Commit to Taking Care of Your Dog

If you are considering getting a dog there are a few things you should commit to. If you are not ready to commit to a dog, please wait until you have time and are able to take proper care of a dog.

If you get a dog you should commit to feeding and grooming your dog regularly.

Next you should commit to taking your dog to the vet when your dog is ill or needs an annual appointment. Keep vaccinations up to date for your dog. Make sure you have dog insurance or set aside extra money in case of an unexpected vet bill.

Give your dog a collar and name tag. Your address should be on the dog tag as well as your vet’s phone number in case your dog is lost. (You may want to get your dog micro chipped so he/she can be brought back to you much easier.)

Give your dog enough exercise. This is a great way for you to get fit, too! Get out and play with your dog as dog’s also need some fun playtime.

Spay or neuter your dog as early as possible. There are too many dogs without loving homes. Prevent more dogs from finding a person or family to care for them.

If you are going on vacation or will be gone for an extended period of time, make sure you have a caring person to look after your dog until you are able to.

Once you get a dog remember you committed to this living thing. Your dog will be a part of your family for his/her entire life.

Your Dog Questions Answered

Do you talk to your dog on the phone via answering machine when you are away or if someone is babysitter and hands the phone to your dog? For fun-how many dog owners do you think “talk” to their dog? Thirty three percent of dog owners admitted they talk to their dogs on the phone or leave a message for them.

My bulldog seems like he does not breathe very well. Is this normal? Yes it is normal--as Bulldogs have very short muzzles. Unfortunately, many Bulldogs spend their lives fighting suffocation. Always keep your vet appointments to help keep your bulldog healthy.

My dog died one month ago. I am still so saddened and depressed. Is this a normal reaction to losing a dog? Absolutely! You can suffer the same amount of grief for your beloved dog as you can after the death of a human being you are close to. If you feel you need help, please talk to your family doctor.

My son kicked a dog that looked like it was going to attack him. My son was facing the dog when he went to kick it to protect himself and was terribly injured by the dog. My son is 6’2” and muscular. This was normally a fairly gentle breed. Can this happen often? No matter what a person should never ever kick a dog when he or she is facing the dog. Some dogs can bite a person ten times before the person can even respond.

Funny Dog Jokes & Dog Ponderisms

They say laughter is the best medicine. Being a dog lover such as yourself, here are some dog jokes and dog thoughts that are sure to bring a smile as well as a laugh or two:

Dear God: Are there mailmen in heaven? If so, will I have to apologize--does this sound like something your dog may be wondering?

When I go outside I promise I will not come inside to the house and immediately drag my butt on the carpeting.

I will remember that the cat is not a squeaky toy--when I play with him and he makes a noise- this is not a good thing.

Another question to God your dog may be asking: When I come to heaven will I get my testicles back? Pretty please?

Your dog probably wonders why you smell flowers but you do not smell other people.
“I will remember that the cat litter box is not a cookie jar. No more kitty ho ho’s.”

How can you tell if you have a stupid dog? He or she chases parked cars!

Do you know why the dog tries to chase his tail? Because he is trying to make both ends meet!

Why didn’t the dog speak to his foot? Because it is not polite to talk back to your paw!

What kind of dog do you think a vampire prefers? A bloodhound!

Do you know why the snowman called his dog “Frost?” Because Frost--bites!

What breed of dog chases anything red? A bulldog!

Ways to Confuse Your Dog

If your dog barks and you grab your dog’s snout to stop the barking, you are only creating more tension.

Your dog goes too far out of his yard. You call your dog to come back home. Your dog lowers his head as he comes back to you. When your dog comes to you, you smack him. You tell him, “You are not allowed over there!” You just told your dog it was bad to come to you.

You are walking your puppy on the sidewalk. Another adult dog comes running over to you and your puppy. Puppy gets excited and jumps up putting his front paws on the other dog as your puppy is growling. You pat your puppy on the side and tell him it is okay to try to calm him down. You just taught your puppy that acting in a dominant manner is a good thing. You are at the beginning stages of raising an aggressive dog.

You are out walking with your dog and your baby in the stroller. You let your dog walk ahead of the baby in the stroller. By doing this, you are showing and telling your dog that she is ahead of the baby in the pack order.

You pick up your small dog. Your dog is wiggling and whining to get free. You let your dog down as he wishes. You just showed your dog that he has power over you and reinforced it.

Ways NOT to Communicate with Your Small Dog

Here is a list of different circumstances you should avoid copying with your dog:

You are out with your small dog. A stranger walks past you and your small dog growls at the stranger. You laugh at your dog thinking he/she is so tough for such a tiny thing. You and the stranger laugh and you say to the stranger, “He/she is all bark and no bite.” You think your dog has “small dog syndrome.” You laugh and hold onto your dog’s snout when you say “stop” in a neutral tone. Your dog sees this reaction as praise--you laughed and used a neutral tone versus a stern tone.

You are out with your dog and your dog is on a leash. A stranger walks by and your small dog is pulling at the leash. You and the stranger laugh at the small “tough” dog. You think your dog will never bite but when your dog does this and you laugh, your dog is seeing this as praise. You are slowly making a dog that will bite.

Perhaps you are sitting at the park. You have a small dog on your lap. A stranger walks by. You pull your dog closer to your chest trying to stop the small dog from barking. You just gave your dog affection for barking.
Kids run by while your dog is on your lap. You pull your dog closer to you as you swat your dog on the snout. You just gave your dog affection and smacks? Confused dog.
