the furniture taste bad. Apply foul-tasting substances (non-toxic, of course) to trouble areas: cayenne pepper or Tabasco sauce will do (but may stain, so only use on appropriate washable surfaces). There are also anti-chew salves, sprays, and creams that are effective at deterring chewing.

Boredom and loneliness are the two main causes of destructive behavior like chewing, digging, and excess barking. Leave a radio or TV on that is tuned to a station with people talking. It makes the dog feel that others are in the home.

Animal Shelters Need your Hand

How often do you see a stray dog or cat along the streets? When was the last time you visited a animal shelter? That is where those strays, when found, call home, sometimes until they are adopted, and others, well are not always that lucky. It can be hard visiting an animal shelter, especially those that euthanize animals if a home is not secured in a certain amount of time. You can feel helpless, but you are not. Even though you may not be able to adopt every animal that enters into the shelters door, you can make a difference.

The best thing you can offer your local animal shelter is your time. You can volunteer to play with the cats or dogs, walk the dogs so they get exercise and time out of their kennel, send out invites for fundraisers, help clean, and help raise awareness. It is a great activity to get your children involved with. It teaches them the importance of proper care of pets and the responsibilities that go with them.

If you do not have enough time to volunteer in person, you can always help spread the needs of your local animal shelter. If you have a website, blog, or are on any social media network, you can encourage people to lend a helping hand either financially or in person through volunteering. If you have a business, you can always help by posting bulletins for public view of your support encouraging others to support as well.

Another effective way of helping helpless dogs and cats if by contacting your local officials to campaign for shelters and animal rights.

If you cannot donate your time, donate items such as old blankets and towels. The shelters are always in need of these items. Even old tennis balls can be useful giving a kenneled dog a chance to get out, run, and play. Check with your local shelter on what items they accept for donations. Some even accept pet food donations. Money is always welcomes.

Another thing your entire family can get involved with that will help your local animal shelter is to organize fundraisers. It can be something as a simple cupcake sale that you do where the proceeds are distributed to the animal shelter. There is nothing better other than providing an abandoned animal a home, and then there is in supporting the home that cares for them until they can have a home of their own.

Have a back pack filled with your dogs favorie toys, blanket and medical records. Make sure your dog's collar has identification so if he or she should stray, you can be located easily and quickly. Take ample breaks to allow your dog to stretch its legs out and to reduce any anieties he or she may have along the way. Soft music being played on the radio can be soothing for your dog.. Allergy issues with your Dog? Allergy-Proof your Home

Did you know that one day you may not have a allergy to something, yet the next day you can develop an allergic reaction to it? It is true. Allergies can creep up on you. When an allergy interferes with a passion in your life, like your dog, this can be heart breaking if you do not know how to lessen the risks of allergy attacks in your home. Here are some tips that will lower allergic reactions such as watery eyes, stuffy nose, and sneeze attacks to your four-legged buddy.

Bathe your dog regularly. If bathing your baby personally is too intense on your allergies, have a professional groomer scheduled to give your dog a thorough bath at least once a month.

Invest in a HEPA vacuum cleaner and use it daily. Dust first all counters or areas where dog hair or dander may lay, and follow up with a thorough vacuuming. Vacuum furniture as well.

Have a safe haven. Keep your dog out of one room of your home, so when you have days where the allergy symptoms are more intense, you have a get away. The bedroom is an ideal room to make off limits that way you can get a peaceful nights sleep.

Pet Friendly Plants

Many people enjoy gardening; having plants and flowers indoor and out is just about as big of a passion for some as having their best friend – their dog by their side. However, the two do not always mix well. Some dogs see your beautiful green plants as a tasty treat. This can be fatal for your dog if the plant is not pet friendly. Here are some pet friendly plant tips that will allow you to enjoy your both your passions for many years to come.

Before planting any plants indoor or outside of your home, research the plants first for their pet toxicity level. Plants that can be dangerous to your dog for example are water hemlock (produced convulsions in your dog if ingested) and azaleas (causes stomach and abdominal pain). There are hundreds of plants that are pet friendly and beautiful such as blue-eyed daisies and Jasmine.

When watering your plants, avoid using fertilizers if the dog is within reach. Your dog may try to get a drink while watering and chemicals in certain fertilizers and pesticides can cause harm to your furry four-legged friend.

You love your flowers and plants, and your neighbors likely love theirs as well. Help keep the neighborhood happy by keeping your dog from wandering off into neighbors’ yards and digging up their plants/flowers. Not only do you not want a disgruntled neighbor knocking on your door, but also you are likely unaware of what types of chemical they may be using on their plants and flowers and your dogs contact with those chemicals could be fatal.

Raising Guide Dogs

Have you ever considered different ways to give back to society? Are you good at training dogs? If you want to help those less fortunate, raising a guide-dog puppy is a great way to give back.

Breeds of dogs that are known for their instinctual compassion, mild temperament, and intelligence are specially trained to help guide the blind. While still a pup, to young yet to be trained for their very important duty, they live with foster families where they are nurtured for 12 to 18 months until he/she is ready to receive formal service training.

In order to be a foster parent to a young pup that is in the Seeing Eye dog program there are a few things you should ask yourself first.

Are you available to make a major time commitment to the puppy?
Once trained to be a Seeing Eye dog, the dog will be a constant companion for its owner. It is an important part of its rearing to be with a companion at all times during waking hours.

Do you already own a dog?
If you already have a dog then you have experience in dealing with doggie behaviors. It can be another advantage with the rearing of a Seeing Eye dog if there is another dog in the home. It will help the puppy learn how to socialize with other dogs.

Do you have children?
Having children can be an added benefit, especially if the Seeing Eye dog will be trained for a child owner. It can also help teach your children responsibilities. However, at the same time it can be difficult for children to deal with the temporary status of the puppy in the home. They have to understand that the rearing of the puppy is only part of the Seeing Eye dogs’ path and that when the dog reaches the trainable age, they will have to say goodbye.

If you are interested in becoming a foster home to a future Seeing Eye dog find a local puppy raising program through the International Guide Dog Federation (ifgdsb.org.uk). After interviewing, be prepared to wait for up to a year to receive a puppy depending on the breed of dog you chose. When it comes your time to receive a puppy, you will be given the opportunity to pick from several to find a good fit.

During the waiting period you may be required to attend training classes or monthly meetings to gain a better understanding of what your responsibilities will entail. Even though attendance isn’t required, it is highly recommended. If you have never been to a dog obedience class, you may also want to attend that as well to educate yourself on how to raise an obedient puppy.

Your puppy will be between 7 to 8 weeks of age when you receive him or her. Initiate socialization immediately. Formal group training sessions are crucial to the proper development of your foster puppy. Frequent outings to public places are also important in the early socialization training that your puppy will need in order to be a great Seeing Eye dog. Not every dog after being fostered will make the cut to become a Seeing Eye dog, so your job is very important to insure it makes it to its very important role. Those dogs that do not make the cut are offered back to the family that fostered tem or to law enforcement organizations. Those not accepted through either situation are then put up for adoption. For those looking to adopt a dog who is sweet natured and bypass the puppy era, these make for great pets.
