Tumors in Dogs

As promised in the last blog about dog lumps, here is information on different tumors dogs can have:

Mast Cell Tumors:
Mast cell tumors are a common type of cancer. These tumors are graded on a scale of 1 to 4. If your dog has this type of tumor you hope it is a 1 which is very slow growing. Grade 4 is a rapidly growing tumor that may spread to different parts of your dog’s body fast. Your dog may have one of these tumors or multiple. These types of tumors come in different sizes.

Melanoma:
This type of lumps in dogs is just as dangerous and is a malignant tumor found most commonly in older dogs. Melanoma appears as a single nodule that will be very dark in color and usually will ulcerate.

Hematoma:
This type of lumps in dogs is a localized collection of blood that has leaked out of your dog's blood vessels. It is most commonly found with dog ear infections as well as pendulous or long ears. They look like very firm nodules, that are fluid filled, and they can come in several shapes and sizes.

Histiocytoma:
This is a benign tumor and almost always is found on very young dogs. These tumors will appear as a raised nodule and be strawberry red in color. You will find these dog tumors on a dog's legs, their head or their ears.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma:
This type of lumps in dogs is another very common malignant tumor and generally occurs when your dog's skin becomes sun damaged or is chronically irritated. There are 2 types of these lumps which are cauliflower and crusted. Cauliflower-like lesions will become ulcerated and affect your dog's lips and nose. The crusted type will appear on your dog's legs or their body.

Tail Gland Hyperplasia:
You will find this type of lumps in dogs on their tail, as your dog has a sebaceous gland on the top of their tail very near its base. This lump is very common in dog that are not neutered. These lumps in dogs can also be secondary to several diseases. The lump will produce a very oily area around the base of the tail.

When you find any type of lump or cyst on your dog it is imperative that you take him/her to your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Different Types of Lumps in Dogs

If you found a lump on your dog surely you were immediately upset. You are worried your dog may have cancer. There are quite a few different types of dog lumps listed below:

Acral Lick Dermatitis:
Your dog may have licked himself in one area so much that a lesion or lump appears. Your dog may have done this due to boredom or stress. Hair loss is another symptom which will most likely happen on your dog’s legs. The Acral Lick dermatitis is not a tumor. Usually this lesion will drain on its own.

Apocrine Sweat Gland Cyst:
This lump is very common as well as round a very smooth. Liquid is usually filled inside of it. If there is liquid within this cyst it will have a blue tint to it. You will find these cysts on your dog’s head, neck or legs. No harm is done with these cysts. Your vet should test them just to be on the safe side.

Flea Allergy Dermatitis:
Your dog may be extremely sensitive to flea saliva. This will cause small bumps on your dog. The bumps are usually very solid without pus. Your dog may scratch himself relentlessly and may experience hair loss. You may notice the skin becoming crusty and scaly. The bumps could turn into hot spots which usually means a vet visit.

Follicular Cysts:
This is actually the most common cysts in dogs. You may hear it called sebaceous cysts. This looks like a single round nodule that is either directly on the skin, or underneath the skin. You will see a bluish tint and it may contain a yellow and grey type of material that is thick in gooey. You will see this/these cysts found on dog's heads, neck, and their truck area. DO NOT squeeze this cyst!

Granulomas:
An infection may cause this type of lump. The lump(s) will look like solid nodules and vary in size. If a foreign body caused this lump it will begin to drain and may ulcerate. When this happens it can lead to a secondary infection. Very serious.

Tomorrow we will talk about the different types of dog tumors. Any lump you find on your dog should give you a signal to call your dog’s vet to make an appointment. Your vet can treat your dog’s particular diagnosis.

Do You Own a Welsh Springer Spaniel?

If you own a Welsh Springer Spaniel you know that they make wonderful pets for families as well as hunters. The personality traits of a Welsh Springer Spaniel is happy, active, affectionate, loyal, gentle and very loving. On the other hand this dog breed can be impulsive, mischievous, and incredibly stubborn.

This dog breed is not good if you are rarely home. The Welsh Springer Spaniel needs to be with people or it may suffer from separation anxiety. This dog loves to be with people. He or she will follow you everywhere. You will have this dog breed by your side when you sit on the couch, a chair and even the bathroom.

The “Welshie” is a high energy dog. If given the chance this dog could run all day long. Therefore, this dog needs plenty of daily physical and mental exercise. This dog breed loves to walk, run, swim, hike, jog, obedience, tracking, agility and retrieving. Your dog will do well with a fenced in yard, but make sure it is high enough as this dog can climb fences. These dogs are very intelligent. It is wise to take this dog to obedience training at a young age to get the most benefit from it.

Prepare this dog to shed in your home. You may brush this dog every so often. If you brush this dog two to three times per week it will help with the shedding around your home.

What Would Our Lives Be Like without Dogs?

What do you think your life would be like without a dog or two in it? There would be so many things that we would miss. We would not have a dog that happily greets us every time we come home. We would not have a dog to share our deepest secrets with and not share them with anyone. Psychiatrist’s would have plenty of clients!

Some of us would not have our best friend to snuggle with albeit on the couch, floor or in bed. We would not have the comfort of calming down when we pet our dog(s). Many of us would have much higher blood pressure, that is for sure!

Who would some of you walk with to get your daily exercise? Or would you exercise at all?

Playing Frisbee and catch with a ball in the backyard would be no more. If you have young children you could play with them. If you don’t, you are out of luck. Two adults would not go out to the backyard very often to play catch with a ball or Frisbee.

Who would look at us with those almost human-like eyes as if to say, “I’m sorry.” Or “I love you.”

Who would think we were the best thing there is in this world? Who would absolutely love us unconditionally no matter what? You got it--your dog.

There are a lot of things we would miss if there were no dogs. Give your dog a big old hug and let him/her know just how much you appreciate them!

Teacup Poodles

Teacup Poodles are highly intelligent. These dogs are one of the easiest breeds to train. The Teacup Poodle is sweet, lively, cheerful and perky. These dogs truly enjoy being with people.

Make sure you exercise your Teacup Poodle or he/she may become high strung as well as timid. You may have a Toy Poodle in an apartment as your small dog can exercise around the home versus having to go outdoors. Most Teacup Poodles need a daily walk as they have the primal instinct to walk. If your home is large enough you may walk your dog inside, otherwise a nice walk outdoors is recommended. Make sure you walk ahead of your dog or he/she is at the side of you. You want to establish to your dog that you are the leader of the pack.

If you do not establish that you and others in your family are the leader of the pack, your dog may snap if they are teased or surprised by something.

This dog can develop Small Dog Syndrome if it is let to. You must let the Teacup Poodle know that you are the leader of the pack. Otherwise, with Small Dog Syndrome the dog will have horrible actions trying to tell the human/humans what to do. These actions include excessive barking, growling, snapping, guarding and untrustworthy. These dogs will also be sensitive, reserved, nervous and display obsessive barking around strangers. Save yourself the hassle by being a firm yet caring dog owner.

The height is 9 inches or less.
Weight is under 6 pounds.
Average life: 12 to 15 years.

How Did You Choose Your Dog?

When you decided you wanted to have a dog as a companion for yourself and/or your family, what made you choose the dog you currently have?

Did you go to an animal shelter and choose the dog with the biggest personality? The dog that gave you the saddest big brown eyes that was calm and content when you petted him?

Maybe you inherited a stray dog. A dog that just kept hanging around your neighborhood. You felt bad for it and gave him some food and water. You know you should not do this, but how can you help but not feed the dog?

If you do find a stray dog with no tags, you can call your Town Hall or City Hall to find out what you are supposed to do. You will have to answer a few questions such as where you found the dog, if it is calm or so frightened it may bite. It is wise to return the dog as it deserves a chance to find its master. If 2 weeks or so goes by and no call regarding the dog, most places let you have the choice to adopt the dog.

You may have chosen your dog due to the fact that your friend’s dog had puppies. You and your children fell in love with them. You all chose your favorite dog and re-voted to see which dog to take home.

A loved one may have passed away and had no one to take care of the dog when she was gone.

You may have chosen a large dog so you feel protected. It is a known fact that criminals break in much less to houses with dogs.

You may have chosen a small dog because you wanted a dog to cuddle on the couch with. Your small dog will alert you better by barking due to a stranger.

Some folks get a dog to help themselves exercise more. It is almost a guarantee that you will walk your dog which benefit’s the both of you. You will become more healthy, tone up, possibly lose weight and feel better.

Feel free to share your story! No matter what the reason is for choosing your dog, we are sure you both are happy being together.

Fly Your Pet on Vacation with You!

If you are planning on a vacation and want to take your dog or cat, you can. You do not have to put your beloved pet in a kennel. You do not have to try to find someone to baby-sit your pet and hope that they do not back out at the last minute. Talk about stress! Many times when you go on vacation you cannot wait to come home after a day or two just so you can see your dog or cat.

The first step is to plan your trip and stay at a pet friendly hotel room all over the USA. You can book your hotel in the country or countries you are planning on visiting as well.

The second step is to book a private charter jet. You do not want to fly your pet in a possibly unsafe area in a commercial airplane. Fly private charter jet and your pet will be right by you. You and your pet will have peace of mind being right next to each other. You will have to keep your pet on a leash for safety reasons.

When flying a private charter jet you can request items to make yourself and your dog or cat comfortable. Any food, water or other beverages may be requested. Do you want a catered meal? You sure can. You can even ask for certain foods that you desire.

A private charter jet will let you choose the date and time you want to leave for your vacation. You do not have to schedule your plans around the airline. Never again will you have to fly a red eye flight if you do not want to.

Keep your beloved pet with you when you go on vacation. You will be pleased that you did.

Arthritis and Your Dog

Is your dog getting up in his years of age? If so, he may become the victim of dog arthritis. Just as in humans arthritis is painful to your dog. He may walk slower, he may get up from a sitting or lying down position slower as well. It may start to become more and more difficult for your dog to walk up the stairs. If you let your dog up on your bed or other furniture it may be too hard for your dog to come up by you anymore due to the stiffness and pain.

You can order your beloved dog some dog arthritis pain medication. Speak to your vet about what you should do to help your dog. You can also buy your dog an orthopedic dog bed. You will let your dog sleep in comfort. You will have peace of mind knowing you are helping your sweet dog as he ages.

If you do buy your dog an orthopedic bed, make sure you buy the appropriate size dog bed for your dog to get the maximum benefit of the dog bed. If you are not sure what size to buy your dog--simply make sure that the orthopedic dog bed is larger than your dog. He will feel much more comfortable if he has room to stretch.

You may choose a heated orthopedic dog bed. This will help with the joint stiffness and joint pain.

It is wise to choose an orthopedic dog bed that has a cover that comes off for easy washing. You do not want to choose a dog bed that has to have the entire bed washed. For one thing it may not even fit into your washing machine and dryer. Plus, it may fall apart if the entire bed needs to be put in the washing machine.

Choose a high quality orthopedic dog bed so that it will last your dog for many years to come.

Spend Time with Your Dog

It is important to spend time with your dog. Your dog loves companions. Your dog loves to be pet. Your dog just wants your attention. There are many things you can do to spend time with your dog.

You can go for a walk with your dog each day. Even if you walk for only 20 minutes, you and your dog will benefit from the exercise and time spent together.

You and your dog can take a nap together. If you allow your dog on your furniture the two of you can snuggle on the couch. Watch a TV show or two together and give your dog a pet here and there. Talk to your dog. If you do not allow your dog on the furniture you can set your dog’s bed right by you at the foot of the couch. Your dog is still close to you. You are your dog’s favorite person in the entire world and he or she thrives on your attention.

Training your dog is a great way to spend time together. Make sure your dog knows how to sit and stay before trying to teach him/her any other tricks.

Take your dog to the park once a week to run and play with you. Maybe you live near a dog park. This is a great way to meet other people and your dog can meet other dog friends as well. Dogs run in packs so they do enjoy meeting other dogs although there are some dogs that just do not get along with other dogs. You can try while your dog is on a leash. If your dog still growls and is having a terribly stressful time, at least you tried. Do things alone with your dog instead.

Have fun with your dog. He or she is here for you only for a short time so make the most of it!

Getting Your Dog Used to Social Situations

If you want to get your dog used to social situations you may have to work on it. The first thing you want to do is to start socializing your dog when he is as young as possible.

You will need to have close supervision with your dog when meeting new dogs. A dog is similar to a child when it comes to learning how to play and interact with other dogs.

If you notice your dog is being picked on or simply looks unhappy/uncomfortable remove him from the situation. You can always try later or another day. Do not force your dog to play with other dogs. If your dog becomes aggressive, tell your dog “no” in a stern voice. If this does not work, remove your dog in a “time out” and slowly enter him back into the situation.

If your dog is just too excited and jumping all over the place, remove him until he calms down. Re-enter him into the situation of interacting with other dogs.

You will notice that some dogs use growling, barking and wrestling when playing. Keep an eye on your dog to make sure he is okay. Some dogs do fine with this type of play while others do not know what is going on. Your dog may take this as a challenge and think he is in a fight.

You may notice that the dogs start to use crashing and running into each other when playing. Some dogs do not like this and feel threatened. If your dog looks fearful or upset, remove him.

If one dog mounts another dog or one dog holds his/her head above another dog as well as one dog biting the back of another dog’s neck are considered power play. You should correct this behavior immediately.

The key is to slowly introduce your dog to other dogs while keeping a close eye on your dog so you can intervene if need be to keep your dog safe as well as the other dogs.

Socializing Your Dog

Before you begin to socialize your dog make sure that all of his vaccinations are up-to-date. It is very important that he is vaccinated against Rabies, Bordetella and all DHLPP vaccines.

If your dog is used to being around people, you can now introduce him to other dogs. Make sure your dog is on a leash as well as the other dog. If one of the dogs shows aggression, you can quickly pull your dog away from the other dog. The dogs should be able to smell and greet each other slowly.

It is very important for you to get your dog to be around other dogs. If you do not, in your dog’s later years he will most likely have behavior problems since he did not learn social skills.

If you find out your dog just cannot get along with other dogs, you can keep your dog entertained by playing with him. You can also take your dog to doggy daycare to be around a lot of dogs. Let the owner/employees know that your dog has difficult being around other dogs and you are trying to help him. This may or may not work for the fearful or shy dog but at least you tried.

Going to a dog park is another great way your dog can meet and play with other dogs. You will enjoy watching your dog socialize and make new friends. Another bonus is that your dog will be tired as he will get all of his energy out. If your dog is tired he will not become hyper around your house or even become destructive if he is normally hyper or simply needs to get some exercise and let out some steam.

If you can, start dog socializing early. The younger the dog the easier it is for him to learn to play with other dogs. If your dog is older and does not like to socialize with other dogs it may be too late.

Make sure you keep a close eye on your dog especially when starting to play with a new dog. Never force your dog to play with another dog.

Have fun with your dog at parks, doggy daycare, with family members and friends’ dogs.

How Did You Get Your Dog?

Did you buy your dog from a breeder? Did you get your dog from a shelter? We want to hear your dog stories!

One of our favorite dog stories is about Brandy. A young married couple found Brandy hanging around their house. When the young couple came home from work there was the dog! The young couple did not think much about the dog being there as there was a new house being built right next door. They thought that the dog belonged to one of the construction crew.

The following morning there was the dog which was a German Shepherd sitting on their back deck. The young female fed the dog some crackers and gave her some water. She felt bad as she did not know when the last time the dog had eaten. Both of them went to work again. When they came home the young wife asked the young husband if they could keep her. She had no dog tags on. He hemmed and hawed. She told him to look into those “big brown eyes.“

She called the village hall to see where lost dogs are taken. They are taken to the Water Department for two weeks. If no one claims them, then you can adopt them.

The young wife wrote up a description of the dog and she hung it around the small town they live in. She counted down the days to her husband. When a few days went by the wife called the Water Department to see if anyone had claimed the dog. She was happy when the gentleman at the other end said, “No.”

As the time went by, the wife talked to the husband about the dog and he agreed they’d keep it once the two weeks were up. Then it was meant to be.

They named their dog Brandy Alexandra. The dog ended up living for about 8 more years. She was the best dog they ever could have imagined. They shared popcorn together. They shared long walks, took a lot of photos of the dog and the dog had her own bed in their bedroom. They would laugh when she would sigh and snore. She was their protector when all three of their children were born. She died of old age and is sadly missed and talked about often.

Share your dog story. We would love to hear it.

Dog Football Jerseys

Did your football team make the playoffs? Which teams are you hoping play in the Super Bowl? Either way you can get your beloved dog a football jersey. Have fun watching the football game in your favorite sweatshirt or jersey and let your dog join in on the fun!

You and your dog can watch the football games together. You can eat your human snacks while your dog indulges in doggie snacks that are healthy. Your dog can snuggle up to you while you are sitting in your recliner chair. Of course you will startle him when you start to cheer or holler at the TV!

If you are having a football party, your dog will fit right in with his dog football jersey on. He will get extra pats on the head when people see how handsome and sporty he is.

If you and your spouse are rooting for two different teams, you each may want to get a football jersey with your favorite football team on it. Your dog can wear one of your football jerseys and then the other person’s favorite football jersey. Keep peace in your home, especially if you have no children and your dog is like your child.

Get your dog in the spirit along with you and your spouse, significant other and/or kids. Your full grown dog’s football jersey will fit him for life. A great investment for many football seasons to come. May your football team come home with the trophy from the Super Bowl!

Prevent Your Dog from Barking

Does your dog bark too much for your liking? Are your neighbors complaining about your dog? Do you have a new puppy that likes to bark at the slightest noise or movement? There are ways to prevent your dog from barking.

Your dog needs socialization. Your dog will get used to other human beings, other dogs, cats and animals and the many noises there are in the world. If you and your puppy/dog are alone and you keep your puppy or dog in a quiet apartment or house, it will only bark more.

You can take a training class with your puppy or dog, too. You will learn how to prevent barking and so much more. Your dog likes to learn commands and actually thrives on them.

If your dog already barks a lot you can correct this. First you have to note the things that cause your dog to bark. Once you know you can begin training your dog. You must control and show that you are ahead of your dog in the pack for the training to be successful. You will be amazed that you will be able to control your dog’s barking once he starts with certain training methods such as submissive techniques, on command, using treats and/or leash correction.

If your dog barks when someone knocks on the front door as most dogs do to let you know someone is here, but you do not want your dog to bark, you can train him. Have a family member knock on the front door. When your dog starts barking command him to stop. When he stops award him with a treat or by saying “good boy”. Only reward your dog when he follows your command. Once your dog has this down you can move onto more difficult barking situations.

What Causes Your Dog to Bark?

There are many reasons your dog may bark. Different types of communication your dog may present are howling, growing, yelping and of course barking. Each one of these dog sounds have a role in a dog pack. When a dog confronts an unusual situation he/she most likely becomes noisy.

Your dog may bark when a stranger or another animal/animals come into your dog’s territory. If prey or potential prey is near your dog he may start to bark. Strong and loud sounds such as a car alarm will cause your dog to bark. Anything that catches your dog off guard such as a strange noise may cause your dog to bark. Being separated from you, his mother and/or your family may cause your dog to bark. A stressful situation, neuroses and even anxiety can cause your dog to bark. If your dog needs food, affection or attention he may bark. Of course you may have trained your dog to bark when he has to go outside to use the bathroom.

If your puppy yelps this means he is experiencing discomfort. If your dog growls he is trying to intimidate a person or other animal. When your dog growls this is a warning before he may attack. Growling can also mean your dog is fearful or feels he is being threatened. Howling in a dog pack is usually reserved for the leader of the pack. Howling is usually used when your dog is hunting. When your dog ages or has a medical issue he may howl as well. Take your dog to the vet to see if he needs medication.

Many Benefits of Owning a Dog

There are so many benefits to owning a dog. If you are thinking about getting a dog, the list below will convince you to do so.

The first benefit of owning a dog if they give unconditional love, trust and affection. We could be the most difficult person to get along with and our dog will love us no matter what.

You can tell your deepest secrets to your dog and he or she will never tell a soul. Sometimes we need to tell someone and just getting it off of our chest helps.

Dogs take years off of your age because you will need to take him/her outside for a walk. You can also be silly and have fun with your dog which is relaxing and helps to de-stress you. Stress is a big killer of people causing heart attacks and strokes--owning a dog can help prevent either of the two.

You will make friends much more easily when you have a dog. People will comment on your dog and start to speak to you. When you are out on a walk and another person has a dog, the other person may strike up a conversation with you or vice versa.

If you have only one child a dog is a wonderful friend. The lonely child or only child will have a buddy to enjoy his/her imagination with. The dog can become a confidant, a playmate, a loyal companion, a magic animal with amazing powers, a counselor, etc. You will boost your child’s self-confidence when he or she has a dog to share his/her fun and memories with.

If you do get a dog please make sure you hold up your end of the deal in the relationship. Take excellent care of your dog and you will both enjoy each other’s company for a long time.

Commit to Taking Care of Your Dog

If you are considering getting a dog there are a few things you should commit to. If you are not ready to commit to a dog, please wait until you have time and are able to take proper care of a dog.

If you get a dog you should commit to feeding and grooming your dog regularly.

Next you should commit to taking your dog to the vet when your dog is ill or needs an annual appointment. Keep vaccinations up to date for your dog. Make sure you have dog insurance or set aside extra money in case of an unexpected vet bill.

Give your dog a collar and name tag. Your address should be on the dog tag as well as your vet’s phone number in case your dog is lost. (You may want to get your dog micro chipped so he/she can be brought back to you much easier.)

Give your dog enough exercise. This is a great way for you to get fit, too! Get out and play with your dog as dog’s also need some fun playtime.

Spay or neuter your dog as early as possible. There are too many dogs without loving homes. Prevent more dogs from finding a person or family to care for them.

If you are going on vacation or will be gone for an extended period of time, make sure you have a caring person to look after your dog until you are able to.

Once you get a dog remember you committed to this living thing. Your dog will be a part of your family for his/her entire life.

Your Dog Questions Answered

Do you talk to your dog on the phone via answering machine when you are away or if someone is babysitter and hands the phone to your dog? For fun-how many dog owners do you think “talk” to their dog? Thirty three percent of dog owners admitted they talk to their dogs on the phone or leave a message for them.

My bulldog seems like he does not breathe very well. Is this normal? Yes it is normal--as Bulldogs have very short muzzles. Unfortunately, many Bulldogs spend their lives fighting suffocation. Always keep your vet appointments to help keep your bulldog healthy.

My dog died one month ago. I am still so saddened and depressed. Is this a normal reaction to losing a dog? Absolutely! You can suffer the same amount of grief for your beloved dog as you can after the death of a human being you are close to. If you feel you need help, please talk to your family doctor.

My son kicked a dog that looked like it was going to attack him. My son was facing the dog when he went to kick it to protect himself and was terribly injured by the dog. My son is 6’2” and muscular. This was normally a fairly gentle breed. Can this happen often? No matter what a person should never ever kick a dog when he or she is facing the dog. Some dogs can bite a person ten times before the person can even respond.
